I'm having a really hard time opening my baby thai coconut. In the past I've used Alissa's method (demonstrated in the DVD) but this time when I tried that I ended up breaking my knife!!!! Grrr.. I'm so frustrated! Anyone have any tips???

I posted this thread a year ago, it's got a few video tutorials on opening coconuts (both young and mature). I use the method where you shave down the top first with a knife, then you chop.

Good luck. Once you get the hang of it it's easy.
Misty*Mountain,
Prior to today, the one and only time I attempted to open a young Thai coconut I ended up breaking my knife and still didn't get the coconut open!!! My solution: I went and bought a cleaver from Bed Bath & Beyond ($19.99 + tax) and got up my courage today to try again...This time I succeeded with ease. The only difference is that I did peel off the outer skin and then proceeded to open it. (See the pics and video at http://www.rawguru.com/html/openyoungcoconut.html).
Good luck!

Buy a cleaver or you can buy a small machete from ecopolitan (www.ecopolitan.com). Contact them at 612-87-GREEN. They use machete's to open their baby coconuts.
First chop a tic-tac-toe on the top of the coconut with the tip being inside the center square. You should not have to peel the coconut. Pry the top off with a spoon. Pour out the juice and scoop out the meat with a spoon, or chop the coconut in half with the knife and scoop. Make sure that while you are chopping the coconut to keep your hands off of the coconut at all times to save your fingers.

I break mine on a rock like a monkey.
Amberly..are you able to save the liquid?
A cleaver is good, but I use a much lighter butcher knife with good results. I mention this bc not everyone wants/needs to spend the $$ on a decent cleaver.
My method is similar to Amberly. First I find the soft spot on the bottom of the coconut....poke thru that spot with a butter knife....drain out the water....than take it out side and slam it on the driveway.
That should be a signature line, I love it
'I can't get my coconut open!!!'
Once upon a time my husband received a sawzall that was never used. It's really nice and works perfect. I place my coconut in a vice and **ta-da** just quickly shave the top of it off. I tried everyother stinkin way to get the tops off without loosing most of the liquid and a few fingers and was not successful. This saw and vice is a lifesaver (finger-saver) for me!
