When I add even a little bit raw onion to a dish, like raw rice pilaf, I get the worst heartburn ever. My tummy hurts and whatever is coming up my asaphagus burns so bad, it hurts like crazy. I had to throw the whole bowl away. I have never ever had this reaction to raw onions when I ate them with tomatoes on a slice of whole wheat bread. The problem is, I like the taste. Is there a good substitute or onions that are not that mean?

Maybe it is just that the batch you have at the moment have a higher level of some substance that does not suit you. I imagine that this could be because of the soil they were grown in. Dont give up on them. Try green onions or red onions or shallots. You are bound to find something to suit you.

I was JUST about to make a post about onions. They affect me too. Lately they make me feel like I have a sinus infection. My stomach gets all nasty and drainage (sorry, gross). I'm glad to know I'm not the only one, but it's unfortunate. I hope you can find something that works for you!

I believe there is a spice/herb which can be used to replace onion but you'd have to check it out. It's called 'asafoetida' (that is the right spelling) or 'hing'. Asian groceries would have it.
I've never tried it so can't give any more info.

IMO, NEVER eat cooking onions, spanish onions, etc.
You could try a leek (white part only) and see if that does it for you. Also green onion is a good suggestion. Maybe veer more toward garlic if the onions are still giving you trouble. I also like adding chopped chives in large amounts for an onion taste. The chives that aren't flat, the ones that are more round/cylindrical taste more oniony than the flat chives which are usually garlic chives.

Regular onions kill my stomach. I'm feel sick and gross after, however, raw red onions work. Try different more mild onions and see it these might not be better.

Maybe give sweet vidalia onions a try, they seem to be "mild" enough for most people. I've used them in a lot of recipes that call for reg onions and have had less "issues" with them. Vidalia's have a mellow, juicy flavor...

I agree with using leeks. They are pretty mild. I've had mixed experiences with red onions...sometimes they're nice and mild...other times they were kinda strong.
