I have been about 95% raw for almost 2 weeks now and I have noticed the last couple of days I have been pretty much stuck in the house for the way I feel. I have been coughing so much that I feel like I'm going to vomit. I also have so much muces in my chest, throat and sinuses. Everytime I cough, muces comes up. My ears are also itching. I was wondering if this was a detox side effect? Has anyone had such a side effect?
Also, the first week, I lost 4 lbs. and I weighed myself today and ahven't lost anymore. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
I have been juicing greens, garlic, carrots, radishes, celery, or whatever else I have...a couple of times a day. Plus I have a big salad and some ezekiel cereal with rice milk. I have made the almost tuna and like it. I miss bread and was thinking about having the ezekiel tortillas. ( it says it's live on the package)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)
Tracy
The Ezekial tortillas are NOT raw. I emailed them and they responded saying so.
Sorry!
If these are symptoms you've never had before, it wouldn't hurt to go to the doctor just to make sure you haven't caught a bug. The symptoms people associate with detoxification are very idiosyncratic, so what others experience are not necesssarily experienced by others. I hope you let us know how things go. If you end up thinking it's detox, I'd be interested in knowing what led you in that direction. Currently, I don't believe there is truly "detox" - particularly so soon after switching to raw- but I'm open minded enough to hear opinions and the evidence supporting it. :)
Hope you feel better soon.

I had pretty much the same symptons a month ago or so but took antibiotics and it went away. Maybe the symptons are coming up again since they were pushed back with the antibiotics before. So checst congestion or wheezy and coughing isn't a detox, or maybe it's an allergy?
Thanks for the two responses, I appreciate it.

If someone is on drugs or coffee, etc. the detox effects WILL take place soon after the thing is eliminated from the person's body so I don't understand why people think that detox won't take effect "so soon" after going raw.
You took antibiotics the last time you went through these same symptoms...yes, the body IS going to get rid of whatever is within. That IS what colds, flu, "bugs" are...an attempt at cleansing (or detoxing). Your body apparently has an overabundance of mucous inside amongst other things, and that stuff needs to come out. Your body is using these symptoms (the coughing, the wheezing, etc) to try and get it out. If you're coughing mucous up, try and get it OUT by hocking it up, if you're anything like me and can't do that, allow the gag reflex to go ahead and cause you to throw up (more than likely the only thing that will come out is the mucous and phlegm...sorry for the graphicness) or blow it out of your nose if it tries to come out that way.
I also suggest HIGHLY that you stop eating cooked food while your body is going through this. Drink water, drink your juice and try eating ONLY light, juicy fruits so your body doesn't have all this excess work digesting while it's trying to cleanse, heal and recover. Also, rest as much as you possibly can.
But yes, if you suppressed these symptoms once before, it sounds as though they're coming back because again, the body WILL eliminate what's offending it or at least try very hard to, so if you end up suppressing again this time around, you can expect to go through this yet again.
Just keep in mind that anytime you experience symptoms be it cold symptoms, flu symptoms, rashes, acne, allergies...whatever they are, it's your body's way of trying to get rid of something that's inside offending it!
Detoxing = cleansing...they body is ALWAYS continually trying to cleanse itself!

i was thinking you might also try getting into green smoothies since you like to juice so much. there's posts about that (ala victoria boutenko) that you can check.
perhaps the added nutrients from these will aid you in the detox process. can you try to avoid cooked and see what happens? give yourself a trial period at least as a goal.
you will definitely improve over time.

Can the green smoothies work just as well in any blender? (since I don't have a vita mix.)

I think it is interesting - all of the detox systems and stories I have read about. I wonder though...if something is not right with me...I say that because I have never had a major detox, the most noticeable thing I have experienced is being tired which I expected (because of the fasting) but as far as the coughing, body aches, rashes, pains, etc. that I have heard about...I've never had that, I do know that I am detoxing though..I guess it like everyone says..we are all different.
traceyb519 - I know exactly what it is you're talking about I've only been raw for 10 days and I'm experiencing those same symptoms (all of them). My juice concoction is almost the same as your except for the radish I use beets with a half of lemon. Cereal TJ's cream of wheat and oatmeal. I've also had a lot of itching and was thinking I might be allergic to something.

I'm starting to feel better and those awful symptons are leaving. I still am having a little mucous but hopefully that will leave soon.

I'm going through the same thing and have had big problems staying raw while feeling this way. I'm not sure if it is a cold or detox, but it is not fun!
Good luck getting through it! YOu aren't alone!
