My Changing View of Food Part 1

Rate this Entry
Yeah! Another couple of pounds down. Now if I can just get back to exercising to help that along a little bit.

Well, I started to write this blog 2 days age and realized that I have too too much to say about my changing view of food so I am just going to write about it when I have time and post what I have got.

When you have been trying to lose weight off and on for 21 years you become a little bit food obsessed. Fortunately or unfortunately, the article Jen posted makes perfect sense to me. I can totally relate to the feeling that you have almost no choice but to eat a food that isn't good for you. It's the brain chemistry! Makes you feel a little less guilty but, like a drug addict you still must make the tough choices. Why are the touch choices the ones that are best for you?

I have always been a label reader. Jen and I got that from our mom, who was into nutrition before it was popular to do so. But, when faced with a vast array of foods that are made up of chemicals, preservatives, food colorings and high fructose corn syrup it seems almost impossible to steer clear of them. I don't have to read many labels right now. Just on items that can be raw or not, such as nuts. I don't have to check the ingredients on my apples or kale. It just is what it is. I do still have to read labels on food for Samuel as we have found that food coloring affects his behavior a bit. I was recently looking to buy some ice cream for a get together and the brand on sale, Edy's, had a strawberry that looked like it was nice and natural. I decided to read the label anyway and was shocked to find they added red and blue food coloring to it. Is it really going to make a difference in people buying it if it is a little more pink!!!!! I had to spend the extra 1.67 to purchase the Breyers strawberry ice cream.

I have always been a little bit annoyed that companies add stuff to food that is horrible for you because they think it will increase sales. I hope people realize this an stop buying food from those companies or at least stop buying the foods that have all the chemicals in them. I sometimes find myself really angry about it now. Companies will poison people for profit! I guess if they were clueless about it then it wouldn't make me mad but, there is no real excuse anymore. Some companies are making changes, like reducing salt over the next however many years so there is less sodium in our diets, so that is good. But, I don't know if they are doing it out of the goodness of their heart or to avoid some federal regulation and make their companies look better.

Well, I have gotta go get some stuff done. I may be able to write more about this topic tonight.
