It seems that almost everyday I ask myself "what in the world am I going to feed that kid of mine".
We could all use a bit of inspiration so I would like to ask everyone if they wouldnt mind sharing what your child eats. We are not here to judge but to get ideas.
I ask for pictures as I have found that when I am sitting here looking through this site, my 5 yr old comes and asks to see the food pictures and has asked me to make many of the items. Today it was the chocolate pudding post.
We all want to give our kids the best but it can be so frustrating when they just will not eat what we give the.
I would also ask for you to include your tip for getting your kid to eat raw.
Thanks everyone! :D
UPDATE: You may find that some of the images in this THREAD are not showing up. I believe this is because the site has been updated at least twice since I posted them. However, if you click on the image box you will get the viewable image in a another window!

sorry I don't have pics-but the dc's favorites are Alissa's Pizza (using the easist crust recipe), Alissa's carrot pecan burgers (8 yo Gus ate SEVEN of them last night!!! ), and Alissa's Crepes. They'll also eat anything with honey mustard dressing on it. And they like anything wrapped in lettuce. :D

We had a need for some warming soup today - it snowed yesterday. My daughter always liked chicken & rice soup so I came up with this recipe. not totally raw but nice for the kids.
1 organic veg stock cube
spot of boiing water
warm water (use thermomitor)
3" peeled courgette/zucchini
mushrooms (finely chopped & marinated in poultry seasoning & olive oil)
Get a mug, place stock cube in and pou just enough boiling water to dissolve, set aside. Use your Saladaco on the zucchini to get fine threads then chop into rice sized pieces or leave long for noodles. Put mushrooms (this is the chicken) in collander and rinse. Put zucchini & mushrooms in mug and add warm water to taste. Stir and serve!
This is very satisfying. If you want to go that extra mile dice and dehydrate some carrots the following night and also add to soup!

Sorry, I don't have a digital camera. I'm not that technilogically advanced yet!
My kids usually have green smoothies 1-3 times/day and the rest of the day they just snack on mostly fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, grapes and whatever else is available). When I make a salad they usually ask for some of mine if I don't make them their own! They also like to have a few nuts/seeds most every day.........they especially like almond butter. We don't usually do meals anymore.
I don't normally make recipes except on special occassions or something simple in the blender, like some dressing, but I do make raw birthday cakes! Last year I made the Boutenko's Raw Unchocolate Cake about 4 times. We all love that one! YUM! :p
Some other favorites of my kids are dates and other dried fruit (I try to limit these though) and Black Tar (raw vegan chocolate sauce).
As for my advice on how to get your kids to eat more raw, well, just don't offer them anything else! I know it sounds harsh, but I promise you they won't starve! They'll come around! LOL! ;) When I transitioned my kids to high raw, my son didn't eat anything for a whole day, and I was afraid it might last longer and worried that I couldn't hold out. Well, the next day he pigged out on salad all day long! Now that same kid is rarely seen without an apple! LOL!

I totally agree, when they are hungry they WILL eat. i think nowadays we are so worried that our kids might be hungry - why - whats the big!
I am glad to see your kids eat very lightly. Mine do too and I was a bit concerned but they are happy and eatvery simillar to yours!
Thanks for the post :)

I am having a hard time snrolling my kids to eat raw, mostly because of their age, I"m sure. My daughter is 12 and my son is 9. they will drink smoothies and my daughter loves young coconut and she'll eat salads, but they don't like the "raw recipes" I make and I am the "weird mom", especially to my daughter (you know, middle school and all that). But I'll keep working on it. I wish I could just get rid of the stove already!!! Thanks for the great sharings and photos!

I don't know how you get your kids to eat all that? Are they naturally egar to eat raw. I don't think my son would even try half of that. It looks soo good but my son loves very few raw things :o

Same here. My kids won't eat anything raw that is prepared as a dish, I do good enough to get them to snack on just raw fruits throughout the day. And we've been a vegan family their entire lives!
They will even tell my Mom when she comes home (Nana lives with us) that they are hungry and all they had all day was FRUIT and it's the way they say it to her they make it sound like I starved them! We tried a whole 2 weeks of nothing but fruit/veggies all day until dinner and they did! She came home from work and they hounded her with "NANA! We're HUNGRY!!! All we've had all day is FRUIT!!!!" with sad puppy faces included!
So yeah, when I try the raw on them,my kids think I'm mean/cruel and starving them.
And yes. When we did that 2 week trial, they had PLENTY to eat, they ate on it all day, and STILL told her they were hungry/starving and all they had was OMG fruits and veggies OMG.

Also, EPPP, that stuff looks great but I know if I made some of it and serve dit as "dinner" to my kids, as soon as they were done, they'd wait about an hour and then start whining that they are hungry and would ask me "What's for dinner???" and if I told them that the healthful stuff they just ate was their dinner, my oldest would argue that is surely was NOT dinner, just a healthy snack. :(

I totally agree with the above poster... My boys (5,3, 19m.) would be so hungry shortly after that. Is there a transitional period of time from vegetarian to raw or (like us...:o ) SAD to raw where the raw just doesn't fill you up, then all of the sudden less is more?
I wonder sometimes if my kids will ever transition more to raw...

Another winner from Anna!
Banana Nut "Pan" Cakes by Maraw
1c. brazil Nuts
1c. Pecans
4 lg Bananas
1/2c. Almond milk
1 date, pitted, soft or softened
1/4t. Cinnamon
1/4t. Nutmeg
1/2t. Salt
Wizz all in FP till very smooth. Pour onto Teflex sheets into rounds of 1/4-3/8". Allow to dehydrate 9hrs/115 degrees, overnight works well. Flp onto screen continue to dehydrate 2-3 hrs.
I added blueberries and used a large round cookie cutter to make shapes.
I just make these before bed and flip them very early in the a.m. these are best eaten fresh. I personally love them sprinkled with chopped pecans as they give a great texture compliment to the soft pancake. This batter lasts at least a week in the coldest part of the fridge.

Hmmm, let me think  . . . the first go were a bit too thin and did three of the trays you see (I have the four tray) with enough batter to make five more plus a bowl for my son as a porrage. So lets say aprox 15-20!
My DD ate the entire tray you see in the photo this morning for breakfast!
I loved that they were not too banana tasting. Also perhaps reserving some that is not so well blended is a good idea for those who like it a bit nutty!:p

Yes, I use the Cuisinart "bowl in freezer" sort. Not expensive at all a no brainer maker. I know Williams Sonoma have it for about $50 but I am sure you can get it elsewhere for cheaper; perhaps Target.
I posted the recipe from the book Vice Cream because I altered it to my taste.

