finally learning to listen to my body

Rate this Entry
yesterday was my first day of smoothie feasting. I made three smoothies for the day, but I ended up only drinking one & a half. I guess I just wasn't all that hungry. This was amazing for me because in the past I've typically eaten whatever food I have on hand without really thinking about whether or not I'm hungry. Yesterday, I actually listened to my body! I've heard other people talk about doing that, but I never really understood it and didn't know how to do it myself.

I started out in the morning drinking a bunch of water and then around 10 a.m. I had my first smoothie. Around 11 a.m. I started wanting another smoothie, but I looked at the time and realized it hadn't been very long since I finished the other one. I knew I couldn't be hungry already so I started asking myself why else I might be wanting the food. I realized it was just because I was bored at work and wanted a distraction from the project I was working on. Instead of eating unnecessarily, I decided to take a break and go run a couple errands. I went to the library to return a book and then stopped by the store to get some new hair ties. When I came back to work, I was refreshed and was able to focus on my project.

Around 2 p.m. I decided to have my other smoothie. This one was all veggies and it tasted more like a soup, so I poured half of it into a bowl and ate it with a spoon. After I finished the bowl, I felt satisfied so I put the other half back into the fridge.

After work I went to yoga for an hour and then I got a pedicure. That was my reward for finishing my 4 day juice feast. It felt so fantastic to pamper myself!!! So much better than "treating" myself with crappy food. When I got home I thought about having another smoothie. There was one in the fridge already made, so it was readily available, but I didn't feel hungry. I thought maybe I "should" have one because I had only had 1 1/2 earlier so I "should" be hungry. But who cares? Why do we get so preoccupied with what we "should" do? Who decides what "should" is anyway? I made up my mind to listen to my body and not have any.

This morning I feel great! I slept really well - it makes such a difference when I don't eat late at night. Yoga felt really good this morning - Wednesdays are my favorite because I love the teacher. All of the teachers at the studio are great, but this one is my favorite. Now I'm at work and I'm having my first smoothie: spinach, chard, strawberry & raspberry. For lunch I'll have the other half of my "soup" from yesterday. If I'm hungry later I'll have the other smoothie I didn't drink yesterday which is spinach, chard, pineapple & cherry.

I'm really starting to want to chew food again. I'm not giving in though! Today is day 2 of 4, so after today I will be half way through. I can do this! All the same food I want today will still be there on Saturday. There is no reason I can't wait for it.

Good for you for taking yourself seriously enough to listen to you instead of the clock or some other voice that says you 'should' do this or that. Intellectually, I know that some days I find I am just not that hungry and some days ravenous, but I am not always as good about listening as you were yesterday. I hope I can improve on that.

Hey, could you give me the recipe of the veggie smoothie that you said was like soup? I am always on the look out for soup type recipes. Thx.

You are doing so well with your 12 day commitment program. Only one more day of smoothie feasting left now...? Are you making plans for breaking the fast or will you trust your body to continue making good decisions when the smoothie feast is over? I bet you do. You must be feeling very clean and light. :)

    Thanks everyone!
The veggie smoothie was: about 12 oz of water, a handful of spinach, a handful of basil, 1 heirloom tomato, 1 small zucchini, 4 crimini mushrooms, 1/2 clove garlic, 1/2 shallot. I just blended it like a smoothie, but after tasting it decided it was actually a soup. It made a mason jar full, which became two big bowls of soup.

Most of the veggie soups/smoothies I found recipes for all had avocado. I'm trying not to eat them this week because they are a trigger food for me. I thought the zucchini & mushrooms would add a little creaminess, and it did. nothing like avo would, but still yummy!

Knitster, I'm doing a total of 21 days commitment. I have today & tomorrow (Thurs & Fri) left for smoothies. Then the next 4 days I will have a juice or smoothie in the morning, and a simple salad or mono meal in the afternoon. I'm trying to just eat two or three times a day rather than constantly snacking. The next 4 days after that I will have any combo of juice/smoothie/salad that I want - will just be staying simple/not gourmet. That will take me to my final day 21...not sure what that is going to be...maybe a day of juicing or mono meals. I dunno.
