Farmer's Market Challenge - Day 1

Rate this Entry
This is what I came up with:

1) I will buy my produce from the Wednesday, Friday and/or Sunday farmer's markets.

2) I will not buy produce from a 'store' even if I run out.

3) I have made these exceptions: There are some items I feel I need to stay healthy (physically/emotionally), that I will never find at the farmer's markets like bananas and some seasonal special fruits like mangoes and ginger.

The point of this challenge is so that I can support the small farmers of my area, who I am happy to say, ROCK in the abundance of produce they bring! I will be able to get a wide variety of greens and fruits each week from them.

In 30 days I will only know what is available at the farmer's markets this time of the year, so I am hoping I will go longer period of time. I will only to go to them and not into stores for produce, unless I want or need something they won't have or for a special occasion, being mindful of the point of this challenge by defining 'special occasion' in the spirit of the challenge. I see this as a way to support local growers and live simpler by appreciating what is in front of me.

The Wednesday market opens at 3:00. I'll let you know what I find!

Update: Organic Iceberg Lettuce yay! that is such a treat! I love to do 'wedgies' -lol

I bought romaine, radishes, avocado, cucumber, plums, cherries, honeydew, garlic, carrots, tomatoes, celery, oranges, almonds

A good day!

That is great. I don't know if you will find this true in Long Beach, but at the Farmer's Markets in Washington items change throughout the season as they grow. Nothing better than eating freshly picked fruits and veggies. Have fun with it!

    Hey Knitster!

Yeah, that's the point. I feel like I am so removed from what grows here, because I go to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's for my produce. I want to understand my own region now.

So, I take it that this is a 30 day challenge? That is so kewl. I can't wait to hear more of what you experience.

I can't always make it down to the Farmer's Market but, the I get locally grown produce and fruit at Sprout's Natural Market. They carry mostly Organic and Local. I know the lady that owns it and her son and other family members work there. :)