What kid does not like donuts! I love being able to sometimes present items to my daughter (7) that mimic SAD foods well and this does the trick.
Some of you may be up in arms and think why would I want to mimic SAD. Well one good example is that she is going to a BDay party tomorrow and I will be sending her with one of these made into a piece of "cake" shape so that she can particapate in the celebrations without feeling singled out.
The recipe is ani phyo's donut holes w/o the coconut.
Chocolate "Sauce / Ganache"
cocoa butter
coconut butter (you can use all coconut butter too)
cocoa powder
agave
maple (just a touch to round out the flavour)
salt
I only make a small qty at a time and use equal parts of the butters then add the rest to taste so like 1-2T ea. of butters, 1t. cocoa, 1t. agave 1/2t. maple, pinch of salt
melted over hot water. not on stove just from the boiled kettle. I use a heavy 2c. glass measuring cup in a 4c. measuring cup (see 2nd pic in post #35). Cover fruit and pop in freezer to harden.
Donut "Batter" (also used for cupcakes in post #48 of this Thread)
1 3/4c. almonds, ground to flour
1/2t. salt
1 vanilla bean, scraped
2c. dried unsweetned pineapple, chopped small
2c. dates, pitted
1/4c. dried unsweetened coconut (to roll in)
Put all but coconut in food processor. Process to mixed. Do not over process or will get oily. Form in to desired shape. There are great both undehydrated and dehydrated. If not dehydrating keep in fridge.
Her recipe calls for this to be much more chunky but we prefer a fine crumb.
Enjoy!

Corn Chowder from ani phyo's book.
My kids did not like it but not because it was bad. I sometimes forget they dont like dairylike creamy things. I think this is because they were raised from the beginning without milk in their diet.
The soup was very easy and tasty!
I really like your idea of sending your daughter off with the raw donuts... Obviously raw food is as beneficial to the body as it gets, but that can really wreak havoc on a kid to feel singled out.
I really enjoy this thread. :)

Radiantly Raw : I have written it in the Donuts post, thanks for asking!:)
This morning we did apple sauce. This is the time of year when our meals, especially breakfasts get a bit heavier. The kids just naturally express this preference which I think is great. Their body is talking and most importantly they are listening!
Apples & pears become a breakfast staple and so I have come up with many recipes to avoid boardom! :o
Simple Apple Sauce:
2-4 apples - cored not peeled
2-4 pitted dates - no need to soak unless like rocks!
handfull of nuts (pecans, walnuts, cashews) add more or less as you require
cinnamon / nutmeg (not too much)
handful raisins or currents
chop all apples. Put in 1/2 apples, dates, spice & nuts into FP and process till almost smooth. Add remaining apples pulse till desired consistancy. add raisins puls just to mix in and serve.
cover leftovers and keep in fridge. top will turn brown so eith
If you find you sauce to watery put in a collander over a bowl and let sit. It will take awhile but does make it nicer.

OK, we just arrived back from the BDay party (7 yr olds). It went really well. I packed up Isabels Hello Kitty mini Bento box (kids always love to see this box) to have while they ate pizza and sent her with a Chocolate cupcake I mentioned earlier today.
I made it as descrbed in post #43 of this thread. To make into a cupcake I pressed into a cupcake paper in a muffin tin 1/3 "cake", followed by raspberry jam, more "cake" then topped off with the chocolate ganache and chilled!
It was a huge hit and everyone wanted to know about it. So I feel great; my goal was that she not feel singled out & wierd!
. . . and yes those ARE a few commercial sprinkles. I had made orange icing (cashews, beet juice, orange juice, cocnut oil, sweetner) to decorate with but forgot to chill overnight! So i used the sprinkles letting her place each on as she doesnt like them - she just picks them off!
See recipe in post #43 of this Thread Cake is Ani Pyho Donut hole recipe!

I made these and they take quite awhile to dehydrate then come out looking like blk/brwn "piles". So unappatising I actually was going to toss them. I stepped away and the next thing I noticed my daughter had put two plates with said muffins on the table and they were both sitting there happily munching away  !
I did not see this recipe in her book but in Shazzie's great DVD series (remember Alissa's first!!! :) ).
Blueberry Muffins
1 banana
1/2c. fresh blueberries (or fzn, thawed no including resulting liquid)
15 dried apricots
1c. germinated almonds
1/2c. germinated Kamut grain
1/2c. germinated wheat grain (I used spelt for lower gluten)
Put all but fresh/frozen blueberries into food processor. Process till very well incorporated. Add remaining blueberries and pulse just to mixed in but still keeping their shape.
Spoon loosely into paperless muffin tins. Dehydrate overnight. Remove from tin onto dehydrating screen, placeing upside down. I scored the bottom with a deep edge to edge X at this point to assist with dehydration of interrior. Continue dehydrating untill end of day or desired firmness. Keep in fridge or freezer.
I had doubled the batch and they lasted in the fridge for three weeks!.
Sorry to diisapoint with no photos. I will post some next time or feel free to post your pics too! :p
TIP: These would travel quite well w/o keeping cold!

 :(
OK we have all been there; I just realised I have untterly NO food in the house! It's 11pm and i have two breakfasts and two lunches to pack. . .
So I was scrounging in the fridge and came across what I thought was fridge casualty and LO and BEHOLD it turned out to be Maraws pancake batter!
Firstly I was bummed that I had forgotten it and would now have to toss it. BUT, it was FINE; totally yummy, not even a bit iffy!
So I strongly recommend EVERYONE make up a batch of this to keep in the fridge as it L A S T S! I would guesstimate it's been in there just over a week

Mushroom Burger
Onion Bread:
1 sweet onion, diced or sliced thin
1/2 cup flax seeds, ground in a coffee grinder
1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds ground in a coffee grinder
2 TBLS Nama Shoyu
2 TBLS extra virgin olive oil
4 TBLS water
sesame seeds for the top
Mix all ingredients, except onion in a bowl. Add onion and spread onto Teflex sheets about 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Dehydrate for about 24 hours. Flip after about 12 hrs. (I don't have a dehyrdator yet, so I did it in the oven for an extended period of time at 115 degrees)
Almond Mayo:
1/2 cup almonds, soaked overnight, rinsed, drained and peeled
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp celtic sea salt
Juice of one lemon
1/4 cup virgin olive oil
Blend all but the oil in the blender (vitamix) until smooth and then drizzle in the oil while blending. (I did this in my food processor, just because I don't have a vitamix)
Raw Ketchup:
1 cup sundried tomatoes soaked for about an hour
1 cup chopped fresh tomato
1 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar
1 TBLS Nama Shoyu
1 clove garlic, pressed
1/4 cup onion
3 dates, pitted
1/2 tsp. allspice
2 TBLS olive oil
Blend all ingredients ingredients in a blender. (I didn't make this, but it sounds good...I had some other stuff I used that tasted like ketchup that i needed to use up)
So to make the sandwich you just slice and marinate some Portabello mushrooms in a little olive oil and shoyu for about an hour and then make the sandwich with your dressings and some lettuce, tomato, onion and the mushrooms.
This amazing multi-layered pie was a big hit!
Crust:
2 cups walnuts soaked several hours and rinsed
1 ripe banana
1 cup raisin
1 Tbs. orange juice
Blend in the food processor until you get a sticky ball consistency. Press into your pie plate with wet fingers.
Candy layer:
2 Tbs. raw cacao powder
1 Tbs. coconut oil
1 Tbs. flax oil
1/2 tsp. agave syrup
1/4 tsp. vanilla
Mix well until smooth by hand and pour onto your pie crust. Place in the freezer while making the fillings.
Cashew layer:
2 cups cashews soaked 1 hour and rinsed.
1 tsp. vanilla
3 Tbs. coconut oil
1 Tbs. agave syrup
1/2 tsp. salt
Blend ingredients in your vitamix or blender (I did in food processor) only adding water if needed to blend smooth. You want this thick and creamy. Pour and spread over the candy layer.
Raspberry layer:
1 pint Mashed raspberries.
Spread over cashew layer.
Chocolate cream layer:
2 small avocadoes
1 tsp. vanilla
3 Tbs. raw cacao powder
2-3 Tbs. agave syrup
2 Tbs. coconut oil
Just enough nut milk to blend (use your favorite)
Blend in the vitamix until creamy and smooth. Spread chocolate cream over the raspberry layer and refrigerate the pie for several hours or until set up. You can also freeze it for 30 minutes for a quicker serve time. Do not totally freeze this pie because it will killl some of the enzymes.
I got both recipes off an awesome blog I came across. The sandwich is so good though, and DD loved it!! She loves the pie too!! DH loves both as well!!

