I just read pansy post: about who's raw in ohio, it's cool when you know who's raw around you. So I was wandering who's raw in Indiana? :)

We're hear and it's nice to know that there are others. It's not nice to feel alone. How are you doing? We went on a trip and I ate a veggie burger, I felt so bad about it but we were traveling and we were so hungry. So sometimes we do good and then sometimes we stumble but all have journeys in our lives.
Talk with you later, tell me where you live.

Ann :D

Hi Ann and Path,
I'm in Schererville and I lived in Indianapolis for several years. My brother is there and my sister lives in Bloomington.

if all you ate was a veggie burger you'll be ok,( unless the burger had something really bad in it  )
did you goto Alanta, Ga? I think i read somewhere that somebody was looking for hookups in Alanta because they were traveling soon?
I live around the grenwood area.

hey Pjries - I too at one time lived in bloomington area.

So, is there any raw food shops or resturants or groups where your both at?

So, is there any raw food shops or resturants or groups where your both at?

Not a lot, Path. One, in St. John, called Organically Delicious has a juice bar and carries organic produce and raw nuts, nut butters, etc. Some of the employees are raw.
Another in Hammond, Healthy Horizons, carries some organic produce and cold-pressed organic oils.

No raw restaurants nearby, but there are a few if you want to drive into Chicago.

There's a place on indy's south side called nature's cupboard - natural health food store with jucie bar and some organic foods and natural foods and natural foods with chemicals, another smaller place is called franklin cornacoupia. small selection of raw honey and dried foods. There's a place called trader's Joe around lafayette square mall area,( I have'nt been there yet). In the summer time there's a farmer's market I goto. There's also a raw honey supplier in greenwood that i've been getting my dark honey from.
Supposely Broadripple is a big vegetarian/ vegan/ art/etc.... area, but I have not checked it out yet to see if there's any rawbies there?
In the kroger's and the marsh and mier stores there a little bit of stuff, ( though you have to be careful and read all ingredients :) ).

In bloomington there is supposed to be a raw potluck dinner on the 4th sunday of each month. I've called the leader of the group but I have'nt recieved any call back?

Haven't been to Nature's Cupboard, but Indy does have a Wild Oats on the North side in the Nora Shopping Center, and there's another Trader Joe's several miles west, on 86th. Trader Joe's is a great place.. tho not strictly raw or even vegan, but definitely worth a trip.

Don't know if there are any raw communities in Broad Ripple, but it wouldn't surprise me. It's a fascinating area - well worth hanging around if you like the atmosphere (which I do/did!)

I lived at 71st and Ditch for the three years I was in Indy - worked on Knollton Road, just off 421 (Michigan Road) around Kessler.

hello Broken :D

I have a friend of mine who lives in jeffersonville area just north of louisville too. Nice to hear from you.

Hey pjries, sounds like you lived around clearwater area?
How did your dogs first handle eaten raw food?
I've have a cat who will only eat this scientific food.

Tell me how do you like web developing?

pjries
02-09-2006, 02:52 PM
Hi Path,
I love Web development! Tons more fun than I ever had in radio, believe me!
Tho I did love radio for a long time.

My dogs transitioned very easily, for the most part. A few minor stomach issues in the first few months.. they go thru detox, too! But now, no problems at all.
And it took awhile to get a completely favorable response. There are still things my guy won't eat.. like turkey necks. But he was eating a really good cooked diet before going raw, so it wasn't as big a transition as it might have been from kibble to raw.

I used to live an hour south of Indy- belonged to the Bloomingfoods co-op and LOVED it! We just moved (last week) to Kokomo. There aren't any places to shop comparable to the co-op, but the Wild Oats in Carmel isn't too far away for the occasional "stocking up."

hey pjries, What took you down the path of web pages?

Hello lane :)

I think I've heard of the bloomington coop? Do you have any more info on it?
Did you ever attend the raw potluck dinner's. Supposely that group mets on the last sunday of each month?
do you know of anybody else from there that's raw?

Does Kentuckiana count? *lol* I'm in Bardstown, KY but I work in Louisville and until recently worked in New Albany Indiana. If your in southern Indiana I know there are a few co-ops in Louisville, might be worth the drive. I'm in the process of looking into one myself.

Hi PATH301!
I think Bloomingfoods has a website, I have their last newsletter somewhere- most of our things are still boxed up from the move- so I'll look for it as we unpack. I never attended the potlucks- didn't find out about them until now, but there are quite a few folks who eat mostly raw food at the co-op. The store has a great selection of produce, a juice bar, bulk nuts and seeds, and carries rejuvenative brand foods. Are you near Bloomington? Once we get settled in, I wouldn't mind trying to start a raw potluck once a month or so here in Kokomo.

hi jinxiekat :)

Glad to see drop some lines for us. How's your raw journey going?

