View Full Version : Did I do that wrong? Coconut oil & smoothies?

ok am I doing something "wrong" or am I expecting something wrong?

I've tried using coconut oil in my last few smoothies. It tastes ok but there seem to be a lot of floaty coconut oil bits. Granted I do have a really cheap blender. Here's my pattern...

spinach & water, liquified
add frozen & fresh fruit & coconut oil, blend
more water if needed.

am I doing something wrong? Or do I have to just get used to the bits?

Coconut oil is a new fav. yummy!

two things you can try:
1) don't use frozen fruit -- the coconut oil will solidify on contact or
2) melt the coconut oil to liquid state (put desired amount in a glass and set it in a warm water bath for a minute or two) -- then pour the liquid oil through the top of the blender while it is running.
hope this works for you!

Yuck.. are you guys SURE you are supposed to use coconut OIL in your smoothies? Where did you read/hear this?

I use fresh Thai coconuts, which are full of coconut water, and I use the jelly from those. But I've never heard of using oil?

Yep, it's the ice or frozen fruit used. The addition of coconut oil in my smoothies is such a treat, I don't care about the little pieces. What I've done is put it into the vitamix before the ice part.

Absolutely delish with banana/pineapple or banana/mango (mouth is watering right now...)

The addition of any oil, or flaxseed, or walnuts or anything "fatty" will keep the foaming down in your smoothie. The foam can be a turnoff to folks new to the idea. Plus the oil stuff is good for you in moderate amounts!

Have fun!

You can use whatever you'd like... what I found when I started raw was that when I made a smoothie with coconut oil and hemp protein powder, it really helped keep away cravings for cooked foods.

And you folks are absolutely right, you don't want to mix the coconut oil in at the same time as cold stuff, and in the colder weather, when it's solid, you'll want to melt it first. I do that by filling a bowl with hot water, then putting a smaller bowl with the oil in it. It melts in a few minutes.

Just blend with the liquid before you add the other ingredients~

I had one yesterday with pineapple blended with a little coconut oil (pina colada). Yummy but I wished I'd left out the ice so it was smooth and creamy instead of having chunks!! Next time!

Y'all might want to rethink adding ice -- unless you're freezing your filtered, bottled, or other good water in your ice cube trays.

yep, I got it to work & even got my mom (ms anti health food) to try one.

I ended up having to liquify my oil in warm water, it is winter in WI after all. I also used less frozen fruit than I usually do & it was fine.

The pina colada smoothie is to die for.