Well yesterday I was bleassed with a HUGE box of apples newly felled from a tree from the wind storm. I gladly took all of them even though many will need a lot of work.
So this morning I made an apple breakfast inspired by Radiantly Raws cinnamon apples post yeasterday. Keeping with the change in season apple breakfasts!
Chunky Spiced Apples
1 apple cut up
1/2 raw bar cut up, I used apple Lara Bar
cinnamon or mixed spice
liquid sweentner, I used 50/50 honey & agave
water, like a 1/2 t.
1t. flax seeds (optional)
Mix spice, sweetner & water in small bowl. Place apples and reaw bar in bowl. Pour sauce over - not too much, you will have leftover sauce. Serve.
This could also be done the night before and tossed into the dehydtrator.
Enjoy!

I made this yesterday. Sorry I never have pictures. You can find it at the daily raw cafe blog.
SPINACH-STUFFED MEATLOAF
*
2 cup walnuts, soaked for 4-6 hours
1 cup almonds, soaked for 4-6 hours
2 stalks celery, chopped
1/2 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup sun-dried tomatoes, soaked until soft, reserved 1 cup water
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
2 cups fresh spinach, washed and stemmed
2 tablespoons olive oil
Juice of one half lemon
2 teaspoon sea salt, divided
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup SUN-DRIED TOMATO KETCHUP (recipe follows)
1 Place spinach, olive oil, lemon juice and 1 teaspoon sea salt Ziploc bag and marinate for 1 hour.
2 In a food processor, combine walnuts, almonds, sun-dried tomatoes, 1/2 cup reserved tomato water, parsley, onion, garlic and celery. Add the remaining 1/2 cup water one tablespoon at a time to moisten the meat loaf. Be careful not to over moisten.
3 Place meatloaf mixture in a large bowl. Add poultry seasoning, pepper and 1 teaspoon sea salt. Mix well.
4 Spread meatloaf mixture on a Teflex sheet into a shape into a rectangle 3x9-inches . Place spinach mixture on top. Roll up the rectangle carefully, beginning at the short side and using the sheet to lift.
5 Transfer loaf to a second Teflex sheet. You should have enough meat to create three mini loaves.
6 Cover with sun-dried tomato ketchup. Place in dehydrator at 115 degrees for an hour.
7 Make 1 inch slices of meat and arrange on the Teflex.
8 Dehydrate at 115 degrees for an hour. Turn over slices, spread sun-dried tomato ketchup and dehydrate an additional hour.
SUN-DRIED TOMATO KETCHUP
1 cup sun-dried tomato, soaked, 1/4 c reserved water
1/4 cup raisins, soaked
1 T Italian Seasonings
1/4 tablespoon chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
Combine ingredients in a blender until mixture is slightly smooth, yet chunky.
I have to say that I cheated a little bit with that recipe. We made tons of ketchup and spagetti sauce from our garden tomatoes this year and canned them, so I'm slowly trying to use them up (that's before I decided to try eating all raw)...So I used the ketchup and sauce (in place of sun dried tomatoes) This was really good. The one thing I LOVVVE about raw food it the flavor. My daughter said this dish is "licious" (delicious)

Great thread! Love the pictures and descriptions.
My daughter (4.5) isn't all raw, but she eats an awful lot of raw & unadorned food.
I have found that providing food without making a big deal out if it seems to be the best approach with her. Also, I will put out school lunch trays with a wide assortment to pick from as she likes.
For example, a tray might have fresh cut up pears, cucumber salad, homemade trail mix, chips, sticks and dip, a big pile of fresh greens (she likes them plain - even kale) and maybe something she has requested like a not dog, raw cheese or Tings. By providing what she asks for she never feels denied and happily eats whatever else is on the tray.
I found that when I went all raw, she picked up on it, that I was doing something "different" and that the food was somehow different and less desirable. As soon as I stopped calling things raw and just referred to them as food, or the name or whatever, she came right around like there was nothing weird about it.
I have to say, I was forced by threat of starvation to eat certain foods as a child for my "wellbeing" so I am not very keen on that approach myself. And I have quite a few friends who were raised in vegetarian households that were extremely strict as well - so much so that at every opportunity they would be shoving hot dogs (real ones) down their throats and Mcdonalds and candy bars.... autonomy with guidance and explanations and exploration is a pretty good thing for kids IMHO!

This is a great thread for inspiration! Thanks!
My son isn't raw, he's a cooked veggie, but I try and get as much raw into him as I can.
My saving grace with him is that I've gotten him to drink green smoothies. He's a very fussy kid (6 years old) and always has been and so I developed a kid friendly green smoothie that he likes:
two large handfuls of greens (not ones that are too hot/spicy) such as kale, nettle, spinach, dark green lettuces or baby herb leaves etc.
enough water to blend the greens
half to one avocado
2 bananas
the juice of two oranges
He drinks this with no complaint.
And recently I've had another victory, he's started eating greens straight! Just munching on the leaves! That's huge for him!
He loves all the raw desserts I make, but isn't too keen on the savoury ones. But at least he eats 'salad plates' as he calls them, a fresh chopped variety of veggies. And he loves fruit.
EPPP, Dewdrop, thankyou for the lovely lunchbox photos, they are so inspirational. they remind me of raw versions of vegan lunchbox (www.veganlunchbox.com).

I had some soaked cashews I didn't know what to do with, so my daughter suggested that I make some "Cheeze" and I found a really simple recipe in the Cafe Gratitude book - farmer's cheese!
It was a super simple recipe, 1 1/2 cups soaked cashews, 1 T miso, 1 t coconut oil, and enough water to blend (I used a little less than 1/2 cup), then salt to taste.
My daughter ate a bowl of it like pudding :)
Hubby & I ate it on crackerbread with marinated broccoli & hijiki on top.
I think this recipe will be a staple in our house - it has such a simple flavor it could go with just about anything - and it is kid approved!