Hello lane,
I'm about 50 min to bloomington, plus I used to live there awhile back and loved it :)
If you hop on to 26 and head west your about an 45min from purdue town, they're has to be some type of action going on over there ie, farmers market and health food stores, might have to do some hunting to find out.
Nature's cupboard health food store here has dry bulk foods - organic and natural, weight lifting items, tons of vitamins, personal products, organic foods, organic/kosher meats,organic/ dairy products cage free animal products
here's a web link for it:
www.naturescupboardsuperstore.com. :)

Yep, she's an English Cocker Spaniel; our baby. She's a really neat little dog. You have a good eye! Most people ask if she's a Springer pup (she's going to be five years old this year, so that picture is quite old!) I would love to feed her raw, but DH won't hear of it. She was born profoundly deaf and has an immune system disorder. We have to give her a chemotherapy drug several times a week to suppress her immune system. :( So I would love to see if feeding her fresh foods would help in any way. Did your dogs have improved health as a result of eating raw?

pjries

Path, I got into Web work as a second career and I love it.

Broken, there are amazing things going on in the dog world in terms of nutrition, holistic care, and re-evaluating vaccinations and protocols.
Yes, I can definitely say that feeding raw improves their health. And dog food manufacturers are making it a lot easier these days-so many really good companies out there now if you don't want to grind your own food or toss the dogs the bones.

Broken,
Feeding your little cutie raw food would be soooo great for her! I take in FIV cats from the shelter and putting them on - even only a partially raw diet- has affected their health profoundly! No more skin irritatons, abscesses, all of their weights have stabalized, coats are beautiful!!! After my first (and only one to yet) feline friend died, I knew there had to be a way out of this for them (as most wild cats exist with the virus just fine) and I have no doubt that a biologically appropriate diet is and has always been the answer.....for us all!

Hello All,

I'm not from Indiana, but my parents live there. I just gave my mom Alissa's book for Christmas and she has been working on incorporating juices/healthier foods into her diet.

Does anybody know where she could get a good deal on organic/healthy groceries? My folks have only lived in the area for a year and don't know what's out there.

Thanks for any help.

Just realized that I didn't say where she lives. My parents live in Goshen and my Mom works in South Bend.

Prana,
Lucky parents- Goshen is a unique area...AND there is a co-op right in town-- I've only been there briefly once while visiting a friend- and didn't get a good look at their produce section, but my guess is that it's adequate. Also, there is a co-op farmer's market (Mill Race, I believe??) that I hear is amaaazing! I'm planning on making a trip up there to check it out this summer.

Does anyone have any good resources? I'll google it, but wanted to know if there was any reading or food sources you have found to be of good quality.

Thanks!

02-13-2006, 08:50 AM
There are several good books on preparing raw meals for companion animals, my two favorites are :"The Complete Guide to Natural Animal Care" (or something very similar- can't remember the exact title) by Dr. Pitcairn, and "Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats" by Kymythy Schultze-- this one is short and to the point. Pre-packaged food can be a great option too- if you don't mind ordering, or talking a local food store into ordering-- favorites include wysong, amore pet foods, aunt jeni, or grandads-- all have websites and all except wysong use organic meat.

02-13-2006, 10:19 AM
Broken, other sources are Nature's Variety, Bravo, Primal and Northwest Naturals for commercially prepared foods. Each has different meats and vegetables and I'm finding that what works best for us is to feed a variety of meats and a variety of brands each week, like Aunt Jeni's Goat on Monday, Nature's Variety Turkey on Tuesday, Northwest Naturals Beef on Wednesday and Primal's Duck on Thursday.. etc. That way they get all their nutritional needs met.

One of the best and most informative sites I've found - really helped me when we made the transition - was this one: http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html put together by Mary Straus. She does a great job of just laying out information for you.

There are a lot of books out there, but I wouldn't recommend Pitcairn for feeding raw, lane. That book includes a lot of cooked information unless there's a new edition.

Kymythy's book is good, but nothing beats a supportive Vet, Broken, tho it may be hard to find in your area, especially since you are just north of the home of Purina!

You may want to consider joining a raw feeding group on Yahoo to help get you started and answer your questions.
I'm a member of the CockersNaturalDiet group ( http://www.geocities.com/cockersnaturaldiet/ )
and all Cocker Spaniel owners are welcome! Some have English, some American, some are breeders, some just Cocker Spaniel lovers. But you can get your questions answered quickly there.
Hope that helps!

