i get a real salt crunchy need every once and a while and would love some suggestions. I am happy to buy or make. I loved popcorn & salty roasted almonds.

I have tried to do salty crunchy nuts with success. Any tips? :o

Cheers,

EPPP

:) Popcorn is a tough one; not much can take its place.
THIS (http://www.justtomatoes.com/html/product/corn1.html) would probably be closest. It is a dried product, but I do not remember at what temperature it is dried, and depending on what degree "raw" is to you.
You could send them an email and I'm sure you'd get a reply.

Also, I like cauliflower when I want something very crunchy. Not too many things have the same crunch as cauliflower. You could pour some raw sub for butter on it if you'd like and nutritional yeast, if you use it, and some salt.

Best,

Actually, I emailed them last month and yes, they are 100% raw. They are dehydrated at 90 degrees!

eachpeach, for me popcorn is a hard one to substitute for!

what I have started doing lately is just going to my bag of sea salt (I use the guerande stuff from Brittany & I love it), and just take a few kernels of salt. :o

Another thing I like to make on occasion is a big bowl of cauliflower slices with a nice salty mock caesar dressing. (I make Renee Loux Underkoffler's Tamarind caesar dressing, sometimes with and sometimes without the tamarind)

I have read to take olive oil, mix it with salt, and freeze it to get butter cubes, then put that on veggies, etc., for a popcorn fix. Maybe that on some sort of raw cracker, like a buckwheat-rye or grain cracker or something would work if the starch combo is also desired. Then you get the butter, the salt, the starch and the crunch.

Seasoned sunflower seeds do the trick for me. Season them anyway you fancy..terriyaki, honey roasted, nacho cheese, bbq, etc...there are lots of recipes around. Because of the little bit of liquid they stick together in little clumps resembling popcorn!

I sell these in my store and people love them. I also make Alissa's enchilada wrap recipe and cut it into little chips and munch on those during a movie. Yum!
They are sooo good and are the biggest seller at my store.

I missed popcorn a lot at first also, and found these things worked perfectly for me.

Warmly~
Carmel

If you have a dehydrator, I coat kale leaves with tamari sauce, some lemon or vinegar, and a little bit of oil. Dehydrate about 3 or 4 hours. They should be crunchy and salty.

Blessings.

Thanks everyone for the popcorn hints. This is a big one for me too. I'm going to get some "Just Corn" today now that I know it's raw and try some of the other suggestions as well. :)

I've tried it. Don't like it. I like the Just Strawberries though.

Wow, I cannot believe I started this thread in Jan 06'!

What is so funny is that I have. . . . FINALLY FOUND A POPCORN REPLACEMENT!!! Super light, & airy

I came up with this as a mistake two days ago! I sometimes think some of the best recipes are just that . . . a mistake!

I was soaking a small bowl of nuts for a cereal (from Ani Phyos book) the next day and at the last minuet I threw in some flax seeds. When I came down the next morning I found a gelantinus mass! Yes yes I have made flax crackers and know about the flax jell but I just had a brain fart. So for some reason I rinsed the nuts and flax - again another brain fart :o - and dumped the entire mass onto a teflex sheet, flipped it onto the screen when dry enough; forgot about it came back and it was the SINGLE MOST CRUNCHY RAW TREAT I HAVE EVER TASTED!!!!

So I made another batch with a bit of salt added and presto the POPCORN effect!!:D eek:

So here it is: (handful of each, ALL WHOLE, NO GRINDING):

flax seeds (I used golden)
pecan halves
sunflower seeds
sesame seeds
salt (to taste)
water

Soak over night, rinse, dump onto teflex, when dry flip onto screen, continue to dry another full day or till super dry. Break up into big bite sized pieces.

Sweet version:

add to above items:

raisins
pumpkin seeds
salt (reduce salt to a pinch)

After soaking and rinsing add:

Cinnamon (optional) & SMALL AMOUNT of dried cane sugar (Sucanat) or date sugar or maple. LIQUID SWEETNER DOES NOT YIELD A SUPER CRUNCHY CRACKER. I did this and after four days in they are stilllllll bendy. Cinnamon/Sweetner can also be sprinled into or on top too.

So I hope you will all give this a try! I had never made a flax cracker WITHOUT adding some type of pureed/liquid "item" like agave, carrot pulp, apple etc. and just NOT adding these items produced amazing results! :p

Cheers, EPPP

Bless you!!!!!:D Def. going to make this. If you are going to use a little sugar I will tell you that maple syrup DOES make them incredibly crunchy AND adds a glaze like candied nuts~ Thanks so much for this idea!!!

P.S. I've never rinsed flax seeds before after soaking.

Ya know as I said the rinsing was just a brain f**t, had I thought I would not have HOWEVEVR, that's what I did so for these I will be rinsing! I will try it without at some point! Thanks for the maple tip; I have added it to the recipe above!:p

Enjoy,

This is amazing! I have tried to make a quick, super crisp munchy snack for my boys and have had very little luck. But THIS!!!! This is really great, my husband and oldest son couldn't keep thier hands out of the dehydrator last night! Now I just have to get my youngest to try it (he can be very resistant to new "experiments". Thank you for this recipe!!!

I read on Storm & Jinjee's site that they chop up celery into popcorn size chunks and their kids love it. It's crunchy & naturally salty.