Ok, I will officially have to figure out how to use the digital camera AND download pics - but not today. I tried my own version of the "gorilla sandwich" for my lunch and I didn't even get a bite before my plate was empty! DD took one half and DS took the other. For anyone who may not know what a gorilla sandwich is (I didn't) it is a hollowed out cucumber (I used a melon baller) stuffed with filling. I used diced tomatoes, onion, olives, avocado then held together with a sunflower pate. Just cram it in there and enjoy. The second one I made I did actually get to eat and it was really pretty good.

Here is what my daughter had for breakfast this morning:
green smoothie made with nectarine, 1orange, 1 banana, lamquarter, chickweed ,dandelion leaves, coconut water, mesquite. I poured that over organic blueberries , topped with 1 tsp of tahini, some probiotics and enzymes and sprinkled with bee pollen and ground up macademia nuts.
For her lunch she requested "salad", I ask her what she wants in it and so it ended up being lettuce, avocado, tomato, red clover and alfalfa sprouts, purslane with a spinach, cucumber dill dressing and topped with flowers of which she wanted more of once she had eaten them all

Thank you for your kind comments :)
We had an interesting event end of last year: christmas party at her playcentre and of course they are all on the sad diet with lots of lollies, icecream is red and other colored wafers... anyway, we finally left, together with another woman who turned around to me and said " I'm so impressed by your little girl!"
she continued to tell me that my daughter asked her what she was eating ( she asked a lot of questions that day as she hadn't seen meat, sausages and lots of the sad food before). So the woman told her what it was ( I think it was cheese) and offered her some and that when my daughter replied " no thank you, it's not good for my tummy" in a very matter of fact way. I would have loved to have seen the face of the woman... I think she was pretty speechless! :D

Yummy! What kid does not like taco's:)
Soft Taco's
4 tortillas, make you own or in photo is from http://www.foodforlife.com/procart_catalog/index.cfm?CategoryID=4&do=subcat and are the Sprouted 100% Corn Tortillas not raw but great for those parents in a pinch!
1c. assorted nuts - I used walnuts, pecans & sunflower, any nut will do!
water - as needed
taco seasoning - I made this up ages ago , sorry dont remember; chili pwdr, cumin, salt, paprika etc I think:rolleyes:
diced avocado
salad
diced tomatos
salsa - just made a chunky marinara and put it in the dehydrator
I put a damp paper towel in a large frypan w a lid. With lid on, turned it on till warm. turn off heat. Placed tortillas on top of warm damp towls and replaced lid to gently warm through and make more pliable.
Put nut into FP or VM. Pulse until broken, not mushy. Add seasoning and do a quick pulse followed by a splash of water (slightly warm mixes better). Quick pulse again till desired texture. Dont over blend, you dont want babyfood. This is our taco meat.
Assemble as in photo. I found adding a "sour cream" made this a bit heavy:)
Enjoy!

Excellent, I love putting food within reach. We have a rule; no saying "I'm hungry". They must think what their tummy is asking for then think what foods would adress what they have come up with. This has been working very well. :p

Each peace, how are you? Hey I was wondering if you find 100% raw diet more expensive than traditional & vegetarian diets? Also how about time consuming?
Hello and welcome to this forum!
Is this more expensive than traditional eating? Yes and no.
Is food prep more time consuming / labour intensive than traditional eating? Yes and no.
The best way to look at it is as if you were to embark on learning a new language in a foreign country.
When you first move to the new country you have to outfit your new flat/cottage with all new equipment that you have no idea where to buy and when you finally get it cannot read the directions because it's in a different language!!!
Going raw is not like any of the other "diets" where you are handed a strict rule book and precise measurments and this is why going raw has a bit of a steeper learning curve.
When I first went raw I was overwhelmed with what I thought I need to "buy". I come from a gourmet background so wanted to make all the 'recipes' which can lead to a VERY high grocery bill. Then there was the time required to prepare everything for myself and two small kids OMG! I nearly went mad
Is it still like this for me? NO. What changed? Well to go back to my metaphor. I am finally fluent in the raw language and I am comfortable with the information I have learned in my new country, as there was not the basic rule book it just took time.
Trial and error and time are what made a day in the life of being raw easy. . .yes easy, I promise.
You do not need to make a recipe for every meal. I have narrowed it down to having these items on hand at all times:
marinara sauce, green & red (from Alissa's lasagna recipe)
raw mayo/aioli
2-4 dressings
2-3 pates/spreads/nut salads/cheeses
1-2 cookies
1-2 crackers - sweet & savory
1-2 breads - sweet & savory
jam (fruit blended with soaked dates let set overnight)
Avocados
bunch of greens
bunch of fruits
large bowl of chopped veg mix (for filling wraps, making salads, sandwiches and stirfrys)
You dont have to make these all at once. What happens is you build upon what you have so you end up making only what has run out.
for example: today I was dashing out for 3pm school run realising I had not eaten. I whipped open the fridge having no idea what I was going to eat spied mock chicken salad and a bunch of collard greens. Threw the collard in a tupperware slapped on some chic salad a few sliced tomatoes and rolled up - one chic salad collard wrap!! Then threw in an orange sliced into smiles. This took about four min. total.:p
What about the $$$$. Well it's the same again. Over time I have built up a full stocked raw pantry. When I first began I was frustrated I did not have all the raw bling. No one expects you to have a Whole Foods in your kitchen. You will need to build it up over time. The key is to build up over time. Every time I go to the store I try to buy one thing thats adds to the raw pantry. Obviously the more money you have the easier it will be, Lol!
My full raw kitchen took about two years to fill out. I also spend about $1300 a month on groceries for a family of 4 which includes one cooked eater and all the dry goods too.
Try not to be to frustrated by the recipes that no one would eat. This happens to ALL of us. One of my first dehydrated "patties" got called dog food by my husband. It was truly vile. Now more often than not my husband thinks my dinner looks better than his - no kidding!
Hope this extreamly long winded reply helps!
Cheers,
EPPP

Great post EPPP!
My favorite trick for cost reduction is subbing seeds for nuts in recipes.
So I use soaked sunflower seeds instead of cashews or almonds in my favorite pate & burgers and it saves a lot of money!
I was stocking up yesterday, and the raw, organic sunnies were about $1.60 /lb and the nuts were about $10 /lb. I still buy nuts and use them, just sparingly in comparison to what the recipes call for.
My kid (and everyone else) looooooves the cheddar cheese dip that was posted on the forum a while ago - and I make that with just sunflower seeds and no nuts. Very economical! And it seems to last a relatively long time in the fridge. (It is so sad to throw away food - especially when it is raw!)

Just thought of a time saver I've been using - Hazelnuts and Brazil nuts are the only nuts that don't have enzyme inhibitors - so no soaking required! You can make nut milk very quickly if you suddenly find you've run out. Other nuts I will soak/sprout then dehydrate to have on hand for recipes and snacking.

