Hi Everyone, If you are like me & live where you cannot get the baby young white coconuts, I have an idea. It's a listing of all the "Asian Markets" in the US State by State.

My idea, is have the grocery store ship to you. If they will not, maybe a friend or relative will.

I got a food co-op to order me some-but at the price of $33.50 for 9. Plus, I have to drive 45 minutes one way to pick them up. From what I have heard, these coconuts sell for .99 to $1.27. Now believe me, I am very non-frugal (which is a fault of mine) but it is hard to swallow the 3 coconuts for $26 plus shipping price I have seen on the net.

This is a staple in the Raw lifestyle-I haven't had one yet , (tasted the water-yum) & I know this is a great business opportunity if someone wants to start a Coconut shipping service. Just an idea.

Lana

I feel the same way about having to get raw nuts and dates shipped into alabama.
they are costly. I get my young coconuts at Wal Mart for under $2.00here in alabama because the Asian markets charge more and they are the same brand...go figure. Maybe we can do a swap where do you live?

Leeleeloce, You read my mind ! They sell the coconuts at Walmart. Wow-are you lucky...I live in northern Michigan- The "tip of the mitt" it is called. I'm in a resort town-closed for the Winter-so I have to drive for eveything.

I think I may have solved my coconut problem, but swapping w/other Raw fooders for items etc. is a great idea. Probably put items in events/foods/classified section of the site. We'll have to ask...
thanks, :p

I finally got home w/my case of special ordered coconuts. got it open enough to drink the water & it tastes /smells fine....but the meat is not pure white like on photos I have seen. It is white w/some sort of light lavender. I've enclosed a photo.

Did I get old coconuts-as I payed $33 for this case. Please help. Thanks,
Lana

Ps. Enclosed is a photo of me w/my first coconut relaxing by the snow... :p

When they are very young they have a purple colour. If the flesh is very thin and tastes okay it's probably fine. If it has an off taste throw it out. I've seen lots of posts over the last few years saying purple was automatically bad, but coconut growers here say differently. When I've bought them in the US only a small % are purple, and they tasted fine.

Cheers,
Sheryl

Honestly, it looks spoiled. However, if you drank it and it tasted ok, then more power to you.

I like them to be bleach white myself.

Thanks for the replies...the flesh is very thin, but it tastes fine. There was not a lot of meat-but about 2 cups of the water. I have called the distributer "Freida's" from CA. They have no idea & said to check w/their web-site. Very frustrating.... :(

You'll probably find that most of them are older with thicker white flesh. The softer ones are good for dressings and smoothies, the thciker for desserts and just eating straight. Those are our favourite ways to use them. We've been getting local Australian coconut, they are not as sweet as Thai but are fresh from wild trees!

Boy are these coconuts driving me crazy. "Freida's" just called & said that the insides should be white...not the color mine are. I had a feeling they were bad, that is why I only tasted the water & meat.

OK, So here is the GOOD news....(when life turns into lemons/make lemonade)-while talking to the nice rep-I asked where I can get them...
they sell to Wal-mart & if you ask the Produce Manager they can special order. This is such great news for me & I know that others were also looking for these coconuts.

Well, just thought I would pass this along. :o

I've eaten these coconuts for 30 years! They OFTEN look violet when you open them. Nothing at all wrong with it.. EAT IT! :) unless it smells funny. But if there's no mold, and if it's unopened, it should be fine.

Thanks for the advice Rowan, but it really looked too gross for me to handle. :( I called the company & they said I should get a credit -esp since there was hardly any meat. also, a few sips & both mine & my husband's stomach could feel that it just wasn't right.
thanks for the info...

Hahaha! I've been eating these young coconuts for 30 years! They OFTEN have a violet cast to the meat when they're young. As long as it isn't moldy and doesn't have any holes in it, and as long as it smells good, I'd EAT IT! I do it all the time!

I'm sure it's that some purple young ones are bad, and some aren't. The younger the coconut the faster it goes off. Young ones here last a couple of weeks fresh, mature ones last months. Probably becasue it's more mature and ready to remain dormant for a while before growing!

Lucky you RowanC! 30 years of coconut! WOW!

Somehow that reply got posted twice. I'm not too good at this, I guess.

Anyway... I think that sometimes the coconuts get dropped and they sort of "bruise" like a banana would - the meat begins to turn that purple color. I eat them, but I understand why you wouldn't want to. :) Sorry about the multiple posts... maybe someone can delete one. lol

The guy we buy ours from won't sell them if they are dropped. Now that's a dedication to quality!

Hi Lana,

Coming from Asia, I have seen plenty of purple-colored coconut meat. Mostly are good. It just so happens they are sometimes like that, just like some beings are more covered with moles than others (is that a good comparison!!?)?

By the looks of it, your coconut meat seems to be 'extra' young. That is why there is not much liquid and meat yet. I figured the purple-coloring is due to meat 'forming'. So it is fine. As long as it does not taste off.

Here's to more wonderful sweet coconut juice and meat - CHEERS!! ;)

PS for RowanC - I have had 31 years of coconut experience and still counting!! :p

Aisah...How great that you have been able to eat/drink these wonderful coconuts...It may be time for me to head to tropics for a few years of coconut picking...LOL

OK...So I am obsessed w/getting these coconuts and at a regular price & weekly shipments...so here is the latest & I really hope it helps others...

Freida's-a major supplier for Walmart produce -does deliver them to many Walmarts -but not all. It takes dealing w/ produce mgrs. & even store managers, but I think it is possible to have them special ordered. I'll keep you all posted. The upc # is 3784204145...it also has a small 0 at the front of the upc & a little 8 at the end of the upc-(we are not sure if those #'s are part of the upc #.)

Be prepared-Walmart will probably tell you, like they did me, "we don't have a ditribution center #" for which I replied..."I own a business & I know you can get one." Just be nice but determined & we can get these coconuts that we need & want. :o

Yes the purple color means they are very young, not spoiled,
from my own experience, and from what I have read ("Raw Food Real World").
I only happen apon a lavender ones occassionally. I prefer the white ones,
but have eaten the laveder ones too as long as it smells ok.
I blended it into a smoothie to make it more appetizing.
Glad your other one was white and more to your liking.

Thanks Punky, I just could not get past the color & the flavor seemed a little "off".

At a seminar by Tanya Zavasta she said that if the milk is not a yellowy/clear color but a pink color that you should throw it out. I don't know if that's the same with the color of the meat.

This isn't a raw site, but I searched for information on google and this is what came up.
