Looking for Advice on Treatment of Cold Sores

Rate this Entry
I'm looking for a way to stop or reduce outbreaks and speed up the healing time of cold sores. I have been cursed with cold sores since puberty. Four or more every year. I used zovirax for many years but it eventually lost effectiveness. Abreva only made the sores pop up in a different spot.

I did a banana search and found a lot of old threads about cold sores. Between RFT and Natural News I came up with a lot of information. It seems that there are many things that cause the herpes virus to come out as a cold sore, including stress, diet, and detox. DETOX??? Is that why I'm getting more of them since going raw? The stomach pains I was having the day before probably were a clue something was not right.

Yesterday I felt the tickle of one coming on. I kept "Really Raw Honey" plastered on it all day. The honey is unfiltered with the pollen and propolis still in it. (Not very attractive, but I was at home.) I also ate several spoonfuls. Today the cold sore is barely there. Only one little blister popped up. I've tried this method before only it was after the blister was full blown and it did not help the healing process. I'm keeping honey on it again today and hoping it doesn't get bigger.

Here is what the research I did today came up with:

A drop of tea tree oil on the blister. Would that be before or after the blister erupts?

A piece of ginger root held to the area to stop inflammation. Again, is that before the blister erupts?

Avoid cacao and other foods high in L-arginine

Take L-lysine or eat foods high in it. Mesquite is the only raw food I could find high in lysine. (Do not take lysine long term as it compromises the immune system...hmmm, and lysine is found mostly in animal products)

Eat foods high in Omega fatty acids

Avoid all nuts and seeds except hemp and flax

Eat organic

Licorice root tea

Lemon balm cream Suggestions on how to make my own?

Echinacea

Reishi (mushroom)

Thyme

Cayenne

I'm still not clear on what to put on it to speed healing after the blister has appeared. All the many years of personal research on this has only taught me what not to put on it. Hydregon Peroxide on the blister helps with pain but doesn't seem to make a difference in healing time.

Anything you know about these remedies or any other suggestions you have would be very much appreciated.

I want to say tea tree oil can be used after it blisters, because it is used on cuts and scrapes. I use it in place of neosporin type products. That's all I know of the above.

However, how wonderful to have a condition that requires one to eat copious amounts of honey and to 'wear' it, too!!

Look up some stuff on coconut oil. It had natural anti-fungal and healing properties when eaten. I do not know if that helps but it is worth a try!

rawlight, I'll give the tea tree oil a try. This will be a good one to test that on because it is so small. What the heck, it can't sting anymore that hydrogen peroxide.

Honey tastes a lot better than any other medicine I've tried on cold sores.

RAWmen, coconut oil...YES! That's another thing I could apply and eat.

I would love to be helpful to you, but I have no clue. About those cheesy kale chips...I can't recall how to send you a private message and I would really like to dialogue with you.

Follow up....I'm convinced the "Really Raw Honey" was a MIRACLE cure. I took a little bit of this unfiltered honey along with some of the pollen on top of it, mixed it together using the back of a spoon and kept my lip coated with it from the first tingle of the cold, before it started swelling and blistering. IT REALLY WORKED TO KEEP THE SORE FROM GROWING. I only got one little blister that wasn't noticable. After it broke I stopped using the honey and let it heal on it's own. I have since bought another jar. My house will never be without this remedy at the ready.