I adapted this recipe from the book Living Cuisine by Renee Loux Underkoffler. I do not like the taste of buckwheat and substituted almond meal instead.
This recipe makes a LOT but it's worth it!
Fig Newtons:
Dough
2.5 c. almonds (pref soaked & dehydrated)
1.5c. whole oat groats (soaked 1-2 days or more, changing water every day)
1.5.c. pitted soft dates (soak in 1c. water till soft)
2T.oilve oil
1T.vanilla
1.T. cinnamon
pinch salt
wax paper or parchment with a bit of oil rubbed on
Fig Filling
3c. dried figs, cut into quarters hard stem removed
1.5c. raisins
1T. lemon zest
To make the dough: In food processor(FP), grind almonds into flour. Set aside. In FP, chop oats, dates, olive oil, vanilla, cinnamon and salt into a paste. Transfet to a bowl. Mix into paste the almond flour by hand. The dough should be sticky but dry enought to hold shape when pressed.
To make the filling: Drain figs and set aside the soak water. This can be used to sweeten a smoothie or in marinades & sauces. In a FP, chop the figs, raisins and lemon zest into a smooth paste.
Split the dough into four equal parts, set aside. Make two or four equal sheets of wax paper sized to fit you dehydrator screens. Place one Teflex (or wax paper if no Teflex) onto hard counter, not on dehydrator tray. place 1/4 of dough in center. Cover with one sheet of wax paper and gently press down with hands when flat enough use a rolling pin and roll out to edges fairly thin but not too thin(see pic below). Cut off excess and use to fill in gaps. You want to reach all corners. Depending on size of your dehydrator you may need more or less of the dough. Just remember you need two equal parts for each tray of newtons.
There are two ways to complete this.
#1. Spread the filling over entire base leaving a 1/2" seam allowance. Roll out 2nd dough like the first and gently invert over 1st dough & filling.
#2. Spread filling over 1/2 of dough flipping uncovered 1/2 over filling side.
I personally prefer the the first way. Finish off remaing dough & filling. Dehydrate 108 12-20 hours until crust has formed. Invert an empty reay & screen over cookies and flip, carefully removing Teflex sheet. Gently cut into desired shapes and continue to dehydrate until crust forms but still moist inside. Yum!
These keep forever if well dehydrated.

Inspired by the recipe Come Bite The Apple Cookies from Matt Amsdens book RawVolution
Oaty Apple Cookie:
2 lbs red apples, 5-6 apples, such as gala, fuji etc.
1c. agave
1 3/4 almonds ground to rough not fine flour (if soaked & dehydrated use 2 1/4c almonds
1c. oat groats, rinsed, drained & processed in FP until creamy like porrage
1 1/4c. raisins
1/4c. cinnamon
almond butter: optional, add as needed if not holding together well.
In a FP, slice half the apples with the slicing disc. Transfer to a bowl, set aside. Slice remaining apples in FP with the shredding disc. Add to bowl of sliced apples then add agave, ground almonds, ground oats, raisins, & cinnamon. Mix with hands untill well incorporated. Add almond butter if needed. I used a molding ring to shape them.
Shape into cookies double the height you would want the dehydrated product. Dehydrate at 105 over night or until desired firmness.

Inspired by a recipe from Living Cuisine By Renee Loux Underkoffer
Raspberry Peach Torte:
6 peaches, pitted, peeled & sliced then freeze (I used pre-frozen, sliced)
1pt. berries, frozen
4T. agave/honey
1T. Vanilla
1pt. blueberries
Orange Creme Whip:
1.5c. cashews, soaked in 2c water for 30min.
.5c. pitted dates, soaked in OJ below
.5c. Orange Juice (have extra on hand if needed)
2T. vanilla
To make raspberry-peach torte base: Process peaches & raspberries, agave & vanilla in a FP. Flod in blueberries. Press into a 10" pie plate and place in freezer.
To make orange whip: In a VM add all orange creme ingredients and blend until smooth adding more OJ if needed. Spread onto frozen fruit base and re-freeze. Defrost for 10-15 min before serving.

the newest research shows that enzyme inhibitors on nuts are not a digestive concern. sorry i can't link you to a reference for that, i read it on rawfoodsupport where it was posted and referenced by one of the sciencey people. i believed it. soaking is good to soften and add water to nuts and seeds which makes them more digestible but this is not applicable if the nuts are then dried out again.

Thank you for the info, I'm sure your article has merrit. Unfortunatly for me though I have great difficulty digesting some unsoaked nuts & seeds especially almonds; I suffer from bloating, gas & cramps when I eat them unsoaked. Soaking and dehydrating them really makes a difference for me.
Intersting; I wonder if your info applied to all nuts and seeds?
Thanks for sharing:)

I have not come across that information before, so have only my only experience to judge by. I find soaked (whether dehydrated or not) nuts much easier to digest and I don't ever feel weighted down after a meal with them. It feels totally different when I eat unsoaked nuts. My almost 5 yr old daughter loves the soaked and dehydrated almonds, but not the ones I have not "processed". She can tell the difference!
By following the time guides in Alissa's book (and they are listed in others as well) I can soak, then sprout most nuts before using or dehydrating, which according to what I have read, increases and changes the nutritional content.

I recently had a an email from a new to raw parent wondering what to feed their toddler and thought I should post it here too.:)
Hi!
I’m so glad you are enjoying my threads and posts. My son has been raw from birth and is now 3 ½. And my daughter has been for three years now because of sever digestive issues. I strongly recommend you purchase the e-books about feeding kids by Jinjee at www.thegardendiet.com she and her husband Storm are raising FIVE beautiful raw kids and the youngest was born just last year (2007). Other books are:
Introducing Living Foods to your Child By Beth Montgomery (I like this little booklet if you can find it!)
Raw Kids by Cheryl Stoycoff
Baby Greens By Michaela Lynn & Michael Chrisemer (good for the science of feeding a little one)
http://www.rawbabyalex.blogspot.com/ - this is a great blog about what a mom feeds her little one
When I first started my son on solids I was still breastfeeding; I breastfed until he self weaned at about 2 ½ years. I read in Victoria Boutenkos book green for Life that the first few months of eating solids sets the body mindset to those foods and that is what your child will gravitate to as they grow up. I have two kids who strongly support this theory.
Here is a list of starter foods I used:
· Green smoothies : water, banana, orange, pear, spinach (is the mildest tasting & most nutritious)
· Mashed avocado: I like to add a tiny pinch of sea salt for the minerals
· Mashed banana
· Mashed avocado w/ banana
· Almond mush – soaked almonds blended with water adding what you like to flavour like banana, soaked raisins, soaked dates. Don’t introduce spices (cinnamon) to early. Also do not include too many nut too early
· Udo’s oil: 1t. a day quickly followed by a sip of smoothie; the earlier you introduce this the better as it does not taste great! My son loves it.
· Whole orange juice: combine water and 1 whole peeled orange in blender and blend till smooth.
· Apple sauce: just apples in a blender with skin. Feel free to add dates, banana, pears etc.
· Fruit salad: great finger food
· Nuts: the soft ones like macadamia, cashews, pecans. Most say to steer clear of giving young kids nuts. I wanted my son to be able to eat this healthy snack without worry of choking so I introduced them young with me in attendance until he became confident with them.
· Finger salad: get them used to eating veggies. Include finger sized veggies, celery, grape tomatoes, baby carrots, mung bean sprouts, etc.
· Dressing & dips: start experimenting with recipes for these so they can dip the veggies in
· Nut milks: these are great. I love to do combos like 1T. of pecans, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds and fresh water plus one date for a great taste. Add fruit of your choice for a fruit milkshake!\
· Apple slices dipped in nut butter
I suggest you do not feed your baby straight juices for many reasons. They are too concentrated and sweet and they will not drink anything else if you get them started. Perhaps when they are older you can introduce veg juices. My kids drink water, green smoothies & herb/fruit teas only – NO juices.
If you can swing it please buy a Vita Mix blender. It’s a lifesaver, truly! Try to keep the foods simple no complicated recipes, just not needed.
I hope this gets you going!
All the best,
Erin

