My Wonderfully Raw Journey

Obsessed with being an ideal raw foodist!!!

Rate this Entry
So i've been enjoying my raw journey so far but i've noticed that this new lifestyle has so much information that has thrown me all around the world it seems. I'm a perfectionist(well sort of) and i like to do things as right as can be. The thing with raw foods is that it seems to be such a "new" concept that no one really knows what's right. I do understand the bits and pieces of information about why we should or shouldn't eat a certain food and why we should avoid certain foods for certain reasons. But i feel all this mixed info has done nothing but make me fearful and crazy. I almost feel like i'm getting some sort of obsession of eating an ideal raw diet and i'm glad i have the ability to be aware of this so i can stop this madness!

I've been running away from nuts and fats for the past few days and i think it's quite silly. I even convinced myself that eating a high fruit diet was best when deep down i think it's dumb and creates more health problems than needed. I forgot how much i love veggies and all the creative ways raw foodist use them to make pastas, soups, salads, and even breads! Don't get me wrong i love a good dessert and i feel that's where fruit shines but my simple banana froyo or larabar works fine on a daily basis and having a green smoothie supplies me with plenty of fruits for my day. Also snacking on some fruit when i'm hungry is ok too but dominating my life with it seems a little over kill.

So what food groups does that leave left? Veggies, Fats, Oils, and Grains. Now i LOVED my raw oatmeal as it left me soo full (5 hours could've been 6 but i convinced myself to eat) and full of energy which had it been cooked i know would've done the complete opposite. When it comes to nuts and oils I try to use them sparingly but honestly those are the only foods we eat that have the most calories in them next to grains. Now i'm not saying i'm only gonna start eating loads of nuts for calories but i'm definitely going to stop freaking out if a sauce for my veggie dish has nuts in it or depriving myself of lovely avocados/guacamole on my salads or when i make "tacos" and allow myself to enjoy my nut cheezes. I think once i start making breads this will also help supply a sufficient source of healthy calories and nutrients as i cut back on my fruits and nut consumption and keep me full cause lets face it my big salads will only keep me full for about 2 hours and i need something to make me feel more grounded.

I'm sick of this light headed spacey feelings and the blood sugar head aches from the fruits. I'M SICK OF BEING AFRAID AND OBSESSED!!!! It's worse than when i ate cooked food i knew exactly what to eat without fear and no problems so i need to get that same level of peace of mind and consistency. I LOVE raw foods and although 100% is ideal it's an idealism i can't fully keep up with but i will try my best.

I just try not to think about food too much. When I am hungry I eat and as long as its raw I don't care what it is I am eating or when it is I am eating.

The benefits of eating simply are many fold but not least of all ... I don't have to decide 48 hours in advance that I am going to eat a certain meal that must spend days in the dehydrator!

I do sprout things but not to excess. If I don't have sprouted stuff some days then it isn't a big deal.

I ate gourmet raw on Saturday but really missed my big green salad so I ate leftover gourmet raw on Sunday and loaded up on greens.

The reason I am 100% raw is not in order to reach perfection but in order that I can eat anything I want within that definition. Then I don't have to think about what I am eating. If it's raw and I like it then I can eat it :) and I can eat it at 2 in the morning or 11am or 10:15pm because my parameters are not so strict as a lot of people think.

The one thing I don't let monkey-mind let me eat is cooked, non-vegan foods. He can have anything else he wants.

You'll find that equilibrium Dani, just try not to look for it so hard that you fail to spot it!

It is right that raw food is really very helpful to keep away all the diseases, but can anyone tell the diet that what quantity should be consumed?

Dani I can totally relate to this! It does get overwhelming sometimes, I know it sounds weird but I don't think I've ever thought about what I eat this much before. But I'm hoping it's all to do with transitioning and getting your footing. Even though I've been raw for a while now I still feel like I'm learning, especially as I'm still experimenting with all the different foods etc.

I was also really wary about fats (nuts and oils mainly) because I went raw right after being on a somewhat restricted diet as I was trying to lose weight, and I was just used to not having very many fats anymore, but I realized that was stupid because the kind of fats that make you put on weight are the ones found in cooked and processed foods (not to say that we should all go crazy with avos and down a cup of olive oil every day haha), but healthy raw fats are so vital in a raw food diet, here's a good quote from Alissa's website that I love:

Raw fats such as avocados, olives, coconuts, nuts and seeds are imperative in a healthy diet. These fats contain antioxidants. They contain oils that help the joints, nerves and bones.
These raw plant fats do not cause the body to gain excess weight because they still contain the enzyme lipase; this is the enzyme that is needed to digest fat. Cooking fats destroy lipase; along with other important enzymes and minerals. The fat digesting enzyme, lipase, breaks up the raw plant foods as they are eaten and help to digest the oils in these foods. Because this food is getting assimilated and digested properly, it is not clogging up the blood and arteries, causing all kinds of chronic and degenerative diseases. It is not getting stored as excess weight in the body. You will not get fat by eating avocados, sprouted nuts and seeds and other plant fats. When starting this diet, many people eat 2-3 avocados a day and lose weight. Even people without a lot of weight to lose, will find that the few extra pounds they have will just melt off because they are eating fats in their whole natural form with all of their enzymes intact.
But anyways, point is try not to freak out/obsess too much. Just eat what you feel like, when you feel like it, and try to have a good balance of everything. Remember that even on your worst days raw, you're still eating live and nutritiously dense foods that most people barely get enough of every day. I also think once the 30 day challenge is over it'll be easier for you to adjust and find your balance.

Thanks ladies for your comments and supports! Nad thanks so much for the quote!! I was even reading one of Ani's books where she stated why nuts and seeds are so important. I think it's just too much he said she said going on and too many extremist trying to pull you one way or the other. I love raw foods cause i love the versatility i love being able to make dishes since i loved being able to cook and bake when i wasn't raw and now there's a whole new window of opportunity and i'm limiting myself from something i find fun out of fear. I'm just going to keep trucking along eating whatever i feel like eating within reason of course. I shouldn't have to think this hard about what i eat since i never had to before.

I think you can moderate your own blog too Dani so that spam should be deletable by you. Not quite sure how it works though.

On a more relevant note, I think raw food does attract extremists ... just as veganism does. Some people just like to be extreme! I like to feel good and raw makes me feel like it's worth getting up in the morning but maybe sad food is more comforting. I hope to reach a stage where I don't need comforting and thus I don't need cooked, non-vegan foods.

maybe if I had been brought up raw and cooked food was found to be healthier I'd feel the opposite!

I agree with these posting but there should be a proper consumption of raw food else it leads to bad effect on body.