I agree, Dr. Pitcairn's recipes are not completely raw, but with a few modifications, they can be- or come close-- either way, they are better than processed kibble food.

Broken, I forgot to mention that there are freeze dried raw meat alternatives for transitioning if it turns out you have a picky eater-- believe it or not, some animals shun fresh raw meat after being on a kibble diet for a long while.

That's true, lane.. The Honest Kitchen is a freeze-dried alternative that many people like. And Nature's Variety now makes a grain-free kibble called Raw Instinct. The key for Cockers (and maybe most dogs) is to stop feeding grains of any kind. That's made a huge difference in the ear wax production for my guy.

And a cooked diet isn't the worst thing in the world for dogs.. Monica Segal wrote a book nutrition and runs a list called K9Nutrition
http://www.monicasegal.com/aboutus/discussions.php
where she analyzes diets.

Broken, may be TMI! <grin> but there really is a lot of support out there for you!

Thanks you guys for taking the time to give me all of that information. When she was about a year we almost lost her because of her immune system problem. Since then, we give her medication regularly, and then when she has a flare-up we have to give her prednisone, which makes both her miserable and us miserable. We don't have any children, and she is for sure our baby. I've always felt that there had to be an answer to her immune system problem, and this could be it.

I will definitely check out the Cocker group. I've had an American Cocker and I've had an English...one thing's for sure, I love them all!

BTW, Bella was born profoundly deaf as I mentioned earlier. Is it true that most breeders put down deaf dogs? That's what our breeder told us, and I just can't imagine...Bella knows a lot of signs and never barks when the neighborhood dogs do! Really a neat little dog, and it seems a shame that a puppy could be put down due to deafness.

I concur with you it's just a little nippy outside right now
What kind of raw foods can you mock that's resembles smores on the fire?
There's a lake just to the east of Kokomo, not sure what it's called, but it may be a place where to check out? See if it would hold an Hoosier potluck shindig - with a bonfire? :)

i don't have a map around and am not yet familiar with the area, but i think you might be talking about the mississenewa and salamonie reservoirs-- i'll have to check them out...good idea for those folks who might travel a ways and would like to make a weekend of it- camping, hiking, etc..(though i shouldn't assume that everyone is as "into" the outdoors as i am :) )

...as for the smores- i don't know if flax crackers with cashew cream and cocoa nibs would do justice, but that's all my mind is coming up with :)

The lake that i saw is from an old map. It shows a lake just south of the airport. But on the new state Indiana map it's not there - it may be a non state advertised lake? There's a little town called vermont that is on the north side of this lake. And state road 22 is on the south side of it.

Nice to have you with us :)
How long have you been on your raw journey?
What's your major?
I 've bee told there's supposed to be an international market somewhere around the north side of lafayette square mall area?
Also you might pop over to broad ripple and check out the scene over there, I've been told there's some vegan stores over there as well. There's a meijer's right off 38th st. and I think it's called parkway something? it's right there in that area if your on 38th st. heading west toward 465. They usually have abetter selection than walmart does, they also have area's in their produce that's some organic items. And an asle that has organic stuff. I've been to the one in camby, In just like 15 min, south on 67 from indy s.w. side.
The more mixed cultures, the better the selections :D

My major is informatics, everyone aways asks me immediately what informatics is, so here is a link with a brief discription (click here) (http://informatics.iupui.edu/overview/what_is_informatics.php) . I love going down to the broad ripple area, i should go and check out some of the restaurants down there too. I'll also try and do an internet search for that international market by of lafayette square it sounds interesting. Thanks for the ideas :)

trader joes is nice, but not nearly as big as wild oats. They have some interesting foods but i don' t think they have as many fruits and veggies. i think they have the same stuff and more at wildoats. Hi all, I just stumbled into this thread, and thought I'd check in.

I was born and raised in Ft. Wayne, though I left at 20 and never looked back. My late sister and her hubby lived in Indy, and my mom now lives in Bloomington, where my brother and his wife have lived for 20 years or so. I was there for a week at Thanksgiving, and loved poking around the IU campus again, visiting the IU Art Museum, listening to The Tuba Santas.

Although I have lived many places and traveled the world, I do still have a very soft spot in my heart for Indiana. It's a wonderful wonderful place.

I just wouldn't want to live there. :)

I used to live in bloomington - it's a great town to live. I lived by the campus area the community life around bloomington is pretty open minded which I like, there's always something going on down on kirkwood, you can walk to just about anything - can always find music any where all different types. plus the variety of cultures, I just love it. And going free climbing down in the rock quarries and jumping off 50 to 100' drops was always a rush. And with all the lakes around there and hills and woods, I could always find fun things to do for cardio workouts. :)