Wow Erin, you never cease to amaze me! That is an incredible post!!! You've done it again. WOW!!!!:D Great info, really. Thank You!!!
whew, that's a terrific post! i'll copy that into my files.
i forgot to mention that, good point, about the nutritional content in nuts/seeds and grains going up with soaking/sprouting. for sure, the nutrient balance changes. that may well be what makes them more digestible, i do prefer them soaked as well. just thought i'd mention that about the enzyme inhibitors as i was surprised to find it out myself. it's worth it to know these things though, it certainly gives us more creditbility when talking to doubters or newbies to raw if we aren't telling them the wrong things!

I JUST HAD to post this gem. my son had just grabbed a cookie from the dehydrator.
The cookie is the same a the one in post # 96 , same bowl of batter I had not yet dehydrated. However for these I put half the batter back into the FP and blended a bit, then added to the remaining batter and stirred together. This made the cookies hold together better.
As you can see a satisfied customer!

My son's school has a no nuts policy :(. There goes many of the raw recipes he likes.
But this chocolate custard is a staple in his lunch box, this pic was taken today (the mint was put in there for decoration only, makes it look pretty!).
And I just found out he knows it has avocado in it! He doesn't like avocado but says he doesn't mind it in this recipe and also said that he's known I put avocado in it for ages. And here I was hiding the addition of avocado to this for so long!
He's so fussy, but as he gets older I'm noticing an increasing maturity when it comes to things he's not so keen on that are good for his body. Those health talks are slowly sinking in...
Recipe (if you can call it that ;))
three bananas
1 medium avocado
cacao powder to taste
(You can add soaked dates, or other sweetener to make it sweeter if you or kiddies like)
Also, all volumes are completely pulled out of a hat as it's so simple I just eyeball everything, mess around everyone! It's a great way to get avocado and essential fats into a fussy kid.

Below is a pic I put in the photos thread in the recipe section but thought I'd post it here too as it's a good lunchbox food AND it's nut free.
Raw Chocolate Crackles (nut free)
All volumes are approximate as I'm not big on exact measurements... sorry!
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons of coconut oil
1-2 tablespoons of agave nectar or other sweetener
2 tablespoons of desiccated coconut
1 tablespoon of cacao powder (or more if desired)
1 tablespoon of sprouted dehydrated buckwheat (more can be added)
Pinch of salt dissolved in minimum of water
Method
Melt coconut oil by immersing the bowl in a larger bowl filled with hot water.
Add sweetener and stir, add cacao powder and salt water and stir until thoroughly mixed.
Add coconut and buckwheat and mix completely in.
Place mixture into medium to small paper muffin trays and store in fridge or freezer.

These sound fun! I wonder if the cacao can be substituted with carob. Has anybody else tried subbing in recipes like this? My daughter likes carob and can't eat chocolate because she gets a rash.
PS, she's always liked raw green stuff. I never really did anything to get her like that. Lucky I guess? Maybe we're all like that to start but society bends our tendencies unnaturally away from greens? I don't know....
klomasius

I've found I can ALWAYS substitute carob for cacao in any of the recipes I've tried or made. It does the same job, taste, texture and binding wise, so go for it.
Not sure about the liking of greens as an evolutionary thing though. Greens contain certain unpalatable compounds that take getting used to. I'd imagine if you fed a baby green juice they wouldn't like it very much because of these compounds ;). The greens are trying to stop us eating them, fair enough!
I think you just have a pretty cool gal...
Unbent, I hope you find many healthy raw recipes you grankids like!

Oh that vietnamese roasted banana recipe is absolutely amazing. I am such a huge fan of gliving.tv raw recipes!
Curleedst, I've been working on a bunch of nut free raw cake recipes as there seems to be quite a few people who either are allergic to the nuts or don't want too many.
But many have coconut flakes in them, so I'm not sure they'd be suitable for a child a year or younger.
I think there are some nut free carrot cake recipes here on RFT, just use the banana search button up top and type in 'nut free cake'.
Also, what about an ice cream cake? I demonstrated a triple layer banana ice cream cake to some kids in my son's class last year and they STILL talk about it!
There's a pic below, I've posted it previously here but I'd have to trawl through a gazillion photos to find it. You could have any flavour layers you liked, and decorate the top with all sorts of colourful fresh fruits. Plus banana is easy on the digestion for little ones.
I can give you the recipe if you like, it so simple though. :)
i didn't do cake for my little's bday, i did frozen banana ice cream with chocolate sauce (blended dates with carob or cocoa but the blended dates are enough. it would be great with blueberry or strawberry sauce too).

I didn't do a "cake" either I did a watermelon cake which was a small watermelon with all the peal off and I make a sauce to pour over the top which was blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries blended smooth and put a candle in the middle. I also put cut up banana slices around it on the plate and some fresh blueberries and some kiwi slices, and it was great. My older kids loved it! I sliced it like cake for everyone and cut the babies into pieces. I actually saw the watermelon cake idea on here somewhere about a year ago. Great idea!

Helllloooo . . . .
OK, I have Matthew Kenny's latest (and greatest) new book Everydayraw with the same great photos and recipes as his last book Raw Food Real World but much more simple recipes.
Today I made a few items from the book (all great & easy) and wanted to share with you the ice cream. I am not ususally a lover of raw ice creams because they are usually too something be it hard, soft, coconutty/cashew tasting etc.
I made this one with the kids. We made the chocolate "chips" yesterday to freeze overnight and the custard base today.
The consistency of this recipe is great, light & creamy with no residual coconut/cashew taste AT ALL! I assume this has a lot to do with the peppermint extract which is a very strong flavour.
Note: It did not freeze as firm as conventional dairy but I was expecting this and was prepared to let it firm up in the freezer (add more coconut oil if not firming up). I have a pile of empty qt & pt ice cream containers I get from friends which helps with the whole aesthetic.
Note: I also opted to use basic food coloring; I have used the spinich juice called for in the past but was in a time crunch.
I also opted for making the chocolate pieces from the Cherry Chip recipe instead of the cocoa nibs the recipe called for as I felt the kids would not like them - although I would. I made 1/2 his recipe for the chips. Then used less than 1/2 that for the ice cream! It keeps & freezes well.
Next will be the Cherry Chip - yum!
EPPP
P.S. OK checked this morning and it's now a nice scoopable firm consistancy! So a good 18hr's in the deep freeze!
PPS: Please note this is NOT from the book Vice Cream but from Matthew Kenny's new book Everydayraw. I have recieved several (welcome) mails asking for the vice cream recipes since posting this and I just want to clarify!:p

I get a lot of emails generated by my threads & posts. A query I often recieve is what savory foods do I feed my kids because most of my posts on this thread contain sweets.
The answer is that my kids do not eat savory "recipes". They eat very simply. A plate of greens w/dressing and fruits. Some time a nut yogurt & nuts. Mana bread w/ nut butter etc.
I spent much time and money making savory "recipes" and they just did not like them. They both much prefer simple. But for sweets they do like recipes for cookie, pies ect.
Hope this helps!

