I really like my half gallon jars, I can hold 2 pounds of dried nuts in them. With my FoodSaver wide-mouth jar sealer, I can vacuum seal them.

I saw these screened lids that can turn my half gallon jars into sprouters. I know I can make my own lids out of cheese cloth, but I thought these were pretty neat.

I LOVE jars for storage. I just bought a couple of cases of 750 ml, 1 L and 2 L jars. They are about $10 if you buy them in a regular store, just just a dollar or two each (really) if you buy them from a packing supply company. As long as you buy by the box they will sell to you. Just search for glass packing supplies.
We used it as a way to get the plastic out of our cupboards, and keep the bugs out! We were having a problem with moths for a while...
Cheers,
Sheryl

Lady Green Jeans, thanks for your inquiry. I purchased the half gallon mason jars from Home & Beyond (http://www.homeandbeyond.com/prod-0002758.html) and you can buy the screen lids from Sproutpeople (http://www.sproutpeople.com/devices/jar/jar.html).

I've used those screened lids on Mason canning jars before and they work great. Really easy to rinse and drain what ever it is that you are sprouting too. I think you'll really like them!

Cool jars and screens, Samuel... But I expected to see lots of firehouse cashews in there all ready to be snacked on... :D

Yes, this is exactly my goal as well, to get rid of all those nasty plastic containers... Ick.

Samuel, help me out here, I'm a little confused about the vacuum sealing of the jars. I have a tube thingee with my foodsaver, but how do you do it with the mason jar lids?

You buy the wide-mouth jar sealer or standard jar sealer. This sealer fits over the jar top with the rubber gasket cap in place and the threaded ring off. You vacuum seal it and then you thread the ring on.

Hi Samuel,
A few questions about these jars.
Do the lids that fit the smaller jars ( I guess quart size mason jars?)-fit the top of these larger ones?
How do these jars (the lid part) do with liquids in them-i.e. juices? Do they seal well-do they rust?
Do you know of any other lids to seal liquids better in these jars?
thank you for you help.

sweepea32, you brought up some very good points and it will give me a chance to clear up any confusion.
Ok, in the above picture, the white plastic contraption you see on top of that jar is the jar sealer, it is not a universal cap (meaning, it is only there to vacuum seal the jar, after you are done vacuum sealing, you pull the white plastic cap off to seal another jar, etc.).
The FoodSaver Jar Sealer comes in 2 sizes, either standard or wide-mouth. Sounds like to me, you have standard jar tops, so you would need to order the standard jar sealer. You can not see in the pic, but the jar has that round metal flat cap with the rubber gasket in place under the FoodSaver Jar Sealer.
You asked me how the jars do with liquids. Once again, the thing you see that you may think is a lid is actually the FoodSaver Jar Sealer and it is only in place to vacuum seal the jar. It will still be the flat metal cap with the rubber gasket that is the lid. It works great with liquids.
A little interesting fact, before they had refrigerators, people would put milk in mason jars with the cap on and put them in the water at the mouth of a spring where the water stayed a constant cold temperature, even during the summer.
You also ask me if I knew any other lids to seal liquids better in these jars. It is still the same flat metal lid with a rubber gasket that it has always been. It will be fine for any liquids.
