Having a bit of fun with it ;)

Once upon a time there was a girl who was cursed by an evil witch named Fibromyalgia, who transformed her from a happy, skipping child into a girl living in a gray fog of pain. The witch told the girl that the only way to break the spell was for her to eat pure fruits and vegetables and drink cool spring water, as if she lived in a beautiful garden.

To make this task nearly impossible for the girl, the witch surrounded her with sugary smells, colorful advertisements, supermarkets bursting with supposedly edible "goodies"...The evil witch disguised her poison wares as "food" everywhere the girl went, hoping she would be lured by the smells, sights and sounds.

But the girl was determined to eat only the healing garden foods and, day after day, she turned her back on the witch's poison and ate only the purest delights (especially bright red apples!) With every bite of fruit and ever sip of pure water, the girl got a little bit stronger and more alive.

The witch was furious! "Nobody escapes my curse this easily" she thought. "I'll give her the worst challenge yet!" She waved her evil wand and a restaurant sprung up, filled with the most diabolical illusion she had ever invented...Waiters smiling, a fireplace glowing, wine bottles twinkling, aromas of "food" in the air. As a final evil touch, the witch gave the restaurant a name sure to confuse the girl: Olive Garden.

While the witch hid in the shadows, she watched as the girl walked past the restaurant and saw the hopeful green sign with the word Garden on it. "Could it be!?" she thought. "Is this, at last, a restaurant that is not part of the witch's spell?" The girl and her family entered and were seated, but all too soon the girl's hopes were dashed.

On every table were parts of animals from land and sea, pig and squid, bird and cow, cooked in burning oils and covered with milky sauce. While all around her people feasted on such fare, the girl searched the menu for something--anything--from a real garden to eat. She found only one thing, a salad, and just when she was about to eat it, one of the witch's helpers rushed over to grate poisonous cheese all over it. "No!" cried the girl, causing the helper to slink back to his corner.

But even that salad had a hidden curse in it. When the girl returned home, her mouth was so dry, her thirst so terrible, she could barely croak the word "Water!" Only after ten glasses of cool pure water did she begin to recover. As she lay her head on her pillow that night, the girl vowed that she would never be tricked again by the witch. She would indeed outwit the evil Fibromyalgia! She closed her eyes and had a delicious dream about dancing among the olive trees in a real olive garden.

Hi Melissa,

What a TRUE story you wrote. I rarely go out to eat, but when I do, my Fibromyalgia and headaches flare up!!!, even when I just eat their veggies (cooked). There are hidden things in these foods!!!!

Melissa,
As i read this story i thought it was going to be funny, but i had tears in my eyes as i read this because it has such meaning to me.
For so many years i struggled with fibromyalgia. While friends thought i was crazy for eating raw foods, family persuaded me to eat just a little and my own self with thinking i was being too rigid and neurotic. All the while struggling with the ideals of raw food and balance, keeping a sane approach to this 'radical' way that i chose to eat that i knew would make me healthy but, i thought, would leave me with no friends, no social life, no room in my life for the fun i used to have cooking, going out to eat, etc....
It can be a hard road in the beginning for sure. But it is so worth the reward. The fog of pain no longer lurks over my days, but instead that vision you painted of the little girl dancing among the olive trees is now the reality of my life. Its so easy to forget how badly i used to feel when now days its just a distant memory.
Thank you for that story and for the reminder of how far ive come.

THANK YOU MELISSA. I too have tears flowing down my face because I too have been cursed by this witch. Although better, not well, I have good days and bad days. Thank GOD for the good days, there were none of them a month ago. I will dance with you among the trees very soon. We are here for you.

Hi Rawkinlocs,

Thank you for your concern about us that have this Fibromyalgia. You're so thoughtful!

I'm extremely lucky that by changing my thyroid meds, I have none to very little pain anymore. If I eat too much cooked food it does come back . . . stay mostly raw and it goes away. I know if I quit my thyroid meds now, I would probably be in a lot of pain. I really need to keep traveling down my road to all raw, get off the meds and be pain free without the meds. I can do it!!!!! :)

Hi Melissa,

I love your story!! I've also been cursed by the witch. She must have been really angry when she cursed me too  because it's bad, but I am doing much better, although I have a ways to go. Like most people, I am presently being tempted by by the witch with holiday food. Thanksgiving and Christmas parties offer a whole host of foods that are bound to sabatoge our diets. I'm fighting off a cold, and I'm sure it's because of the way I've been eating lately. My hubby and I just went to a restuarant. I had the vegetable plate, but he had a linguini, and it reminded me of your story when one of the "witch's helpers" rushed over and offered him grated parmesan.

I really appreciate your story. I think it touched a lot of people here. :)

Hi everyone. I'm so happy that my little story touched you. In "real life" I'm a writer and writing teacher but, until now, have never written about my illness or raw food experience. New material! Nice to have readers who truly "get" this whole experience. Thanks.

Wow that story describes me also. I have been challenged with this problem and others more serious. But the Fibromyalgia is a powerful enemy. I feel so awful when I eat cooked that I am actually afraid now of cooked food. I appreciate your story so much. Big hugs to you and all those who suffer from this diabolical syndrome. Also now that we feel better on raw food those can be generous hugs instead of the lite pats we needed to get before because of the pain. :)

Hi Fightyorke,

Yes, it was Armour thyroid. Synthroid only contains T4. I was not converting my T4 to T3 (T3 does 90% of the work). Armour Thyroid contains T4, T3, T2, T1, T0 and something else . . . anyway, once I got the T3, all my somptoms were gone in 10 days. T2 also helps in weight loss.

I know once I'm all raw, my body will take care of my throid and I won't need the Armour Thyroid either.

Melissa, what a beautiful story! I fought the witch and I'm beating her now! I'm already starting to forget the pain, and I hope that you will soon be able to forget it too. Someday the pain will be just a distant memory! :)
