Degrees of Raw

Rate this Entry
I am often surprised at how people calculate their % raw.

I like to think of myself as 100% raw but in reality, once I add in the small amount of cider vinegar, nama shoyou, dried spices that I have either daily or occasionally, I suppose I am about 95% raw.

If I have cashews, which I do occasionally then I suppose this level drops a bit but I'm ok with that on an occasional basis.

How do others actually arrive at a definition of high raw when they eat overtly cooked and non-vegan foods?

I am the same as you. I consider myself to be 100%, but in reality I am probably 95%. I think there is a lot of confusion out there about which foods are actually raw (just because the package says raw doesn't necessarily mean it is). I also sometimes use very small amounts of products that I know are not raw, but they add enough dimension to my food, and are in such small quantities that I don't worry about it (things like vinegars and hot sauces).

    Are Cashews not considered "raw"??

Tamai, heat is used to get most nuts out of their shells and cashews especially so.

Speltrong, I use a few non-raw things and one which I have started using is balsamic vinegar but I really feel this is a bad idea. I should use an organic apple cider vinegar really. Balsamic is heated oftentimes to make it sweeter.

Frontier makes raw spices, heated below 118 degrees. Also, I make many of my own spices, grow and dehydrate myself. I consider myself a 100% raw foodist if everything I use is raw except vinegar and nuts. Of coarse, I purposely purchase nuts that generally say raw on them. Alissa considers herself 100% raw and eats nuts. There are a few purists out there, but I haven't met many.
