HIYA!
Brand new here but have been toying with raw / living food since about 1995.
I live in Thailand. I will take a walking tour of the country this year starting in March sometime. Many months. Most or all of 2006 and possibly into 2007. A friend has invited me to walk to China and Tibet. I would not say no. If you or anyone you know might be interested in joining me at least part of the way, please let me know.
I am a Buddhist but I am open and interested in any spiritual / agnostic / atheist path. Buddhism happens to make loads of sense to me. Having said that, in the area of food especially, I'm not reaping the benefits of my raw food / Buddhist practice and I see pretty clearly why. I don't know the deeper more profound reasons however, but I'll tell more about that if anyone's interested. So, if you or anyone you know of may be interested in taking a long or short walk around Thailand, let me know. I've created a blog where I explained more. http://www.blogger.com/posts.g?blogID=21268954
I lived in the SF Bay Area about half my life. I'm 41 now. I've lived in Asia about 15 years. Thailand about 7 years.
In Burlingame Calif I worked at Earthbeam Natural Foods. In 1995 a customer introduced me to the idea of raw foods. I instantly took to the idea and tried it right away. But I had no idea of how to do it. I have a strong feeling I've screwed myself up pretty badly in the intervening years. On the way toward health but see that I'm not interested enough in being healthy to really go for it. This is really rough. Really.
Though in general it all makes enormous sense to me, I don't feel the benefits strongly enough to be decisive with this.
There are enough wonderful fruits and vegetables in Thailand that for someone who does know that it's the way to go, boy, this is the good life. A good durian here isn't hard to find at all. I know pretty well what to do in this arena. And papayas, bananas, as well as other tropical fruits. Great vegetables at fresh markets. I have plenty of experience here. So much fun chatting it up with the vendors. Green coconuts. Freshly pressed coconut milk, drank seconds after being pressed.
Never mind the humidity. The weather is great. Palm trees, coconut trees, banana trees, lush green rice paddies patiently become radiant gold. Walk this scenery. Sleep in temples every day. Walk with the bare minimum. Not too little, not too much. Just right. For months and months. I know the language plenty well. I know people all over the country. Trust that the universe will provide what's really necessary.

I was in Thailand for a month this summer. The fruit was so fantastic! I loved getting young coconuts and drinking them right there with a straw, getting lumyai from neighbors (we stayed in a little village in the north), really, really good pineapple and MANGOSTEENS! Those were my favorite. I wasn't raw at the time, but I did often buy a kilo of mangosteens and eat that as a meal. Everyone thought I was crazy. I want to go back just to eat.

Good luck on your journey!

I'm originally from the Bay Area grew up there and now living in Asia for the past ten years. Your life sounds fascinating. The long walk to China-Tibet is a fantastic adventure. Keep us posted.

Thailand is great. It's an easy plane ride from Hong Hong. We usually go to Bangkok or Phuket for the weekend. In fact one of my client is down there right now doing a detox program in Koh Samui.

It's great coming across another San Fransciscan living in Asia.

Cheers,

MM

Hey Troy..

In your walkabout, have you seen one of those beds I'm looking for? It is a cotton stuffed mat that rolls up really easy because of way it's quilted in lines crosswise. It is used in the country for sleeping on the floor.

It's quilted across like this:

[--------]
[--------]
[--------]
[--------]
[--------]
[--------]

and then when you roll it you can fasten it with a tie. They're about 6 feet in length and maybe 3 feet wide. A grown man can sleep on them comfortably.

If you have any idea what I'm talking about, could you contact me at cameronshostel@yahoo.com and maybe arrange to buy me one? I could paypal you the cash. My friend said they run around $30 US there. They'd be great for floor sleeping.

Help?
