I recently purchased and read Alissa's book. It is helpful, but I am a little confused about the use of nuts and seeds. Several recipes call for grinding the nut or seed into a dry powder. Can this be done with a soaked nut or seed? Or, does the recipe intend that an unsoaked seed or nut be ground down? I'm sort of new to raw foods and need to understand whether the enzyme inhibitors in unsoaked nuts/seeds is something to be concerned about if one truly seeks the benefits of the live food lifestyle.

Can anyone help with my confusion?

Thank you.

alan-
if the recipe called for 2 c almonds (for an example) ground then it would be 2 c non-soaked almonds. If it was otherwise it would say 2c sprouted almonds. Using soaked/sprouted nuts would change the flavor/consistancy of the food. However if you wanted you could soak/sprout the nuts then dry them until crunchy. Never tried this. Hope this helps.

Ephemeralgrl is correct in what she said in my experience.
For almonds, I will often used soaked/dried almonds in place of unsoaked.

Thanks Ephmealgrl and Revvell. If not soaked, though, then the enzyme inhibitors still would present, right? Is that oaky? Seems like all that I've read indicates otherwise.

Again, I'm sort of new to this and I appreciate your thoughts and advice.

Alan,

That would depend on the seeds/nuts. Almonds "should" be soaked as well as a few others (forget which as I don't concern myself w/ this all that much). There is a post here in which RawPriestess states which nuts/seeds "need" soaking to release the enzyme inhibitors. Since I don't eat nuts that often or make many of the recipes anymore, I usually just follow the recipes whether to soak for that particular recipe ~ or not.

Thanks for the Raw Priestess info. Any suggestions on how I could find the post you referenced?

You might go up to the banana and throw in some keywords such as "nuts soaking" or something... OR go through all her posts which would be a bit time consuming; OR pm her and ask for the information.

On page 287 Alissa says....

"Although certian nuts and seeds are healthier and easier to digest if soaked, you should only soak the nuts in these recipes if you are directed to do so., otherwise the recipes may not come out as expected. If you have not planned ahead and do not have sprouted nuts and seeds, you can still make the recipe, most of the time with fantastic results."
