I posted a question about raw peanuts last week and heard there is some kind of toxic mold that can happen, I miss them so much. Before I found that out, I ran out of Almond butter and used raw peanut butter instead for Alissa's fudge balls. They were so wonderful! So is there anywhere I can find out more about this peanut thing? I did notice I didn't see any in Alissa's book.

There is another thread here about peanuts also, you may want to do a search on. I am 38 yrs old and have eaten raw peanuts as long as I can remember. I live in Alabama, and peanuts are a huge crop here. There are so many opinions about everything, I read an article from a doctor last week about mold and sprouting, I will try and find it to refresh what I read, but plenty of people sprout. So if you are used to eating raw peanuts and have never had a problem then I would say go for it. There are alot of people with alergies to peanuts as well, so use your best judgement.

I got some raw peanuts a few weeks ago (from Orkos) and they tasted like dirt to me!! Why? I used to love love LOVE peanutbutter, and although I know they are roasted or heat treated, I actually hoped the raw kind would taste the same... I was so disapointed...

Did anybody make peanutbutter with raw peanuts yet? Can you give me the recipe? Thanks!

I'm not very fond of raw peanuts either... tastes too much like sprouts. Well... they are not bad tasting... it's just that they don't taste like they "should", ie roasted and salted :P

I wonder how they'd turn out if one were to coat them in a spice mix and dehydrate them?

I agree with my friend glad2bme,

I haven't had raw peanuts in many years. I used to LOVE the dry roasted ones. When I did have the raw ones I didn't think they were very appetizing. But now that I am raw I think a little sea salt and olive oil can cure anything....lol. But if you are used to eating them with no problems like those southern belles in Alabama, go for it. I will like to try them again soon though.

Peace.

I too have read that they contain a mold as well, but again, I agree with those that have eaten then, and how bad can they be when George Washington Carver created so much with them.

I will say that I did have some raw peanut butter - did not quite taste like dirt, but a little different , milder than the commerical peanut butter.

This is an area I wonder if people mess with to much. I really have a hard time believing anything God created for food, and peanuts would be one of them, is bad for us. I read recently according to a well known doctor, not sure of his name so don't want to guess, to him eating sprouts is like the kiss of death! So agree with what has been said if you like them and have no problem with them eat them. :)

There is a fungus called Aspergillus which grows on Peanuts. It is basically imposible to get peanuts without at least some trace amount of this fungus. It produces a toxin called Aflotoxin, and yes, it is toxic. However, high heat does not inactivate this toxin, so eat all the raw peanut butter you want, because your chances of eating the toxin are the same whether its heated or raw. Plus, the raw peanuts are alive and therefore much better for you. Don't beleive anyone who tells you to stay away from raw peanuts for just this reason. Peaple have been eating peanut for a long time, and I have never heard of anyone dying from them except for allergy related issues (which is actualy more likely related to the fungus than the peanuts......). Eat up and enjoy!!

I go nuts over peanuts!!! Or any nuts for that matter!! Once pop I can't stop!! :D having said that, peanut is of course as most know is categorized as a legume. I am with most who posted here, if you have no problem consuming raw peanuts and that you enjoy them, just go ahead and listen to your body. It will tell you when it has enough of it. And as Curtis mentioned it well, I do not think the Creator creates these foods to bring problems to us. I believe its all in each individual's systems and mindset, believe in no one but your true self. What is good for one may not be for another. Be vigilant and listen to yourself, your body is the best doctor. I had an allergic test and was pleasantly surprised to not be allergic to these peanutty haven!!

and oh Jay.... I was a peanut butter girl prior to raw and now I discovered tahini!! I have tried several tahinis but this one that I got recently tasted oh so much like peanut butter but much better!!! The health shop here buys them in bulk and re-bottled them so its only labelled as Organic Raw Tahini. This is by far the best Tahini I have tasted, better than Maranatha's. But of course I did some alterations to it, I added salt, agave and a little bit of carob powder. It tastes just like the creamy peanut butter. If you prefer them chunky, you may want to add coarsely grounded raw cashews/macadamias. I have yet to have my own tahini butter. I hope the result will be the same :p
