I keep seeing posts where people talk about "one or two spoons of coconut oil". Well, I bought some coconut oil from an Asian shop here in England, and it is white and very solid. The lady in the shop said if I put it in a warm place it will become liquid.
Is that right? How do I get it to become liquid without heating it?
At the moment we have freezing weather in the south east of England so it's not surprising that things have solidified!!
Thanks.

I take mine like butter on a cracker (solid). Just spread it on. Some people take warm water and put it in a bowl, and then put the jar of coconut oil in the bowl of warm water to liquify it.

:p :p :p :p :p
I read somewhere that coconut oil will be solid when at temps of 76 degrees and below and a liquid state at temps of 77 degrees and higher. Hope this is of some help to you.

HI English Tracy, I am also in the south east of England ( Norwich) and yep its freezing, I have the coconut oil and its solid, mainly cos I keep it in the fridge though, and when I want to use it I just stand the jar in hot water and hey presto it thins down, I did find that some of the coconut oils I got at first were horrible to taste and most weren't raw, but in the end I found a good raw one from rainbow foods.

Thanks everyone for this info. The hot water method looks good to me.
Cactus - my parents live in Overstrand near Cromer, Norfolk. It's a small world, isn't it?

Cactus - have you an e-mail address for Rainbow Foods? I'm not sure that my coconut oil is raw.
I'll do an internet search anyway.
Thanks.

English Tracey...........
I love crommer, It one of my most favourite places in the summer, although the pebble beaches took some getting used to as I'm originally from Australia where our beaches are sandy, as for an email address for Rainbow foods, I don't think they have one as I tried a few times to look for them on the net, I used to think they were a chain but now IM not so sure, I know Holland and Barret are through out the UK and Ive bought raw coconut oil through them, maybe you have one near you?

Cactus - Rainbow Foods seems to be a wholesaler. I haven't seen coconut oil in Holland and Barrett but will REALLY look next time!

English Tracy.....
the coconut oil in Holland and Barrett is £9.95 and in a white (small)plastic tub, as for rainbow foods, there is a few on the net but not the one I'm talking about, I use them every week, they are just a little shop in Norwich, but Ive not seen them anywhere else, which is a shame as they sell all the more unconventional things that you don't find in chain stores, good luck:)
As another contributor from 'the other side of the pond', I got mine at Fresh & Wild in London, and Planet Organic, also London, have it too. Have never seen it in any Holland & Barrett -- but the price quoted sounds the same, about £10 for a big jar (which doesn't last long but is gorgeous!)

What is the difference between coconut oil and coconut butter?
In one of Alissa's books, I think, it says if it is in a bottle, it's cooked.
So is this coconut oil COOKED or processed in any way?
Is there a website where I can get more information on it?
Thanks!

Thanks cactus and Lily. When I next go to London I'll check out Planet Organic and Fresh n Wild. I'll look them up on the internet. It would be good to get a lot of supplies in just one place.

I'm also not sure if there is a difference between coconut oil and coconut butter. Would be iinterested to find out.
I believe coconut oil and coconut butter are the same thing, or very similar. On her site, Detox Your world, Shazzie has this to say about the coconut oil/butter she sells from the site:
`This 100% raw coconut oil (coconut butter) comes from wild coconuts on the Fijian Islands in the South Pacific. The coconut flesh is cold-pressed by a fourth-generation coconut grower who produces the finest coconut butter in the world. No other coconut oil on the market is in the same league as this one! Coconut oil/butter consists of 90+% saturated fat -- a very important building block of every cell in the human body -- on the average, each cell membrane consists of 49% saturated fats (cooked saturated animal fat is toxic).
Seen this product cheaper elsewhere? Check the postage costs to get an accurate comparison. We never overcharge on postage, just so we can offer you a better "product price"!
The cholesterol-lowering properties of coconut oil are a direct result of its ability to stimulate thyroid function. In the presence of adequate thyroid hormone, cholesterol (specifically LDL-cholesterol) is converted by enzymatic process to the vitally necessary anti-aging steroids, pregnenolone, progesterone and DHEA. These substances are required to help prevent heart disease, senility, obesity, cancer and other diseases associated with aging and chronic degeneration.
Coconut oil/butter contains up to 50% medium-chain saturated fatty acids which have powerful anti-parasitical, anti-viral, anti-fungal properties. Coconut oil/butter is the best dietary fat source for individuals with candida, hormone imbalances, hypoglycemia, and/or a weakened liver. Coconut oil/butter is an instant energy source. Contains no cholesterol, no trans-fatty acids, not hydrogenated. Excellent as a food and as a lotion for the skin. Sealed in amber glass jars protected from light.'
These jars, are £25 for 24 oz -- blimey, that's a pound an ounce -- the tubs I get from Fresh and Wild etc are about 450g (16 oz) and cost about £10 -- so are a bit cheaper if my sums are right. Haven't tried Shazzie's -- it might be nicer.
Nice as a treat...

Mine is melted at the moment simply because I put it too close to a lamp! I have electrical problems in the kitchen and refuse to use the recessed lighting in there and can get an electrician in there to figure out why the bulbs burn out so rapidly. So the only light I have in there is a little low watt lamp that was in my daughter's room when she was a baby. That was enough to melt it.
When we had this last spell of hot weather, I had to put it in the fridge because it was so runny. And no, it didn't harden up too much as some people think it would. If the jar hadn't been so large I would have put it in the little electric cooler I have that keeps things slighly cooler than room temp.
If you are only using a small amount of it, then take a little cup like a measuring cup or some such thing and either heat up the cup by putting it in hot waterk then putting the oil in there. Or put the oil in the cup, then set the bottom of the cup in some hot water. The stuff really does melt quickly. It will melt just from touching your skin.
