View Full Version : "And you're still walking around?!"

I was happy to see the question on "where am I getting my calcium"? Because I too have a mother concerned about me being on this diet. She just got back from a trip to one of my sister's house, and asked "So, are you still doing the raw vegan thing?" I said "yes". And she said "And you're still walking around, how about that?!" I asked what THAT was supposed to mean. And she said she just didn't understand where I'm getting my protein from, and doesn't like the idea of me not eating dairy (for the calcium). After the calcium question, I can now bring her a list of calcium sources I'm eating. BUT, I need some info on protein that I can give her. I told her that spinach is VERY high in protein, and that it has more than chicken, and she said "Yeah, but how MUCH of it do you have to EAT, to get that much protein?" And I couldn't answer that. I have to eat breakfast with them tomorrow morning, and it would be nice if I could come armed with some good info for her. ANYONE??? :)
Thank you!!

Go to the "Need to know more about raw?" forum and read the article on Protein that Alissa posted there. That will give you some answers.

I was getting the same questions from my brother the last time he came for a visit. So I printed the article that Rawkinlocs mentioned in her post about protein and calcium and gave it to him to read. It was easier for me than to feel like I had to defend myself and this lifestyle to a SAD eater! He read it and that put a stop to his questions.

Karen,
You took the words out of my mouth! I loved that list that was given on calcium and just sent it to my parents who are worried about my dd. But next on my list was protein.
Hang in there with your family. Sometimes they have to SEE it to believe it. Don't fall for the bait they set out either. I like that you just handed your bro. a list. Sometimes I get tired of defending so just pull out the lit, too.
Hope breakfast goes well tomorrow!

I've decided, as much as possible, to quit telling people about my diet.

I agree with Tim, I also never bring up the fact that i'm on a raw diet. The lady I eat lunch with ask me how come I started eating salads every day and I told here I was trying to add more greens to my diet. She was happy with that answer and I way happy I didn't have to lie. ;)
Tracey keep up the good work. Wish I was that lucky but I know if I keep at it the weight will finally come off.

I also try not to talk about my diet (or try to convince people), especially over meals. It puts tons of pressure on me and I'd rather enjoy the company.
Keep in mind that just because they ask you about any given topic, you don't have to talk about that. I say "I'd rather not talk about it over food, but if you have questions, feel free to send me an e-mail or call me and I'll send you some info."

:D
Karen, Victoria Boutenko has a great chart in her new book -- several great charts, actually - that show the protein content in various greens. The cool thing is that it is ALL usable protein whereas protein from meat and dairy isn't all usable -- in fact, the body uses very little of it. So there, mom!!

My mother is always getting on my case about protein and I tell her that although meat has a large quantity of protein, it's not quality protein. but she just rolls her eyes at me. oh well, maybe someday she'll understand
