I saw a kit to make more attractive counter space out of the top of your stove. It was two large pieces of tempered glass, with "feet" on them to raise them above the height of the burners. Each piece of glass would cover half the stove, the front and rear burner on each side, they met in the middle.

I thought they were a fabulous idea for us raw foodies who maybe aren't in a position to get rid of the whole stove, but don't use the darned thing much or at all. I also thought if you can't find one near you, you could probably go to a glass store/glass cutter and get one made. I think it was good in two pieces like that for stability, plus you could use each side as a cutting board if you wanted, then it would be a less awkward size for cleaning than if it was all in one piece. It actually has a great look, the tempered glass is nice, sort of frosted, with a pale green tinge.

I saw them at Winners and HomeSense. (you Canadians out there will know these stores, they are sort of discount re-seller stores that get nice merchandise, often really high end designer merchandise that other stores didn't sell, sometimes just average stuff. (I got a Ralph Lauren $275 skirt for 49.99, a gorgeous $130 blouse for 39.99, but that's another story ;) ).

BTW, there was also a good spiralizer there for $9.99 (Cdn), and they had a large selection of mandolines (from 29.99-49.99, one of the 49.99 one sells for around $200), a nice fancy nutcracker from Zyliss, bamboo cutting boards, and lots of other neat stuff for raw types so it maybe worth a look if you're near one, especially at HomeSense. Too bad no Vitamixes or Excaliburs there  .

exurb,

What city are you in?? I'm in Victoria and have looked EVERYWHERE for a spiral slicer. Alas, the only ones I can find are expensive Japanese models upwards of $150!! I would order one off Ebay, but shipping can be a pain. Oh I hope there is a spiral slicer at my HomeSense...I hope I hope I hope!

We did something similar in our last place (but not nearly as nice). We bought a $5 piece of white scrap wood at Ikea (they sell spare parts in the discount room) and just placed it over the stove top. It worked great but did get nicked when used as a cutting board.

Cheers,
Sheryl

Kris I'm in Ontario. They had lots of stock of the spiral slicer when I was there, so hopefully you can find one if you keep checking in there (you know how those places are, they're pretty hit and miss and you sort of have to keep popping in, but maybe it's heartening that they had quite a few when I was there). I bought it, so far have used it on carrots and beets and it works great. I don't know what brand it is but it just says "SPIRAL SLICER" on it, then underneath that For Vegetables. $9.99 :)

Sheryl, that sounds like a good idea too. I guess the glass top would stay nice looking and not get nicked. I thought it had a look that could hold up to even the most designer type kitchen too, it looks pretty slick. It's sort of opaque/frosted too which I like.

Using the glass as a range top is a great idea, I've never seen anything like that. I used two maple cutting boards side-by-side to cover the stove top and make the area usable for food prep and its worked out well.

Thanks so much, exurb! A new Winners/HomeSense combo store just opened here on the island so I will head out there this weekend. I've been wanting to make REAL zucchini noodles for a year now. I'll cross my fingers...
