Hello again,

I am looking for a site where I can look up foods high in iron, or other minerals, etc. My mom is highly concerned about me now that I have been prescribed iron pills. She keeps saying that if I'd just eat a little red meat. Now I'm not fully RAW or even close really (I like to say somewhere between 50-75%), but I have really cut back on animal products. Virtually no meat or dairy, and the only slip I've had lately was some cheese.

But I don't want to eat meat. However, I don't know yet what to tell her concerning "where" I'm getting my iron. She is old school, and believes that eggs for breakfast is a great way to up your iron levels.

I am a member on Fitday.com however, I can't seem to find what I'm looking for there. Any help??

Plus I'm curious... for those SAD eaters out there, who consume meat, they appear to have no problems with Iron levels. And this is where I get confused b/c I thought that meats were hard to digest for humans, so how is it that they have good iron levels. Perhaps all the "fortified" prepackaged foods???

Thanks,
Sandra

Sandra, I am reading "The Blending Book"" by Ann Wirmore& Lee Pattinson

"Foods rich in Iron are green leafy vegetables, whole grains, dates, dulse, kelp, peaches, pears, prunes, pumpkins, raisins, soybeans, watercress, and alfalfa".

Your iron levels should improve with the raw diet. My mother who has always been on the SAD diet has had a low iron level all her life. She took iron pills, ate beets, wine, liver but her iron level was always low. I think some people just lack a enzyme needed. Just a theory.

This page is super and I've used it for other minerals too (links can be found to the right on the page). Scroll down and check it out. :)

Thank you both soo much!!

leeleelocs... now that I think about it, my aunt has anemia as well, and she's on a SAD diet. This is how I would expect it. Thanks for the info.

yumyum... that sight is phenominal!! I'll have to show it to my mom when I'm down next... and it should hopefully relieve her worries.

If you don't mind making a purchase, I've just finished reading "Staying Healthy with Nutrition" by Dr. Elson M. Haas, M.D. He is a raw foodist primarily, but also includes a small percentage of cooked vegan foods and fish from time to time. This book contains a vast amount of information and clearly and pointedly provides information on vitamin and mineral sources. It's really a wonderful book. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Anna,

I don't mind purchasing a book, I'll keep it in mind. I've been pondering which book I should purchase (if I do purchase one)... Allisons, or any of the many many others available.

I do really appreciate you letting me know about this book tho... sounds like what I'm looking for. =)

check out www.whfoods.com

use the search feature, and type in any vitamin or mineral
sort through the options
you're looking for something like "food sources of iron" for ex

then it will bring up a list of all the foods with high amounts of iron in them, from most to least

i love this site!

let me know if that doesn't work or wasn't clear haha
