Habits and Addictions

I've been reading Paul Nison's book today, "Raw Food Formula for Health". Most of it I'm already familiar with through the books of Gabrial Cousens, David Wolfe, Alissa Cohen and many others. But I'm looking for new inspiration and I found it in Paul's book:

"A habit is something we do on a regular basis that we could stop doing if we were highly motivated to quit. An addiction is something we are compelled to do even when we know it is harmful. "

I have overcome my addiction to cooked food. Now I need to break my habit of overeating.

I'm preparing for the detox of a juice fast by eating lighter and simpler for the next 5 days, followed by a modified 3 day fast, with juice only on the 2nd day. I plan to rest and relax for those 3 days. Follow that with another 5 days of light and simple.

During this 13 day period the dehydrator will not be turned on, I will not be making raw recipes, or any raw candy.

I'm not looking on it as a hardship. It's a vacation for my digestive system. I look forward to it as a time for observation and detoxification.

This is where I need to put my mind. I think I need do the next 2 days of lighter eating and then the following 3 days of light and smoothies. Then follow it with the same pattern. I'm with ya!

Okay, but you still have time to use up some of that good stuff you bought at WFM in the next 2-3 days. I'm giving myself permission to eat up my kale chips over the next two days. I still have some chocolate left too, but I didn't want any today. I've had my fill.

    Yes!

I think I need help preparing myself mentally for this. Do you have any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks for sharing Rawknitster - a good reminder for me to ponder. Do you think the overeating is linked to the colder season right now? I made your terriakyi kale chips on Sunday - I love, love, love that dressing!! I stood at the dehydrator eating the 1/2 dried gooey ones yesterday....yum yum. Best of luck to you on your modified fasting! Hopefully I'll get to check in more often~monk~

Sounds like a good plan. When I first starting fasting I would have to build myself up for it. Once I am in the fast I am ok, with each fast I do the next one gets easier too. For me doing a fast is what got me started on the rawfood path so it really helped in breaking me of my bad food habits, I hope that it helps you achieve your goals as well.

I will be cheering you on from the sidelines.

Jen, I'm not sure I have any ideas other than to look forward to it. "It's a tune-up that is going to make me feel great." "I will succeed." Would you call that positive affirmation? I suggest removing temptations. I can't get rid of everything but I can put the cashews, almonds and sunflower seeds somewhere I won't see them and can't easily access them.

monk, I don't think so, the cold may affect what I eat, but not the overeating. It is a life-long habit that I'm growing weary of. Glad you like those kale chips, they are special. I ate most of them right out of the dehydrator, too. That does NOT count as overeating! :)

Melissa and rawchic, If I have any trouble sticking to the plan I'll think of you and your success at juice fasting. Your both perfect role models.

Looking back at the Habits and Addictions. I think sometimes Habits can turn into Addictions because, the body mind is so trained for the habit that to take it away becomes overwhelming. IE: Smoking, Drinking, Overeating..........can all be just habits that turn into addictions because, we cross the line and continue wheter it is harming us or not. Or maybe, I'm just flowing out into the Universe too Far! hehehehe :)

I have diffently gotten in the habit of overeating and munching/nibbling just for the sake of it. I mine as well just chew gum..........geeeeeeeez!

I am looking forward to this feast/fast with you. Today is the 1st day of preparedness and I am soooooooooo ready!

Not so far out, jen. I think your on to something. I read that page of the book again this morning, Paul writes of changing addictions to habits and then breaking them. If it can work one way, the opposite must be true as well. He also writes, " To overcome addictions, we need to understand and have faith in the great healing powers of the human body, seek our Creator for wisdom, and find support from friends and family. Accompany that with natural methods such as herbs, food, rest, sunlight, exercise, and fresh air. Then, just let the body do the job is was designed to do."

All I need now are the rest, sunlight, exercise, and fresh air. :):)

:) I'm getting ready to exercise now. :)

I do feel that without the Help of a Higher Power and Like Minded Souls I couldn't overcome 1/2 of what I have and what I am about to do.

I am really gearing myself up and wanting to be a good supportive and strong fast/feast buddy. I not only want to do this for you but, need/want it for me.
