Soup and Salad

Alright.. now on to the good stuff. Today was awesome because, well #1 I've started my first blog and already got some comments but also because I had a success as well as a spectacular failure today.

So since I have gone 100% here, my main source of food throughout the day was to just make a big ole raw soup. Since I am pretty new to this whole thing I haven't really mastered the recipe's. All I know is I'm putting some good stuff in there, add some salt, heat it a little, and you're good to go.

Now I know that I should really eat everything right as I prepare it, but I did hear on some interview (I forgot whom) saying that because raw smoothies retain all the fiber, for some reason they don't oxidize as fast and can be kept for a while. So I've been applying this logic to my soups. So far so good, that is until I got home today. I opened up my thermos and the lid seemed a little jammed, so I really gave it a twist. And BAMM!! a of puree of: brocolli, celery, squash, baby boc choy and soaked sunflower seeds exploded all over me. and there I was standing in disbelief with a thermos in my hand that was smoking like some sort of cannon.

So yea... rather then try to make too much sense of the whole ordeal, I think I'm just going to take this a sign and make sure to eat my soups within the first few hours, even if they are in an airtight thermos. Although, I do have striking suspicion that it may have something to do with the sunflower seeds since today was the first time I used those instead of an avocado like I usually do. In any case my consensus is that keeping raw vegetables warm in a sealed container = fermentation.

I'll have to figure out something else to bring with my when I am away from home for longer periods of time and but need to stay warm.

Ok, on to the success of the day. I went out and bought some young coconuts and nutiva hemp seeds. Made a very simple salad with:

heart of romaine,
some hemp seeds,
pumpkin seed oil,
and young coconut flesh.

something inside me was telling me I should hold of on the lemon/lime on this one. Well, let me tell you wow, reallllly satisfying. When I finished eating I knew that this was just what I had needed.

In case you didn't know

I really had a bit of a moment the first time I did this.

Thanks for the coconut opening link... and I'm sorry about your spill. I hope you don't mind that it gave me a little laugh. I was laughing with you, though, I promise. :)

I would bet that it was the sunflower seeds...did you soak them before you make them into soup? They release gasses when soaked, and if you didn't soak them, those gasses are most likely what caused your soup to explode! Glad there wasn't any major damage!
