sweet grandma

I had a great weekend of juicing! It worked easily to take the frozen juice w/ me skiing. It didn't quite finish defrosting by the time I was ready to drink it (it was more of a slushy), so I poured in some hot water to get it to finish melting. It worked, but wasn't ideal because then the juice was watered down. Oh well, it still tasted good. Now I know if I want to do it again, to take the juice out of the freezer the night before and put it in the fridge - then it will have started melting part of the way.

Saturday evening my husband's grandma, aunt & uncle came to see our condo. His grandma was here from out of town and had not seen our new home yet (we moved in August). My sweet hubby had told them already about my being raw now, so they were asking me questions about it. We were having lunch at his aunt's the next day, so she was wondering what I would like to eat. I told them I was doing a juice fast, so she didn't need to make anything for me. Then she said that she had a juicer, so if I brought produce with me, I could make whatever I wanted! How cool!!!

On Sunday when we were there, I made two juices. first: apple, pear, fennel, ginger, mint, and lemon. second: carrot, apple, pear, ginger, lemon. They were both yummy! his aunt and grandma tried some and all liked it...so did my hubby :)

His grandma is so sweet - she offered to get us a juicer as a house warming present!!! Aw, so nice! The really funny thing is that the day before, my husband mentioned getting one for me for Valentine's Day. Oh so cute of him!!! But I had said we didn't need to spend that much money right now. But hey - getting one as a house warming present is perfect!

So...question to all you with juicers out there...what brand & model do you have? Any that you have tried that I should avoid?

Sounds like a lovely weekend. How nice of Grandma! If someone was going to buy me a juicer I'd have the same question. It sure would NOT be the Jack Lalanne I have now unless price was an issue. ($99 at Costco). The Juiceman is one step up at $179, more powerful and easier to clean. But I don't think either qualifies as a raw foodist's dream juicer. Your juice recipes sound delicious. :)

We have a Champion and I love it! We bought is severn years ago and it is still going strong. They are very easy to assemble and super easy to clean. Also if you ever lose a part or break a part (which has never happened to us) you can buy just the part you need.
I love this juicer. I already told my dd (who is almost 12) that I am getting her a juicer as a wedding gift when she gets married. Granted that is not for a long time, but just goes to show how much I love my juicer.
You can also make yummy raw ice cream in the Champion using frozen fruit. It is suppossed to be able to do nut butters as well, but i have found it to be a pain to do that.
We bought ours for $250, 7 years ago. I think that they are cheaper now. I'd check out e-bay.
Another good one is the Green Star but that is more expensive.

I have a Jack Lalaine - I would use it more if it were easier to clean. There have been times when I have tried to juice lemon in there and a seed will get stuck then it starts smoking other than that the cost was in my budget. My ultimate goal juicer would be a Greenstar ( the gears on some of the juicers I have seen have a Melamine Auger which kind of scares me)

    Thanks everyone!
Knitster - sorry the Jack Lalanne isn't great. Can you return it? The one I used this weekend was a Juiceman and it seemed to work well.
IamLoved - do you know which champion model you have? or which Green Star you would get?

I checked online and we paid extra money to get the commercial model. It was so long ago I had to actually check. Here is a link to the different models that they have.

    Happy hunting!

rawchic - I want to thank you for telling us about freezing your juice the night before. Getting a juice or smoothie early in the a.m. here is difficult because of the noise of the vitamix bothering others in the household. But now I will try it at night. This should prevent the drink from changing in taste - I hope! Thanks again.

I didn't mean to say I don't like my Jack L. I've been using it for years. Just can't recommend them because it does slow down or even stick on kale and gives off a burnt wiring smell, it will spin out of balance which can be scary, and it's hard to clean. But I've gotten used to it and don't overload it.

Rawchic, I just bought myself a 2nd juicer - a Breville Juice Fountain Elite - and I just used it for the first time making the Super Fat Burner drink with grapefruit and cranberry etc. It is just awesome (rawsome?). It is quiet, but very powerful and easy to clean and assemble. I also have the Omega single auger juicer but I find the spout too small. This Breville has a huge spout (feed tube) and thus is so much faster. It all depends what your needs are I guess. I will keep the Omega for some raw foods though. I can't see how the nutrients could have been destroyed as all was cool and I drank it immediately. I'm very happy with this machine. I saw a video on line which cinched my decision to buy it.
