My Secret Weapon

Rate this Entry
My secret weapon against S.A.D. is always having something raw to look forward to. Let's face it, we live in a cooked world and during transition we have to fortify ourselves to withstand it's enticements.

Yesterday I made chocolate chip pancakes for my daugher and her friend. I didn't want any. I remember what pancakes and syrup do to me. Just to be safe, I made a smoothie; a young coconut, juice of 2 oranges, 12 cashews, a date, and about 1" of a vanilla bean. When the pancakes were done I had my secret weapon loaded and ready to protect me. It was delicious.

I took my daughter and her friend out for a few hours. First stop was dalene's for raw caramels, just to have them handy. We went to a craft store, (yeh, yarn again), then to the Rose Garden at Woodland Park Zoo. Just walked around admiring the beauty and fragrances. The girls didn't want to go into the zoo. The pancakes had worn off and they were famished. On the way home we stopped at one of our favorites, Dick's Drive In. The girls went to the window to get cheeseburgers, fries, and shakes. I pulled out my secret weapon, raw caramels. They were delicious.

I still had to fix dinner for my husband. I made him a pizza, but before I grated the mozzarella cheese I drank a pint of water. Also started prepping my secret weapon, little sandwiches of onion crackers, nutcheese, and micro greens, with a salad; dark green lettuce, red pepper and cucumber, sprinkled with raw vinegar and olive oil. By the time that pizza was out of the oven I was ready to eat my food. It was delicious. After dinner there was one piece of pizza untouched. Everyone had left the kitchen. It was just me and that piece of pizza. I wrapped it up and put it in the fridge. Couldn't have taken a bite even if I'd wanted to.

As for today...had my usual breakfast; almond milk (frothed with the hand blender), raw honey and a little coffee. Later I ate a large mango and 5 soaked almonds. This afternoon I had a really good green smoothie; apple, lettuce, 2 t. agave, with greengrass powder and spirulina on the side.

I drove my daughter and a (boy!) friend to the movie theater. She's almost 15 and it's her first time out with a boy. (YIKES!) How would I cope? Would I turn to food for comfort? Wasn't sure I could even eat my stomach was in such a knot. When I got home and smelled that pork roast in the oven I knew I needed a heavy duty secret weapon. By the time the pork came out of the oven I had made my dinner. Raw marinara on strips of summer squash, dotted with olives, green onions, and walnut-pinenut "parm". It was delicious.

It's a cooked world. We can't change that. Be prepared.

You are so right!! With raw, it's all about being prepared...and I think navigating from a food-centric existence. With that I mean, re-learning how to express discomfort, love, happiness without food being the focal point. You sound like you're doing beautifully!

Great advice! Thanks also for the raw food ideas. I intend to follow your lead. Tomorrow I leave SAD for good. If I'm not hungry, if I have something raw to substitute immediately for the tempting cooked food, I can live this way forever. Thanks!

Oh you are so focused now, RawKnitster. Good girl - your sound like you are doing so well. It was great to read your blog again. How did your dear girl's date go? I truly believe that you will be better able to deal with all that each day entails as long as you eat raw food. Last week proved that for me.:)
