View Full Version : Sprouting seeds or beans

I did a search here and didn't find my answer. I want to sprout seeds (and maybe even some beans, like garbanzos) but can I get those seeds right out of the bulk bins at the HFS, or do I need to order specific seeds for sprouting. What about beans that are hard like garbanzos? I'm ready to make my own alfalfa sprouts, but haven't seen seeds....so maybe I have to order them. Thanks for your help. Also I would eventually like to try other varieties like brocolli sprouts, etc. Also can someone recommend a good seed to start with? Which ones are good for "sprout eating"? Thanks,

All raw seeds and beans should be capable of sprouting. If they do not then they most likely are not raw and should be avoided in any case. You should be able to find alfalfa seeds in the health food store and brocoli seeds as well (I have only seen the latter in the past 6 months as they are new to the market here).

I just did my first sprouting. I used dried chickpeas I had in my cupboard and followed the directions in Alissa's book. It's so exciting and very miraculous to watch. I had no idea the dried peas and grains I already have can be sprouted.
It took about 24 hours to see the sprouts start to appear so be patient. I think some things sprout faster than others.

A good place to get a variety of seeds is www.sproutpeople.com.

Thanks, I checked out sproutpeople. Seems like a great place to "get it all".

I wholeheartedly agree --- miraculous! I just sprouted my very first lentils simply in a bowl like Alissa suggests in her book. The sprouts came out perfect. Taste is of course completely different from cooked (which I love) but still good.
I also tried wild rice, but it didn't sprout! :( I think I read on Shazzie's web site that wild rice isn't raw, that would explain why it didn't work. Anyhow I am looking forward to sprouting grains next.

So, regular dried chickpeas and lentil from the bulk bins at my HFS would probably sprout? That would be nice....I hate ordering online, I like it NOW!
