small scale composting (indoors?)

I just moved into a new place and am hoping to start a garden patch outside
in my yard come spring.
I want to start composting now, and eliminate my landfill waste between composting and recycling.

I have read some material about different compost methods for renters and apartment dwellers, but am wondering if anyone has any advice/ suggestions
before I start. I was thinking about just getting a big metal trash can and putting it outside, but it gets cold here, and I know heat needs to be generated for decompostion.

also, the composting with worms indoors sounds pretty cool!

I've done indoor composting with worms and I have only one comment. Make sure the lid is on TIGHT after you add your scraps! You only make that mistake once! It was otherwise a workable solution for me at the time.
