Can anyone give me the recipe for Kale chips. And do they really taste like potato chips? Thanks

leeleelocs,

I've seen referrence to this once or twice and all I can recall (and what I personally did) was: (sorry no exact measurements)

Wash and cut up some kale
marinate in a little olive oil and Nama Shoyu (or celtic salt and olive oil if you don't use NS)
lay on the dehydrator tray (the mesh, no teflex, etc.)
Dry until crispy/crunchy

They were pretty good...but too salty due to leaving them in the Nama Shoyu for too long. So, maybe just mix it up a bit with your hands and allow to sit for 15-20 minutes may be long enough (I think I did overnight before)

You could also sprinkle any seasonings on that you desire such as garlic, onion or chili powder...cayenne, etc.

I wouldn't say they taste like potato chips, but they do have a very nice crunch and the flavor will be whatever you make it by what you put on them before dehydrating.

Try it out with a leaf or two, not too much, just to see how you like it and if they're a go, make more! :)

OR...if you have Alissa's book, follow the recipe for her marinated kale but dehydrate it until crunchy! Hadn't thought of that before now.

Thanks so much for posting this recipe. The chips have satisfied my craving for potato chips! They are SO Good!

I decreased the salt to just less than a teaspoon though. I've used both curly and dinosaur kale -- I they are both good. The curly chips kind of melt in your mouth ... the dino chips are a bit more sturdy.
I'm making a big batch to tide me through super bowl!!
I'm going to expand and see how mustard and collard greens work as well ...

I bought organic kale yesterday and did not make my salad with it... I am going to go make this now... sounds YUMMY and I have the munchies! :)

Okay.... I made this today and while it would be good.... it is entirely WAY too salty. I did it according to the recipe listed above. I am not sure what I will do with all this krispy kale, but I don't want to waste it.

I will definetely make this again, but WAY less salt! ;)

That's what happened to me...I didn't use a recipe but it turned out very salty!

Maybe you could crumble it up on salads as a topping.

Rawadventures,

Maybe you could crunch it up and put it on a salad. :)

Hmm... two replies with the same suggestion. I reckon I must make me a salad today! I am thinking too that this would make a great "salt" for things. For example... instead of using salt in something, just crumble up the kale. I am going to remake it for sure though cuz it makes a great munchie snack... just WAY less salt. I am thinking 1 tsp instead of TBSP. Anyway.... it IS surprisingly good and cruchy! :)

I original batch using 2 Tbl of salt came out waaaaay too salty too. I put some in other things, but most ended up in the compost pile.

I think there may be a misprint on the original recipe that is listed. I have reduced the salt to 1 tsp, and make sure I mix up the oil/vinegar/salt prior to cleaning and cutting up the kale so the salt has plenty of time to dissolve.
I then mix the oil/vinegar/salt mixture really well, and make sure I knead it into all the leaves. I found when I use two bunches of kale with the measurements of oil/vinegar/salt, it seems less salty (only 1 tsp of salt).

I made two batches last night, so, I have eight trays of wonderful chips to have at super bowl today. And Yes, I think they taste like lays potato chips -- but then, it has been so long since I've tasted an actual potato chop, maybe not. But they sure satisfy that oil/salt/crunchie craving I get!

Gee I am green...I started my chips and they were about two hours into drying when my husband went to the basement where I have a dedicated section for my dehydrator and sprouting and such. Well he had a fit that the house (I did not notice it) was starting to smell like dirty socks..and what was I making now...? So then I had to listen to lecture on all the "negatives" to my raw food diet. I left them in but a while later he started again and I removed them washed the dehydrator screens and ate the Kale warm...gee they just don't get it...its ok to smell the cooking sausage, toasted bread, grilled meat ...but gee to smell braggs and veggies..oh my !!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the support, that is why I come here. I get little support from DH, meat lover..and hates veggies (except rappini ! ). He thinks it is a phase, and he thinks if he gives me a hard time I will abandon it. Not a chance.

Rawfigure - Sorry you had to ditch the kale chips -- your DH may have liked them once they were crispy! I think it is marvelous that you are sticking with the raw considering that you are going it alone! Congrats!

