My sister and I have been raw since August. My teeth are getting whiter, while hers are getting yellow. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a "cure"? Is it a normal part of going raw and will eventually subside?

When I got "hooked" on cacao my teeth got SO yellow. And my teeth were the one thing that I was VERY proud of, white as chalk. I quit the cacao and carob and they have improved but not like they use to be and I have to confess as much as I am against teeth whiteners I broke down and used one. 3% H2O2 just didn't do anything for me.

Sorry I don't have anything great to tell you. But I can relate :(

how sad. my teeth are getting darker too-- and i didn't even think about the raw chocolate nibs that i LOVE! i was leaning more towards blaming kale, since i eat much more of it. has anyone tried eco-dent's extra brite tooth powder? although i'm not a fan of a couple of their ingredients- their toothpowders do look better to me than most pastes- and i noticed they have the whitening powder with calcium peroxide. since i never thought i'd be thinking about whitening my teeth (and not sure i will) i've never researched whiteners and know little about calcium peroxide's safety regarding abrasitivity, etc..

uncle harry's makes fantastic toothpastes. they are clay based with other ingredients including peppermint oil (and the peppermint oil plumps your lips and makes them pinker, temporarily). immediately after i started using this toothpaste, my teeth became significantly whiter and they weren't even very discolored to begin with!

also, this toothpaste has no flouride, no glycerin and no preservatives or artificial ingredients. i love it! ;)

I knew a girl in high school who had the whitest teeth I had ever seen. She was always complemented, but she said that is was actually a deformity (something to do with lack of calcium I think.) So maybe really healty teeth aren't as white. I wonder now. Hmmm....

I use Tooth Soap (that you can buy on Frederic Patenude's Website, and I also use PEELU, which you can get at Wild Oats or Whole Foods, it's a natural teeth whitener I find it VERY useful... my teeth are pretty white. I also find that the more calcium I eat the better. After I eat dark greens, my mouth will turn kinda green, so if u brush immediately after that (or after any meal which you should do), it will probably help you a lot. Hope that helps.

I visited the Uncle Harry's website and noticed that the toothpastes DO contain glycerine. The tooth POWDERS do not, though.

debrah,

you're right. i think that must be a new addition as my jar at home does not have glycerin in the ingredients. if you look at the picture on this link, it still says "no glycerin" on the label, despite the fact that it is listed in the ingredients. i wonder why they added it, how disappointing. :(

Hi I agree with Amberly, teeth are not supposed to be white, or else they would be.

The whitest teeth are extremely pourous, and very unhealthy, this has been proven over and over again.

Teeth that are healthy and have good enamel, are a nice pretty yellowish almost slightly gray.

The brown ones are not good either. and black is really bad.

But white is worse than the black, they are not strong at all, like the girl said about her own teeth a lack of calcium.

So, love your teeth exactly as they are, and dont' use glycerin because that keeps your enamel from forming and will actually cause you lots of challenges.

Dentists recommend toothpaste, that should be the number one clue here.

you can brush your teeth with water if you like, I use some food grade hydrogen peroxide, 3 drops on a tooth brush, your teeth will be nice, and your breath will be fresh, if you add a drop of peppermint essential oil or clove, or cinnamon, we just grab a handful of mint leaves and chew on them.

But really, just think about it, extra white teeth, black eye lashes, tanned skin, bleached blond hair, ruby red shiny lips, is any of this natural?

I'd rather be healthy and keep my teeth, please please reconsider whitening your teeth- nobody ever thought about whitening their teeth until some tooth whitening manufacturer decided to sell this stuff, and then started advertising it, and all. Look at some old movies, and all of the actors and actresses have normal teeth, not white super straight, big huge teeth, why are they so popular now? I've never understood it, same with guys with shaved heads, and women with straggly hair, ick.

That is disappointing. Is glycerine added for mouthfeel? I have been avoiding most standard toothpastes for years because of the detergents (SLS) in them. Even many of the "natural" brands contain SLS. However, I have yet to find a satisfactory & inexpensive alternative that I like.

Rawpriestess,
Thank you for putting teeth-whitening in perspective.

Just a FYI caution:
If you have mercury amalgam fillings in your mouth then 3% hydrogen peroxide is a bad idea. The H2O2 will actually cause those metals to oxidize and break down thus leaching more mercury into your system.

Thanks Kris! I'm glad to hear that glycerine has been dropped from the formula.

L'angelbleu, thank you for posting that. I have mercury fillings and have used H2O2 on occasion. Never again! Don't much care for the stuff anyway--there has to be a gentler, better-tasting option (for those who want to use something in addition to water).
