View Full Version : How do you store your nuts?

What do you store your nuts in? I'm wanting to really get the raw part of my kitchen organized. I feed 4 SAD members of the family and I am the only raw-high raw person in the family and really want to get that section of my kitchen looking good!
Do you keep your nuts on the counter or put away in the pantry?

Thanks

Pam

LOL@ Pam

Mine are and have always been stored in wide-mouth Mason Jars and those are in the cabinet. But when I have an abudance of them, I store the overflow in ziploc bags and those are all stored in my oven since we don't use it :p

I also keep my grains and made flax crackers in the oven as well. Please don't ask for a picture of that 'cause it's kinda in a disarray right now...need to organize it again!

LOL @ Rawk! :)
Oh, I am so glad to see that I am NOT the only one that uses the oven as a storage unit!
I don't use the oven on a daily basis, so stuff gets stored in there! What better use could you get from the oven anyways! :)
Oh, won't ask for a picture, unless you get it organized and wanna share! ;)
Ugh, that's so simple a wide-mouth mason jar! What a good idea! Yes, I think I have an abundance of nuts, I just bought 7 cups of walnuts for some recipes.
Thanks for that idea!

Me again; I store in glass jars. Oily nut like Macadamia & pine nuts I store in the fridge in an AIR TIGHT container - glass.

Hey notice on the bottom right shelf - those are the bunched up green veggie storage bags I mentioned in your other thread!

I have some new really big jars for large amounts of nuts, I will send you a pic.

How do you sture your nuts? Be a little more careful with the spelling next time. I was thinking, how personal can you get?

eachpeachpearplum, I like how you have everything organized, it looks very clean. I use those green bags also, they really help.

I store my nuts and seeds in half gallon mason jars that I vacuum seal with my FoodSaver and the wide-mouth jar sealer.

I knew it Samuel---I imagined your nut jars labeled!!!! Do you won a label machine too?

Can I ask what you use to soake your nuts and seeds? :)

Alright, I have had it! Eeenough about sturing nuts, how to soake nuts, whose nuts are these, yada yada yada

As much as I would like to go to my personal library and grab a few volumes of the manly manual and start quoting verses, I will not. I will maintain my composure.

misslinda, yes, I own a label machine and when I am not putting labels on my jars, I like iron my towels :(

Most the time, if I am soaking nuts for a recipe or to make nut mylk, I just soak them in a sealable bag. It takes up less room in the refrigerator this way and seems to get the job done. It doesn't always have to be elaborate.

misslinda, I prefer to use my ironed towels ;)

I don't have those little garbage cans behind the seat. As a raw vegan, I don't buy sodas and snacks, so I don't have a lot of those SAD cans and wrappers.

Mine, when I have any are in glass jars. I also soak in glass jars. I usually do have seeds and they are in jars. Any overflow stays in the bag from the store and goes in the freezer.

Rawkie, didn't you sell the stove? Or was that .. it was before you moved wasn't it? We never did get to see a pic of what your hubby built in it's place. Wow, the brain is working again momentarily. He built you something to keep your jars in, wasn't it?

Samuel, I used to have labeled jars, shelves, and dresser drawers when I was younger, and have heard of ironing towels. That was a long time ago too. Actually I monogramed my daughter's cloth diapers. Now that goes way back. She is 3 months younger than Misslinda.

Doe, yeah that was before we moved. He built me a system to keep all my appliances on and to do food prep since the kitchen had very limited countertop space.

Sorry I never took a picture of it.

As I am sitting here LOL ing at all these replies it reminded me of a story.

I'll never forget, summer 1990, we had opened our first boutique, Denny & I were working and a family came in & he was eating a bag of nuts....saying how much he enjoyed them & how much fun he was having & as he was leaving.....keep in mind...we were putting in 14 hour days-7 days a week...kinda loopy...I said " Have Fun with your Nuts." both Denny & I immediately started laughing, hysterically...& to this day he never lets me forget. I am laughing hysterically just printing this out... :D :D :D

Enjoy,

Samuel, Oh, thanks for pointing out my spelling error. I've had a few of those these this week and don't realize it until way later.

Thank goodness it's fixed now in the title. And I guess I shouldn't ask on the forum, but "sture" isn't even a word is it?

I need to really start reading over my threads before hitting submit.

eppp, yes I like the way it's all organized as well! Gotta look for those green bags!

vegggeeemom, no worries, spelling is not important here. What is important is that we stay raw and prosper on our raw food journey.

I know I have mentioned it before, but I really like my half gallon jars. I needed the bigger jars because I have big nuts. Ok, I worded that wrong. I needed the bigger jars because I have a large quantity of nuts :)

Walmart had such a good deal on walnuts (or at least for around here) a couple of weeks ago, that I bought A BUNCH. They were 2.75 for 12 oz, with May as the exp. date. I also bought a food saver, which I have wanted for some time now. It says nuts can be stored this way for up to 2 years. I hope they retain their nutrition also! Anyway, I decided to try this, as they may go rancid before I could use this many, so I figure I have nothing to lose. I think I bought 20 packages!