Only problem is, he'd put 1/2 a gallon of olive oil if he could get away with it (one time I came down and there was about 1/4 gallon in the bowl, no exaggeration). And olive oil is NOT cheap. So we've had to take to hiding it. Crazy, I know, but I gotta do what I gotta do. He LOVES it though, and I know he needs all the fats he can get, so it's all good!;)

That's really interesting -- because I read about ADHD that it's really important to get enough fat for various reasons related to deficiencies and special needs -- for extra omega fatty acids re: clearing/strenthening the neuropathways . I wonder if that is related to your son's desire for the olive oil? Does he have the same desire for flax seed oil or those rich in omega 3 and 6??
Just curious, but I don't want to veer the conversation to far off from feeding the kids lovely and desirable food!

It's actually my one with autism. When he first went raw, he ate a full recipe of fudge balls everyday, for months and months. Now he can't even stand to hear them mentioned (he does this with foods). Then he was eating a whole bunch of things that didn't have too much fats, and I noticed his behavior changing. It took me a while to catch on, but when I did, I went rampant sneaking flax and hemp oils into his shakes, then he started wanting the salad with olive oil. He feels/acts/behaves/everything better with a high percentage of fats in his diet. So yes, they all help him!:D
mmhmm, me too. curious whether he naturally balances all those omega's 6's with 3's or if you have to work at that. like does he crave nuts and seeds, hemp seeds, flax oil etc? funny, i can give the small girl a capsule of seed oils (bite a hole in the end and she sucks out the juice) which is pretty bitter but i guess her body just knows it's good for her.

RECIPES FOR LIFE: RAW CARAMEL APPLES *****
The first day of fall will begin in just a few days. One of the exciting
foods that are so readily available during the fall season is apples. Many of
our readers may remember going to the County Fair and having a Caramel
Apple. Well, the caramel on those apples was not very healthy but we have
found a healthy alternative. The following recipe for Caramel Apples is
taken from the book “How We All Went Raw” by Charles, Carolanne, and
George Nungesser:
In a food processor, using the S-blade, add:
1 ½ cup of hazelnuts
¾ cups pitted dates
¼ cup raw, unfiltered, honey
2 tablespoons raw carob powder
Process until like a paste. Place apple on a popsicle stick and cover apple with paste.
Variation: Roll apple in coconut after applying paste to apple. ENJOY!

Erg... what's Sunny Delight? Sounds nasty!!
My son is not raw, but I do feed him a lot of raw stuff. It's good to hear that other children seem to like the simpler stuff for savoury as he does. He wont try my savoury raw creations, but he's happy with a plate of carrots, tomatoes, cucumber, snowpeas etc.
The only way I can get mineral rich greens into him though is via green smoothies, except that he does eat broccoli, but only cooked.
Any other raw savoury ideas for kids? I'd really love to hear them!

Hi,
You are not the first to ask this. It took a long time and expense for me to realize my kids just dont like complicated savory dishes. I too get most of my sons greens through his green smoothies and ours are packed with spinach kale chard etc. He drinks about a 1/2 VM container full a day! My daughter is not so into smoothies but does like dipping hard veg wrapped in green into different sauces & dressings. It's simple and for us that's ok. My daughter favorite way to get greens is in her berry sorbet.
Hidden Greens Sorbet
2 fresh not frozen bananas
1-2 cups fzn mixed berries
2T. olive oil
agave to taste
handful spinach
Blend all in VM add 1-2T. hot water to get moving. You will need to use the tamper throught the bending. Another option that I do if making a larger batch is to start it all in a food processor then transfer it to the VM to get it really smooth.
You can also use a "tropical" fzn mix but the lightness of the colours will cause the greens to "show". Store in frezzer and take out about 15 min before serving. I keep an assortment of Haagen Daas & B&J tubs I use to store in. Enjoy!
I would strongly recommend Kate Wood's book Raw Living & her other book Eat Smart Eat Raw. She is British (with several young 100% raw children) and so offers recipes that Americans dont natuarlly think of; just a different approach. My kids love her Roasted Nuts among many others. She has a great website if you cannot get her book here in the US. www.rawliving.co.uk. Her book is not designed as a kids book but offers so much for kids. Her dips are super nutrient packed.

Haha, thanks for that Kissum, I didn't realise EPPP had posted a reply to my post.
Thanks EPPP, helpful as usual! I will look into Kate's book as I'd LOVE to increase his raw food intake. He has been eating green salads lately which is a big thing. He doesn't make faces and refuse them any more and today at lunch he even said 'I like the taste of this type of green leaf mum', I was stunned, I think he is acquiring the taste of greens now after all those smoothies!
My son also does what your daughter does and wraps greens around veg (usually tomatoes) and eats them that way.
I also subject the poor kid to phytoplankton powder (in a small amount of orange juice) for his Omega 3. He's learned to just down it quickly but we had a bugger of a time at the start. It's one way to get some 'green' into him on the busy days.

my children are not 100% raw and i do not want to force them. Luckily they love veggies and fruit a lot. Their top 6 are
-Guacomole with cellery sticks (my son 3y eats that every day)
-Raw Granola from "raw food real world" book with almond milk
-Tomatoe, Avocado, lettuce salad with honey mustard dressing (my daughters favourite)
- Alissa's carrot burgers
- "moster smoothie" (1 young coconut, meat and water, 1 cup frozen mango, some pasley, lots of spinach)
- red beet & apple juice (with a lot of greens sneaked into it)

I just HAD to bring this to your attention. Shazzie has brought out a raw kids book called Evie's Kitchen. Don't think it's avaiable here in the US yet; mine is coming from across the pond. Given how great Shazzie's info is I strongly recommend this one.
http://www.detoxyourworld.com/acatalog/evies_kitchen.html
Please at least have a look at this link; scroll down. She has about 25 stunning colour photos of Evie's favorite foods. I love showing my kids raw food pics at it really gets them interested in trying it!
Years ago I had asked Alissa if she had considered bring out a raw kids book but understandably she didnt feel right doing one given she specializes in raw for adults!
Enjoy,
EPPP
PS: I just wanted to add this from an earlier post in this thread. Kate Wood is Shazzie's best friend:
I would strongly recommend Kate Wood's book Raw Living & her other book Eat Smart Eat Raw. She is British (with several young 100% raw children) and so offers recipes that Americans dont natuarlly think of; just a different approach. My kids love her Roasted Nuts among many others. She has a great website if you cannot get her book here in the US. www.rawliving.co.uk. Her book is not designed as a kids book but offers so much for kids. Her dips are super nutrient packed.

