Can anyone tell me why some raw foodists seem to have a certain kind of body (scent) ? I noticed the smell isn't stinky arm pit smell, but something else I can't describe.
I just want to know so this doesn't happen to me. My friends are really nice and probably won't tell me if this ever happens to me.

In my humble opinion.... there are some people raw foodists, veggies and vegans and who have a body odor for a number of reasons:
1. they don't want to use anything at all and don't believe in washing themselves on a day to day basis (total extremist, i know people like this)
2. i've met people who are aware of their body odor and they think it is quite natural and actually like the scent
3. it is in their system, most people don't realize that certain food combinations (especially if there is several years of poor dieting and food combining as a history) relate to we smell when we perspire, also, if we are eating a certain spice all the time, sometime we have that scent long after we stopped eating it (I notice this a lot with people who eat tons of garlic which I love, they may have not had any garlic for the past week but it is in their system, you can literally smell certain food scents on people)

Many vegans use olive soap because it is a natural vegan soap. However, it doesn't have the necessary odor fighting deodorant to make one smell fresh. I use to use olive soap, but I switched to other vegan soaps that have more deodorizing power.

As people begin to change their lifestyles, many stop using (especially) anti-persperant (that's a good thing) and/or deoderant. Personally, I rarely use anything other than a good skin brushing and water.
As our systems clean out, varying odors happen. As perspiration is made of the same stuff as urine, unless one is drinking enough water, fragrance or odor happens.
Also, if someone eats a lot of garlic, they tend to exude a very strong ummm, fragrance and, unless they quit, there's not a darn thing they can do about it because it comes out of their pores. Don't ask me how I know. :p

I make the ceasar dressing from alissas book and for i cup of pine/cashews theres 1 large or 2 sm garlic cloves and on one huge salad i use 1-2 tblspn. is this enough garlic consumes about daily to make me start smelling?
The body releases a lot of toxins while detoxing. I know I had horrible breath for weeks and it was part of the detox I was going thru. Our bodies have a lot of toxins to get rid of and the body is going to rid itself by any means it can including skin pores.
So if your new to this lifestyle that may be a cause. the body can detox for years ! but you'll notice this the most in the first few months.

I have never noticed that before, but I only know 1 other raw fooder and that is my mother who always smells like a bed of roses. I would guess that the bad odor is caused from detox. However, funny you should post this coment, I have noticed as a raw fooder that other people are starting to smell funny. Sometimes so bad I cant get over it...Yuck!

At a recent potluck I hugged two women who have been 100% raw for years, one was the speaker - they both had a very distinctive scent - the same scent. It was not offensive but noticible and I have wondered what it was - very musky. I assumed it was garlic.

Sounds about right.

One thing that I have noticed since going raw is that my family (husband and children)all have terrible metalic smelling breath. I never noticed it before. I don't know why I do now but it doesn't go away. I can't stand it when they breathe in my face right now. :p
Of course they don't know it because I would never say anything to them about it.

To answer your question "You smell what you eat". So, if you eat a durian, you will smell it under your armpits. And so on.
Best,

I would just tell them so they don't go around offending other people :) Or if you prefer another idea parsely is excellent as a palate cleanser and breath freshner (eaten in a salad or by itself or juiced)... If they are not into parsely there are some great natural mouth rinses in the health food stores...I have been blessed not to have strong pits or a noticeable odor when cleansing..I stopped using those commercial deodorants a long time ago cause I didn't need them and because of the link to breast cancer and other illnesses...When I used to go to the gym all the time, I would apply some lemon grass or maybe lavendar (a spray formula I made) and that would be all I needed, I could work out for 3 hours and be sweaty and still smell good... Lordy, I hope that doesn't ever change..

Oh, yes! I wholeheartedly agree!! I cannot stand to use a public restroom anymore, for the smells that are coming out of people (cooked carnivores in particular) YEEEWW!! It smells like something crawled up in there and died! (which, of course, it did! but the cc's don't even seem to notice!)
But I have a sensitive nose. I can smell curry or cumin a mile off if a Middle Easterner or Latino walks into the area. :) Fortunately, I totally love foreign cuisines. LOL!!
The downside of having a good sniffer is that I can smell beer coming out of someone's pores, too. And beer smells like sweat or urine to me! EEEEEEEEEEEWWW!!! BLECH!!!!!
I've wanted to talk to other raw fooders for a while now about this topic, to see if I was the only one noticing this.
Anyway, I've been raw for quite a while now and my own bo and other smells are barely noticeable any more. Things must be getting cleaner internally. Yes, I do bathe daily, brush my teeth twice a day, wear organic deodorant, etc.
But I still eat a couple of cloves of garlic a day (1 each blended into my salad dressing at lunch and dinner) and no one has ever said anything....maybe they are too nice.
Truth be told, the chlorophyll in the dark green leafies I eat with that salad are probably improving the breath and body odor. Chlorophyll is a great internal deodorizer. (like the parsley recommended by the previous poster)
I think the raw-fooder smell is probably fruit, the sweet, light, fresh smell....am I right?

I like comedian Dom DeLuise's comment about himself: "if you are what you eat then you are looking at a Hostess Twinkie."

I read that just 100 mg of chlorophyl takes care of the stink(even poo and urine). One more reason to love greens!

I know this is going to sound insane, but I have been smelling Alissa's Chicken Strips under my arm pits! I ate some of those yesterday. I have been having stinky arm pits ever since I have went raw. I used to be able to go without deoderant, but not since raw. Probably just detox, and garlic, I haven't been able to go without it. I have noticed the longer I stay 100% the less stinky it gets.

Now then,
Don't remember who posted this but, I've found, as I love Indian food waaay too much, that one thing for taking care of bad body odor is wheatgrass juice. Drink enough in your vege fruit juice mix, and hey presto, smell disappears from every part of your body.
Also as said on greenchefs.tv, core your garlic to get rid of garlic odor. I love garlic too much anyway, main thing being Lebanese garlic sauce, it beats any dairy mayo, and cleans your blood, and is raw. TKO!
Anyway Ciao.

My daughter which I hadn't seen since trying to go raw said I had a different smell then we discovered instead of using lotion like I use to I now use coconut oil on my skin.

After the initial detox was over I noticed (and hubbie verifies)..
No more gum, breath mints needed ...my breath is fresh (and I do not eat /like garlic or onion so that helps too !).
My friends who are on Hi Prot diets have bad breath ! They chew gum.
I was able to switch to Tom's Natural Deo , no more anti perspirant needed.
I just got back from a 40 min run and through I need to shower I do not smell as offensive as before Raw !
other unmentionable odors gone too...

Chlorophyll will cleanse and take care of odors, as a pp mentioned. Wheat grass, chlorella, liquid cholorophyll etc....
