Georgina's Raw Journey

Packaging/labeling again - this time Chia

Rate this Entry
So I had the pineapple with instructions on how to open it now I have a rather amusing message on the Chia seeds I bought.

First-off I should mention that I walked a four mile round trip, with the dog in tow, just to buy these seeds. There was a brisk wind and by the time I got back I felt the tiredness of hiker in the peak district. But anyhow.

The message reads thus:-

Disclaimer: Under European Regulations, Chia seeds have been classified as "Novel Food", allowing the seed to be included in bread.

We are not selling this product as human food but we can absolutely guarantee a very, very healthy parrot
I did buy the seeds in the health food shop and I suppose the disclaimer is much along the lines of the hemp labeling that says not suitable for sprouting.

Heehee! That is pretty funny! I even find it funny that Europe has a "Novel Food" classification.. I am going to inspect our next bag of chia seeds to see how they are classified in the US!

I think"novel" probably covers poppy seeds also ... not sure about hemp. We are allowed to eat hemp seed. But not grow it. Even if it is not the right sort for smoking