I agree that Eat Smart Eat Raw is an all-around excellent book, and it includes many tips for kids. The British aspect of it does give a different approach. The only downside is the book doesn't use American measurements. Just how much is a teacup or a dessert spoon anyway?
I can't wait for Evie's Kitchen to come out in the U.S. I won't be having any kids for a while, but I want to be prepared to bring them up raw and healthy when the time comes. Plus, I'm still a kid (kind of) and those pictures of the recipes on the website look really yummy to me. Especially the "zebra" -- I love cute looking food!

She never said that children should not be fed raw foods. She said that children shouldn't eat a raw foods diet unsupplemented. From what I've read, Shazzie feeds Evie a raw vegan diet, but also gives her vitamin supplements (vitamin K, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, I think).

Hmm. Do you know where that article is? Unless I'm remembering incorrectly (entirely possible) I remember her saying that children should not be raw b/c it makes people more sensitive and children are already sensitive enough.

Sorry yes the measurements can be a bit confusing to Americans. We are a British-American family so it does not pose a problem for us.
A teacup is about a 6oz cup and a dessertspoon is more like a big Tablespoon.

eachpeachpearplum - MAY I COME AND LIVE WITH YOU? WILL YOU BE MY MOMMY TOO? Your food looks so delicious, so yummy! I still eat very simply raw partically because I am too lazy to make dishes that call for processing or dehydrating. Even when I ate cooked I didn't like to make anything that called for a recipe with a lot of ingredients. Just looking at your dishes is making my mouth water. I wish I could get my kids to eat like that. My precious son is the only one who will touch any of the raw prepared dishes I buy from my favorite raw food store where we live. In fact, sometimes I have to hide things from him because I will got to get something that I have purchased and he will have eaten it all!:D

EPPP what exactly does soaking the oat groats do when you're making the Fig bars? I was wondering if it would make a difference in the recipe if I didn't soak them and just ground them into powder with my coffee grinder? Does soaking them make them super smooth in the recipe? Sorry for all the questions just seems like a long time to soak and I was wondering if it some how makes a difference if you don't soak them? The fig bars look so yummy but unfortunately I don't have any figs right now =(

EPPP, thanks so much for the review of Evie's Kitchen.
I'm aiming to get this as stock for my little market business and am dying to order it (just can't yet as budget wont permit me). Good to hear an experienced raw parent gives it the thumbs up.
Also, have you read Baby Greens by Michaela Lynn? If so can you give me your opinion on that one?
I'd like to get that one in stock, but I'm really wanting some kids books for ideas and helpful tips for my own son.

Hi,
Sorry about the late reply. I always wish we could be notified if someone posts to a thread you have written!
So about the oat groats. The difference is in taste and mouth feel/textures. When you soak them they become so delicious you can eat them as is. My 8yr old daughter loves a bowl of whole 5 day soaked oat groats for breakfast with raisins & cinnamon!
Sorry to digress. So when soaked they become sweet & soft/chewy as if they have been cooked. When they are not soaked they are dull with a floury/grainy in texture like uncooked flour. I know it's a pain but really worth it! I cannot remember how long the soaking time is for the fig newtons but for my daughters oatmeal it's five days!
Is it difficult to find dried figs in your area? If so I am happy to send you a bag :p
Cheers,
EPPP

Yes I do have Michaela Lynn's book. She is actaully an active member here. I know that somewhere on one of my threads in this section I revieved all my kid book I will have to think where.
I will get back to via a personal note. How old is your son?

OK I have had a look and I did mention some of the books in post 103 of this thread. I will still have a look out for others I have.
I have Shazzie's book (and although I don't have a family yet and we are starting IVF) I think it is a great book and I love the recipes for myself. The sandwich bread recipe is so simple and quick and roastly veg are outstanding. I was lucky enough to get my copy as soon as they were published and to get it signed by Shazzie. The pictures are beautiful and this helps so much.

Trying out some new recipes this month. Need to add to our same ol' same ol'!
I made Raw Food Real World's Blue Sunset smoothie. This is a great one because not only is there visual apeal (it has two layers, one blue one yellow) but it is easy and is very filling as it it made with nut mylk.
Yesterday we made Alissa's Apple Current muffins from Living on Live Food. I topped one tray with golden flax and the other with pre-made very crunchy granola.
Both were winnders with the kids and both are VERY easy to make!

you know what is a good idea for kids?
use little tiny cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the fruits and veggies.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1426/1233350657_bd31d1580c_o.jpg
and you can put them together like a cute bento box like take that kiwi flower, and then put a little berry in the middle or cut a melon circle and put it in the middle or make designs out of the shapes, or put it on top of a green soup to make it more appetizing. <3
I see things like this:
http://www.prettysparklekitten.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/bento4.jpg

That is one of the great things with kids is that given the opportunity they will eat intuitively!! Kids are not born thinking they need to have a starch, a protein & a veg followed by dessert!

My 12 month old son is still breast feeding but he just started eating solid food consistently and I've had so much fun introducing him to new foods.
The biggest thing that helped me was teaching him to drink out of straw.
I can get nutrition in him so much quicker than with a spoon! He loves drinking water, carrot and green juices!! I'm careful not to let him drink too much tho, he just takes little sips out of my glass...but after observing him...his body seems to tell him when to stop. I'm amazed!
So far he enjoys:
avocado
raw corn mixed with lightly steamed broc
cherry tomatoes
cucumber
mango
soaked oats with ground flax seed and banana (oatmeal)
cantaloup juice
carrot juice
green juice (kale, chard, romaine, dandelion greens, cucumber, apple)
green smoothies
strawberries
pineapple
blueberries
grapefruit
water
I plan on incorporating almond and coconut milk soon...

I just put the core in the round hole that's supposed to keep the apple (or other fruit or veg) in place while it spins, so it spiralized around it. I don't know if that makes sense :)

This takes about a week to make given all the sprouting and dehydrating. I will follow this up with a recipe. I make this twice sometimes three times a year. Half that gets sent to people. I seem to have aquired 'orders'!

Renee, I signed up. Thanks.
EPPP, Pls send us your recipe! Reminder!
My kids shun every grawnola I make. I even cut the buckwheats WAY back and added cooked oats, and it only slightly helped...like they'd eat a tiny bit. Sheesh.

Renee,
So very nice of you to have the class and to make it available to see later, but one question: Why only a 3-day fast? I mean all the "good stuff" doesn't start happening until day 4 or 5? Just curious!
Thanks again,
Mary Kay

I hate to get off topic on this thread, but since the question is here, I'll put the answer here....
Well, I have to work at my raw kitchen tonight and I need to taste the food I make for Clients. Since digestion begins in the mouth, eating & spitting it out is not an option. If it were for my family, that's one thing. But when I'm being paid to uncook for others, that's another. So, I'm satisfied with this small food break on my days off. I'm looking forward to another mini-fast next time I'm off. :)
