Hello,
I have been eating raw for the last 3 weeks or so. I feel its working for me. However, now and even before going on the raw diet, whenever I eat nuts; almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc., I get a runny nose, gas (foul smelling), bloating, constipation. I have heard such symptoms after ingesting a food is a sign of allergy to that particular food. I also notice I get whiteheads, the same thing that would happen if I ate fried or very oily foods.
I have even tried soaking them to make them soft. I chew them very well to them point they are in a near liquidfied state. I still get the same reactions.
Today I ate only a handful of almonds, 5 or 6, with the same results. Is this an allergic reaction I am having? Has anyone else experienced this problem? I would appreciate a reply regarding my problem. I love nuts but may have to accept the fact I can't eat them. I beginning to wonder about avocados as well:( Thanx.

Peter,
It sounds as though there is something in your body that needs to come out and nuts are aggravating the situation. I wouldn't necessarily say that you'll NEVER be able to eat them again...but perhaps maybe for now you can eliminate them and get your body TOTALLY cleaned out. Then, try to reintroduce them later.
My youngest daughter had severe eczema and while her system was still toxic, she could not eat nuts or citrus fruits. Once we began eating more and more raw, I noticed she still had reactions to those foods. I stopped giving them to her and focused on the raw foods she could eat with no problems.
Later, I reintroduced them to her diet and now she can eat them with no effects whatsoever. Same with my husband. He used to have so-called allergies to cats and strawberries and would break out in hives. He was just severly toxic. Now that he's cleaner, he can be around cats AND eat all the strawberries he wants and no hives!
People think you get allergies to (healthful, natural) foods...I think that it's the result of a toxic system and certain foods will trigger reactions of the body trying to cleanse. Runny nose, runny eyes, sneezing, skin outbreaks...all mechanisms the body uses to try and get what's already in there, out.
Give your body a chance to cleanse...maybe even consider a fast if you think you could do that and later on, try the nuts again.
Edited to add:
As for the gas and bloating...that's something that occurs in a lot of people in the beginning stages of being raw. It could also be the result of food combining. Also, almonds need to be soaked for at least 12 hours to germinate..not just to soften.
Hi,
I am not sure what I could advise..but I just wanted to let you know I get the same belly issues with nuts soaked or unsoaked and with avocados. I food combine also. I am guessing my body needs to clean out a bit then I will add them back in. I have noticed that when avocados are blended I digest them a bit better. Good luck...

Yes it sounds like a reaction. Does not mean allergic, just a sensativity, but as time passes they could get worse and you don't want that. I have MANY food intolerances and sensitivites and some anaphalaxic foods. It's best to not have any at all. Your body does not want it and it is trying to get it out of you as best as it can. If you want to talk more about it in depth feel free to email me. I unfortunately know a lot about this subject.

I don't know if this would help you, but have you checked into the raw integrity of those nuts you eat? First of all, I don't eat cashews anymore, because in my understanding most cashews, even those labelled raw, have been heated. As I understand from reading about the processing of cashews, in order to extricate them from their shell, they are boiled first. The ones labelled raw just don't undergo a subsequent roasting but they've been boiled prior to shelling. It is very difficult to find truly raw cashews, as they are not easily extricated from their shells. I think Dr. Cousens also said they're high for mycotoxins, but I'm not sure I'm remembering correctly. Second, on the almonds, I have been having difficulty finding truly raw almonds which haven't been pasteurized. I have also seen walnuts that are coated with everything from preservatives to hydrogenated oils to keep them "fresh". Nuts are also often not fresh, and their oils go rancid. I have had good luck with the walnuts from costco, they have no preservatives and have been fresh. I soak them overnight and rinse.
Do you eat any foods using buckwheat groats in them, if you're having a hard time with the nuts and avos I'm thinking that in the meantime that might give you something that feels substantial.

Hello,
I want to thank everyone (Rawinlocks, RMD, Exurb, and Dreamrawalwz) for the helpful advice you gave me regarding my negative reations to nuts and avocados. The replies you gave made a lot of sense.
I do believe my body is very toxic especially after researching the information you all provided. Thanks again. :)
With love,
