Can it be DONE? Is there a point? Can they grow delicious little tails~? I started thinking about this the other day(Sadly right when the stores here stopped selling watermelon), I must know! :D

i know this is an old post but my friend brought me a watermelon from georgia and it is sooo good. can i save the seeds and plant them next year? do i need to dry them out a certain way?
billy yes you can just save those seeds and plant them. Just rinse them off and dry them on a plate or paper towels or piece of waxed paper, whatever you prefer. If you want to test them for germination to make sure they're viable seeds, about a week and a half before you want to plant them put some between wet paper towels and keep them moist. If they grow a tail they are viable seeds and will grow you a plant.
If it's a hybrid, the watermelon you get may be close but not exactly the same as the one you planted it from. Also watermelons cross readily with others in the same family for about a 1/4 mile, so it could have crossed with something else too that was planted nearby when it was growing, and the seeds could reflect that cross. If you want to be sure you get exactly the same type of watermelon as your friend gave you, you'll have to ask what type it is and get those seeds from a seed supplier. But you'll at least get a watermelon from those seeds, and probably one at least similar.
I learned a tip from my friend who has an amazing garden - when growing watermelon, choose one that has a short # of days to maturity. They vary from about 70 days to well over 100 days, most people have the best luck with the quicker ones. They need lots of nutrients in the soil.
*does the happy dance*
thanks! i'm gonna save them and give them a try next spring :p
Can i put them in a germinator and grow them into little sprouts like red clover?
I've been wondering about watermelon seeds and almost started a thread yesterday!
I too wondered if you could eat the sprouted greens.
I'm trying it today. nothing so far lol
