Vacuum Sealing? Plastic?
Anyone here do this? How does it work for ya?
Also what are the opinions of plastic storage here? Like tupperware etc? it's all made out of forms of plastic which I heard isn't good for ya? So whats the word? I have a rival seal a meal, yet becuz of the plastic info I have yet to use it? I read that, If its liquid and stored in plastic it's bad... Then i read that even if its dry the plastic lets off gases. So many conflicting views..

I've been wondering the same thing about plastic. I know it's bad but not sure exactly why. So...any advice out there?

I did a quick google search and came up with umpteen results. The basics are that long term storage, esp. acidic foods and heating food in plastic (not an issue here) can lead to the breakdown of the polymer and leach into your food. I have been of the school that glass is best for long-term storage. I was looking into a vacuum seal system that works with mason jars. Does yours work in that capacity as well?
Hope this helps

hmm
Yes the one I have does have an attachment that can be used for mason jars. It also comes with jars made outta plastic that is specially made for them. But the thing Is mason jars are so small, it seems pointless. Unless it would work on a half a gallon mason jar I saw.
But what I want to know is, The plastic that you use to seal foods, ( I saw them do it to cut up salad pieces - which is y I purchased) It would last so much longer. Then I heard about plastic problems and leaching, only if its liquidy, or HOT, then I heard it still lets of gases, but then I thought, Well what about DRY FOOD? Salad isnt wet, Nuts, Dried fruit. So... I still haven't gotten the answers, Some people say plastic is bad period, I saw, Okay but what about storing things that are dry in plastic? Ya know. It's a runaround, Someone who seals anything, how do you feel about the plastic propelyne sheets that seal the food? Do you fear it seeping into your foods? Etc?
Have big jars all over the fridge taking up tons of room, Seems hard!

I use plastic for some things. I have a lot of canning jars because I canned pears and applesauce when we first moved in here. Mainly I use those simply because I have them. I recently purchased one piece lids for them. :) Much easier to use than the ring and top thingie. I'd seen them online but didn't want to pay the postage to have them shipped and the place where I saw them didn't sell any other things I might need.
I use plastic bags. I use those a lot! If I'm going out, I will put some cut up veggies or nuts in a bag so I will have a snack. I can then just throw the bag away and not have to worry about carrying a container around with me.
I really hate Tupperware/Rubbermaid type containers not because I necessarily think they are bag for you but because they take up so much room! And then there are always the ones with the lids that just don't quite work right. Either they get stuck on and you wind up fighting them to get them off, eventually winding up spilling the contents all over yourself. Or the lid doesn't quite seal tightly like it should.
I used to have tons of them. Many years ago I went through a series of roommates who all seemed to leave their containers with me. At one point I got rid of them all. I was soooo happy to have them gone because I really never used them anyway. If I have leftovers, I usually just leave them in whatever dish they're in or plate they're on and just cover them with plastic wrap, foil, waxed paper, whatever I have around at the time. Makes more sense to me than transferring the stuff to a lidded container then back to a plate or bowl for serving.
But then when I was in the hospital recovering from having my baby, I was horrified to discover that my dad and husband had gone out shopping and bought me tons of containers in all sizes. They were so proud of themselves. I remember being all hormonal and sleep deprived after having just given birth and just stood there stopping up and down weeping, "Why? Why? Why? After I just got rid of them all, why did you buy me more?" I got rid of those too.
I have since bought a few specific sized containers with a certain purpose in mind. My daughter now takes her lunch to school every day. I have some small containers for her lunch. For instance, I have some with a little round depression in the center for dip. It has its own little lid. There is an area around it to hold whatever food will be dipped in the dip. I have some designed specifically for salad with a little thingie on the top to hold the dressing. You push on the top and it shoots the dressing down into the salad. Not needed after all it seems because it turns out she hates salad dressing. But they are still good sized containers for salad.
I have little round and square containers, some insulated, some not. These are good for things like sandwiches, grapes, apple slices, fruit salad and other foods that might get squished or be too difficult to eat out of a bag. And lastly, I have two really large containers that I bought for flour mix. Because of her food allergies, I have to make a mix of rice and other flours. At the time, I thought I would need two different flour mixes for two different purposes but I discovered that I really needed only the one container.
I do have some other containers. For some reason people keep buying them for me. I have a set of three that I won playing Bingo. No matter how hard to try to get rid of the ones I don't want, they keep coming back to me in some form or another. So I finally resigned myself to keeping one in every size. Since I have done that, by some miracle no new ones have come in with the exception of the few specific ones I bought. I have used the others on occasion. Like for taking treats to school or some such thing. But really I only use them once or twice a year at best and could easily make do without them.