We only have one store that sells raw cashews and they were out. Yes, I know they are not truly raw, but it's what I can afford, and I make a lot of dips and dressings with them. I also use them in place of macademians in most of my recipes due to expense. I checked out http://www.naturalgrocers.com/200176.html and they have 15.5 oz cashews for $3.15. They are pieces, not whole, but that's ok. So I ordered 5 lbs and hopefully they will be good. Someone on this board gave Natural Grocers and good write up, so I thought I'd give them a shot.

I store my nuts in those square glass jars in the "fridge" like the ones Alissa used in her DVD. It's nice, as they all fit side-by-side. they look nice too.

Any spare nuts that I cannot fit, I keep bagged in plastic & in the freezer.Small amounts go in the cupboard in small jars or plastic bags. I hope to someday have jars for everything, as I love the look & the ease of cleaning. :)

I got the jars at Walmart.

Samuel, Is there a reason you Vacuum seal the nuts? Just curious ?

Hey Pam (vegggeeemom),

That food saver attatchment that SamuelWilson uses for the Mason jars is AWESOME!!!! I have those also, one in each size, and they work great! I think it is a great "toy" for raw fooders to have. (I know, I know, it is not "necessary", but its nice and helps a lot!)

Linens & Things & Bed Bath & Beyond have a great "cheap" selection of jars also! And if you are in the WA. area Fred Meyer is having a sale this week on their jars.

Lana, it is not necessary to vacuum seal your nuts. That would be a personal choice, very personal.

Actually, I am glad you brought that up because it gives me an opportunity to share with everyone about kitchen gadgets in general. I know we all read lots of threads regarding devices. You do not need all these devices. These things are only meant to make our life easier. I really do like sharing with everyone of you, all the things I come across. I do hope that I don't make people feel they have to have all these things. I want my threads to be an encouragement.

To answer your question regarding vacuum sealing the mason jars, I do it because I feel it can extend the shelf life of the nuts, seeds, dried spices, etc.. However, I found out that it does not preserve the life of fresh produce. That is why I bought the FreshSaver containers which are not vacuum sealed.

If you don't have a vacuum sealer, I wouldn't worry about it. You can definitely do without it.

Samuel, thanks so much for sharing all your gadgets. I know we don't need them, but it sure is nice to find out things that help w/food prep, etc.

I recieved my mango peeler & it is fantastic.thanks for the link... My Vitamix 5000 will be here on Wed. It's nice to read everyone's opinion on gadgets, tools, even the food/supplements, etc- if you search the net on Raw-there is a lot of things being promoted that I'm not sure are necessary. I'm learning to listen to my own body.

Thanks for spending time sharing w/us. We esp. like the humor...as well :D :D :D

Hi guys.................kind of off the subject of jars but.........

If you have more nuts than can be used in a short period, the excess nuts should be stored in the freezer. Since nuts are oily, they can become rancid easlily. I buy large quanities, fill my mason jars and put the excess in my freezer. Sometimes, when I'm not using them very quickly, I move the mason jars to the refrigrator.

SamuelWilson
02-06-2006, 03:56 AM
Smoothie, thanks for the information.

I choose not to freeze any excess nuts at this time because freezing nuts destroys Vitamin E.

By storing nuts in vacuum sealed glass jars, I am preventing/delaying the rancidity in the nuts by retarding the process of oxidation.

Samuel, yes you are a very valued member on this forum! I look forward to your recipe inventions and your sense of humor keeps the boards hopping! :)
I have several ing. now for some of the recipes you have invented or have posted pictures of. I have searched for just your posts before to get recipe ideas! I've also pointed many people your way for ideas on what to make!

EPPP, Oh, sale? I'm going to check out Fred Meyer then after my appointment!

Ziploc bags are good too if funds are limited. I always end up just leaving them in the bag that I bought them with the little tie thing. I normally don't buy more nuts then I need though, so storing hasn't been an issue. I just wanted to see how everyone organizes their stuff and when I can buy alot of nuts, I want to be prepared for storage!

Rambling again! :)

Thanks for the ideas and for the laughs!! :)

Does refridgeration cause the same thing Samuel? I currently store mine in the fridge per the package recomendations. I hope I didn't alter them, gah. All the things I have always done out of habit not knowing what I was doing. Knowledge is a wonderful thing!

Just put them in cages... ok, maybe not the younger two since they're SO cute. But definately cage the older two! ;) It might help u out a little. You might even want to put one in a sound proof cage... or maybe both... You decide... :P Hope this helps. ;)

Depends on how they are packaged to begin with. The ones I get at the health food store are packed in thick plastic zip top bags. No need to repackage those. If I buy a small quantity of bulk nuts and know I will be eating them soon, I just leave them in the bag they are in. Sometimes I put them in large mason jars. I have mason jars lined up at the back of the counter with assorted things in them such as popcorn and dried beans. And no, I don't eat those things raw although I have read that you can sprout popcorn. I can't imagine how it would taste though.

I store my nuts in the fridge because I heard that they will go rancid if you keep them for that long. I usually buy large quantities so I need to keep them fresh as long as possible.

I store mine in double zip lock bags in the house freezer, if I have more than 3 or 4 pounds, the rest goes out in the big freezer in the garage, these would be cashews, pine nuts, walnuts, almonds, pecans, brazil nuts and hazelnuts

We have almond and hazelnut trees
