Coconut Oil: Refined vs. Unrefined

Hi All,

I bought coconut oil for the first time today. I bought refined, but didn't know there was unrefined until I went to another store. Is the health difference really great? If there has been a discussion about it already, can you direct me to the thread?

I believe you definitely want unrefined, organic and virgin to be the qualities of your coconut oil as refined is almost like saying "bleached" as in what they do to flour and sugar and it won't be raw. Alissa sells a WONDERFUL one on her site (http://alissacohen.com (https://www.alissacohen.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=65&cl=1&partner=rawk))that smells and tastes wonderful. If you add it to desserts that normally would call for butter such as the crust for a raw cheesecake or raw cookies, etc. adding that oil and a little sea salt and you'd swear butter was in it!

I would definately return the refined coconut oil and get unrefined, virgin and raw coconut oil. I hope you didn't open it yet. Sometimes things like refining can change the chemical structure of the product and that can do things to affect you physically, such as mood swings and things like that. Just to be safe, I would return it.

Here's what the coconut usually looks like before they make refined coconut oil (this is an actual photo of coconut flesh waiting to be made into oil)... now you know why it's such a long process and they have to bleach and deoderize it!!

Unrefined, organic, virgin, cold pressed is the only way to go. And the coconut smell is just magic!!

I bought coconut oil for the first time yesterday after hearing the benefits about it. I bought the organic, unrefined kind.

I went back to Whole Foods and exchanged the refined coconut oil for the undrefined. Whoa, I just had my first smoothie with it....Can you say tropics?!! What an aroma....what a taste! Thanks so much for your help here!
