Anyone know what this is?

Rate this Entry
So here I am in Laguna and we have a great little outside deck with a yard and this huge tree. My dogs are eating these things that are falling from it. Does anyone know what they are and if they are ok for dogs?

The inside nut smells a little perfumey to me and the outside is almost like a date but hard when dried. I just want to make sure these aren’t poisonous to them. As you can see I have my finger inside of Rocco’s mouth but he really loves them. I’ve been chasing the dogs around taking them away from them but the ground is totally covered with these things!

Thanks!

I'm not sure what they are but because it's a natural instinct to eat them wouldn't this mean that it is ok for them?

I totally agree with rawfiredancer. When I had dogs, they completely tore apart my backyard and ate everything, except for one flower bush, which we later learned were very poisonous. So, trust your dogs, they'll know. But it would be nice to know what they were, so maybe you could eat them too!

I just posted this picture on a botanical forum site so I'll let you know what I find out.

This is what I learned from the site:
Looks like Eriobotrya japonica, loquat. The seeds are very toxic, but the fruit is edible. The plants you have look to be burned by the sun or something. You may just want to remove the fruit.
    Agree with Loquat.
The fruit is edible; while the seed is poisonous, it is very unlikely to cause poisoning, normally it would pass through the gut unaffected (that's how the seed is dispersed in the wild by fruit-eating animals).

So I guess to ere on the side of caution you should just remove the fruit, but they did say it's unlikely they'll get poisoned. But at least now you know!!

I saw this new fruit at Kroger store. It is called Star Fruits. It does look kind of like stars when you slice them. Oh, the seeds are toxic. Wow! I learned something tonight to be careful eating this fruit. I almost bought it the other day but I had forgotten my purse with the money and had to leave the bag at the store to buy it later. I came too late to the store that they had put all the groceries back on the shelves. Ha!

You can't always trust the dogs instincts. We had a dog who loved seedless green grapes and macadamia nuts. Come to find out that these are both verrrry bad for dogs.

I'm trying to comment on your most recent blog, "My Life As of Today" but am unable to do so, so was able to here:

Sounds like you are leading a hectic life. Aren't you nearing 40? Do you want children? If so, pls don't wait as those eggs are getting old!!!!

It sounds like carob pods to me. I don't know if they're dangerous to dogs. You could look them up and see if the things in your yard matches the picture of a carob pod.
