This is for those of you who really miss chocolate milk.

Chocolate Milk
1 cup soaked almonds
4 cups water
1/4 agave or 4 pitted dates
3/4 cup carob powder

In a blender, blend the soaked almonds, water, agave/or pitted dates and carob from 1 to 2 minutes or until thoroughly blended (just don't let it get too hot). Strain the milk through a nut milk bag (or equivalent strainer) for smoothness. You may want to repeat this step until you remove all the silt (personal choice). Rinse the blender out and pour the milk back into the blender and give it a quick blend to mix well. At this time, you can add more agave or pitted dates until you get the desired sweetness.

Ok, now I would like to share with you how I make chocolate milk with really raw carob pods. This is more labor intensive, but I thought I would share with you anyway. Basically, it is the same exact recipe, accept for the fact, you will substitute the 3/4 cup of carob powder with 1/2 pound of whole carob pods.

Ok, to start, you weigh out 1/2 pound of whole carob pods. You then soak them in a ziploc baggy filled with water over night to help soften them up so you can remove the seeds. You can do this dry, but it is much easier if they are soaked. You will remove the apple seed sized carob seeds (I have a picture below showing a carob seed beside a dime for size comparison). Trust me, you don't want these in your blender, these seeds are hard as diamonds. When you are finished seeding them, you will have a pile of broken pod pieces. You will just add this to the blender at the same time you add all the other ingredients. Every other aspect of the recipe is the same.

Note: 3/4 cup of carob powder may seem like a lot, however, I feel it necessary for a rich chocolate flavor.

Tips
- using less water makes the milk creamier, but you get less milk
- adding ice to the blender can turn this into an ice cream shake
- you can use any nuts you want, does not have to be almonds
- just re-blend it to freshin it up if it sits for long
- garnish with a little carob powder sprinkled on top

shelah, you can buy raw carob here => Alissa's Store (http://www.alissacohen.com/carobpowder.html)

I just feel I should not give out a link to a competitor. I wanted to at least acknowledge that I saw your question. I think the carob powder is the way to go anyway. The carob pods are more labor intensive.

.... before going raw I was worried by the fact that i would be missing chocolate BIG time  but not till I discovered carob power....

I only have access to carob powder here no carob pods. This is actually the first time I am seeing it. Is there really a difference in taste?

Thanks muchly ~ a

SamuelWilson: Did your nut milk maker ever arrive? Mine did and I feel SO rediculous. I completely forgot about the electrical conversion. How did you compensate for that? I think I am just going to send mine back (sigh). Very disappointed. I was so looking forward to an easier method of making nut milks. :(

If you prefer, feel free to send a PM.

Thanks.

some equipment can go both ways ;) It might have a switch to change it from American to European. And they also have detachable plugs so that it fits the socket. Or you can go to the store and they have these power boxes I guess *can't remember the name* that you can plug them into. That all kinda a pain tho! But maybe thats helpful to you :)

Anna, go to a hardware store and they should have a converter. I spent a semester in college in Cambridge, England and bought several adapters to use my hair stuff.

Thanks for the recipe, SW. It looks delicious. I like the carob powder sprinkled on top for presentation!

How much will it make?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. The recipe makes around 4 cups of mylk.
There is a difference in flavor when using carob pods as compared to carob powder, however, the difference is minor. I strongly recommend the carob powder over carob pods, unless you just want the ritualistic side of it.
