A Little of This; A Little of That

Food Awareness Suggestion

Rate this Entry
Quite often I find myself throwing away produce because I forget I have it. When I purchase it, I have every intention of making smoozies with it or juicing it or SOMEthing. By the time I get it home and put it away, I often forget my intention or something else takes my attention and I never get to it.

Also as many of us have partners who tend to eat less healthy than we do OR, just keep food in the house we tend to crave, here's a quick suggestion to cover both scenarios ~

Take sticky notes and, on any food (package) or shelf of foods containing something you prefer NOT to eat, write something on it like ~ "Do You Really Want to Eat This? Options" (depending on what you have available):

Bananas
Apples
Grapes
Green salad w/
Tomatoes
cukes
marinated veggies
carrots
beets (shredded)
Olives
Orange juice (maybe you're really thirsty and not necessarily hungry)

You might also want to add on the note ~

"You've just eaten! Are you REALLY HUNGRY?

Also, remember my program "Fit or Fat?" Ask yourself before you reach for "comfort" food out of habits or cravings.

That may give you a chance to contemplate what it is that may be eating you which turns you towards stuffing yourself with food.

Please, comment here and let me know what's working for you!

Injoy!

I reall like this idea - I am such a visual person after a while I imagine even seeing the color of the note will deter me ;)

Knowing it's there keeps me out of the cupboard.

I have 3 heads of romaine & 3 bags of cranberries in my fridge that were bought with "intentions".....I have to use them! I'm trying to be aware of my thoughts & why I want - what I want, when I want - then waiting a bit, maybe having a cup of water, or tea - to see if I really "needed" it. Thanks for posting~monk~

Are you saying BEFORE you purchase you are being aware of what you want when you want? If so, yup! That's what I'm doing as well. Less waste of good food!

My thing is having to balance out what I purchase so I don't get into HIS stuff because I'm hungry (craving or out of habit) and to make sure I have food that supplies what I want in the moment such as "crunch" ~ I seem to forget I ALWAYS have carrots!!!

    Thanks for reading. :)

I try to have a plan for my purchases, but sometimes I think I am superwoman & purchase too much, because I think I am going to do all this stuff with it....those weeks are funny, because I end up usually eating simply - go figure....

HAH! You're not alone there! I've done the exact same thing ~ OR, we go out to eat a lot that week.

I definitely have this problem! I will even buy stuff I know I don't like with the intention of trying it in a recipe, and then it sits. I also have the lazy-factor which is a huge mountain I am constantly climbing...
    :)

I understand where you're coming from... except for buying stuff you don't like. ummm, what's up with that?

Oh, well, I did it with mushrooms because I kept hearing how great they were. I tried, I really tried to like them but I couldn't. I even got some oyster mushrooms with the intention of adding lemon juice and salt (had them at a retreat once and they were SO good) BUT, I must have left them in the fridge too long or SOMEthing because they came up withing 30 minutes of going down. I'll NEVER do that again! Yuck!

Yeah, lazy is not good. I've done Ustream shows on procrastination.. may have to do one on lazy, eh? :)

I guess it's just because I am such a picky eater. I keep telling myself that I can get used to things I don't like... two big ones:

peppers - just don't like the pepper flavor, or the burning sensation

melons - whatever that flavor is that tells you that you're eating a melon (even if your eyes were closed) - just, yuck.

I'm also like that with alcohol, but that's a GOOD thing, lol!

I've always been picky. I revel in being choosy (my choice of words). Are you talking green peppers? I wont touch them. Red, orange and yellow are sooo sweet and delicious! Green = unripe to me.

Now, melons I can live on. Mushrooms = dirt to me. lol

I'm with you on the alcohol though. :)

Don't like any of the bell peppers. Honestly I haven't tried too many others because I don't like the burning...

Another bad one: I can't handle the texture of citrus fruits. I could suck 50 oranges dry, but to eat one? Uh... no.

This is all part of the reason it's taken me so long to decide I'm going to try raw. When I first encountered the idea years ago, my "choosiness" ( and my nut allergy made me think it would never work.

But I finally figured it would be worth the effort to make it work for me... and I know it will work!

The first thing that made me realize I could do it? Dates! Wow! How is it that I never knew about dates until a few months ago?!

Wow! Well, I know others who've done it with being picky ~ there are so many choices out there... if you can just find what you like ~ and a variety...

Yup! Dates! And so many kinds of them! How about coconuts? Can you do those? I understand (don't know from experience) that folks could live on them they have so many nutrients. And greens!!! :)
