My Wonderfully Raw Journey

Starting a raw food/ healthy eating club at school this fall!

Rate this Entry
So i've decided that what better way to spread the word about raw foods and eating healthy in general than to start a club at my college. I think this would fun and a great way to get more people to try raw foods and just have better eating habits in general. The focus of the club isn't raw foods but just eating healthy over all and knowing where your foods come from. I want to show movies like fat, sick, and nearly dead, Food Inc., The future of food, Food matters and more eye opening documentaries about food.

I feel a lot of college kids get into this crazy lifestyle of party, sex, and drinking til they die and eat late night fast food and all this craziness and by the time they graduate, get settled, start a family they're over weight and have many health problems and start reminiscing about the good ole days and wonder what went wrong. When they try and gain control they fail because they don't know what to do or how to do it the correct way.

I feel my club will help give people the information on how to eat right and hopefully get them to start now so they can avoid this ever so common endeavor. Every year we hold a club fair and for the club fair i want my booth to have raw vegan quick bite snacks and my brownie bites to share so that people can see that raw foods can be tasty and will want to learn more on how to eat healthier quickly and easily while in school even if that means picking better options in the cafeteria.

I also want to hand out some sort of quick info on the different eating lifestyles like raw vegan, vegan, vegetarian, and healthy normal eating and show that there's good in all. I'm not trying to bash anyone's eating habits only show them the better way. During meetings i figured we'd discuss each lifestlye in more depth. Talk about carbs, about proteins, and maybe even do a few nights where we just learn to make a new recipe that they can do in the dorms. Promote green smoothies as a morning picker upper alternative and things of that nature.

My thoughts are all over the place with this project as i feel there's so much to say. I also want to have a few speakers come in and talk about nutrition and the benefits of eating a higher plant based diet. I have a friend who is going to help me get somewhat organized with all of these ideas and i'm hoping the club will be a success and can live on even after i leave the school.

If anyone is actually reading this please leave any suggestions or links that have easy informational brochures i can print out to hand out at my table. I still need a nice name that will not turn anyone off because it seems to be only focused on veganism or raw foods. I was thinking Rawkin Out! since there's no real indication to what it is exactly but maybe a little bit? Any quick hor' dourves recipes would be awesome too!! Thank you!

Dani - I swear it's like we have the same mind, I was thinking of doing this too! At universities in the UK we have societies not clubs but they're pretty much the same thing. We also have a fresher's fair where people can come and find out more about all the different ones they want to join etc. I feel like we should collaborate on this! But anyways, it's a GREAT idea. I know I for one would have loved to discover raw foods/healthy eating way earlier (preferably before I developed such foul eating habits my first year at uni lol), and it'd be so nice to find some like minded people or even just help educate people a little on raw foods and eating well.

Having raw bites/healthy snacks at your booth is bound to drive traffic and draw interest - college kids never turn down free food! For a hand-out, I'm not sure if I'd go with having info about ALL those lifestyles/diets as it may be overwhelming to read all at once. Maybe have a few different ones? Or like a 10 easy tips to improve your health type of hand out where the tips can be things like "have one green smoothie/juice a day" "replace one drink a day with water" "have one vegan/vegetarian entree a week" etc.
I'll have a look for any brochures etc. seeing as I'd like to use them too and I'll pm you with anything I find. Also for the name I'd avoid anything alluding to Raw or Veganism, just because I'm positive that will turn people off. What about "Eat Laugh Live", or "Live Well"? Or maybe like "(Insert name of college here) Wellness Club/Society"? These are just off the top of my head, but whatever you choose I think it should be more focused towards health and well being rather than any one lifestyle/diet.

As for food ideas - definitely make some raw brownies/cake bites or oatmeal cookies etc. Some green smoothie samplers, a creamy smoothie made with a nutmlik, raw and/or vegan hummus with crudites and raw crackers, raw cheezes, guacamole, raw nori rolls, KALE CHIPS

Ahh thank you soo much! It's nice to bounce ideas of of somebody cause i felt like i was rambling off whatever came to mind! I agree about listing the different lifestyles cause i tried to imagine how that would fit so i knew i needed something different and your 10 tips are awesome idea! I will definitely use it!! The name of course i know needed a change but kids here really wouldn't catch the "raw" in the title lol they are pretty clueless. I really don't want to use "raw" so i love your suggestions especially "Eat Laugh Live"! It's perfect. I definitely was planning on doing mini bites of raw breads/crackers with cheeze & veggies on top and even make a pate like salmon or tuna or even a raw veggie burger w/o dehydrating. I'm worried about green smoothie samples because i don't want to create lots of plastic waste for the little cups but i might be able to reuse them if i get a decent quality. I also want to do another dessert on the side something fruit inspired like blueberry muffins or lemon pudding mini cupcakes. I don't want to make too much food because my school is really small only about 1300 of us in total so the amount of kids that go to the fair is only about 100 or so and that not even all at once its just as they pass by for class and what not so i figured keep it simple and cost effective lol.

I'm gonna start looking for brochures ideas this weekend also and will message you if i find something awesome!