My DH commented the kitchen smelled kinda "vinegary" and what was I making? He always taste tests the finished product -- and in most cases helps me eat the stuff. He wasn't too taken with the kale chips - he had his bag of Tostitos. After so many potato chip failures, he was thrilled I finally had something I consider to be a substitute for Lays!

Hope when your DH notices how terrific you look and feel eating raw, he will become a bit less controlling, or at least more tolerant about it. Never know, with your good example, he may give it a try at some point!!!

The on think the dh eats is my choc fudgy hemp balls. loves them.

He has commented my skin is smoother, firmer since I went raw. I have a clearer look, and rarely look tired. Also he is happy the blood sugar issues are gone.

He just does not totally attribute it to the raw food.

Wow - all those wonderful positive changes -- due to going raw. That is great.
As time goes on, he will get use to the raw food and I bet he will even begin to eat more of it! Maybe even give it some of the credit!

My DH is a died-in-the-wool SAD eater. the joke here is "I'm getting him meal by meal". -- he'll try something I make - like it - then eat some of my food for a meal or two.
We went on a vacation, and he ate my food almost exclusively -- so it was a week of raw. When he went back to his sad stuff when we returned home, he really didn't feel well. lol

Again, I think it is awesome that you stick to it. As you know, it is definitely worth it!

Just wanted to add my thanks for the wonderful kale chip recipes. Wow - a little salty as others have said, but amazing. Well worth bumping these up for any newbies to consider.

OK, this one might work a bit better - it has a sweet and salty flavor...let me know how it turns out for you.

1) Stem the kale and cut into palm sized pieces
2) Emerce in salted water and bruise (grab fists of it over and over again). Allow it to soak in the water for about 30 minutes. Drain off water, but do not rinse.
3) Spinkle with 1 tsp. olive oil, and 1 tsp. agave nectar or honey. Toss well.
4) Dehydrate for about 6-8 hours or until crisp.

My kids eat this like crazy! They just love the stuff.

These ones are SOOOO delish!

Chrissy's Goddess Chips

2 bunches kale, broken into large pieces by hand

Dressing:
3/4 c sesame tahini
1/2 c apple cider vinegar
1/2 c water ~ more if needed
1/4 cup fresh parsley
1/4 cup nama shoyu
2 scallions
1 clove garlic
1 lemon, juiced
1/4 t. sea salt

Place kale in a large mixing bowl. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth to get a thick consistency. You may have to add more water. Pour over kale and mix thoroughly with your hands to coat the kale. You want this mixture to be really glued onto the kale.

Place kale onto a Teflex sheet, on top of a mesh dehydrator screen, and dehydrate for 4 hours @ 110 degrees. You'll need to use two trays. Rotate kale occasionally to dry uniformly.

Gosh, you guys are really making me wish I could try my hand at making these! But I am brand new to the raw foods lifestyle and don't have a dehydrator. Does anyone know of a way to use a regular oven to achieve decent results until we get a dehydrator?

Thanks!

You also should REALLY search this forum for the recipe for Chrissy's Goddess Chips. It's fairly recent, too, should only be in the next few pages.... It has pictures and all, and they are fabulous.

Damzylfly - HILARIOUS! I'm fasting right now, so I'm a bit off - LOL!!! I'm such a dork!

WHAT do the initials DH stand for? Many girls refer to their husbands as that and I haven't the faintest...

Hey There Fellow-Oregonian!

I believe DH stands for Dear Husband/Hubby. I am starting my first 10 day Master Cleanse tomorrow. I am very excited about seeing what kind of results I achieve. Love your MySpace page and website!

I have to give a big thumbs up to MaRaw's recipe for kale chips. I have made them in the past and they are really delicious. They are sweet and salty. I tend to add a little more agave though. :p
Mmmmm....think I might have to get some kale at the market now!

I'll have to try MaRaw's recipe too! Looks great.

Thanks Shayna for posting the Goddess Chips. Not only are they great, but also I made extra dressing to take to a restaurant salad bar yesterday. Plus I learned that tahnin+apple cider vinegar+salt = cheese. Yum!
