I'm organizing a group of raw folks to join us for the 2006 Chicago Marathon. So far there's about 4 or 5 Living on Live Food teachers that are "in training."

I'd like to invite anyone interested to join us. I'd really like to make a HUGE statement about the raw food lifestyle by having as big a group of us as possible. I will attempt to have media coverage, and we can all wear t-shirts that have raw sayings on them.

The marathon is October 22 (more info at http://www.chicagomarathon.com/) Official timing ends at 6.5 hours, which is a pace just under 15 minutes per mile.

Our private training support group is at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/runraw/ and we're urging folks who are participating to keep a training log at www.coolrunning.com (it's free to sign up).

So who's with us??? :D :D :D

Krista,

I'm going to think about it...as I've said before when I quit running a few years ago I had a bad injury so I am more than a little nervous about running again. However, you've peaked my interest.

Tim, perhaps you'd like to start slow, by walking, and hanging out with us on the list. You don't have to make a commitment now if you're not ready, but you'll have your body in motion already, just incase you decide to go ahead... what do you think? :)

Teri, yes, that would be great! I'll have to check in on that thread to see how things are going :)

I would actually think about walking, not running it. 15 minute miles are doable, I think. Gonna think about this. Strikes me as a really good goal for myself. I kinda want something to shake things up. Just started t tapp and am a veteran walker and biker.

I'll let you know.

Sounds good Krista. Do you recommend any sites for training schedules?

kmik
12-13-2005, 09:39 PM
(!!!doing a little happy dance!!!) Yes, there are training schedules on coolrunning.com which we should all join. There are others out there too, and in the next few days I'll research a little more and see what I can recommend to the group.

So in the meantime, please join our yahoo group. :D :D :D

Running a marathon has always been a dream of mine! Iwas planning on running a half marathon in my home city in May and I am starting the formal training the beginning of February...so I would really like to try to join you guys for the Chicago Marathon. Do you have to qualify for Chicago? Anyways I'm also trying very hard to maintain my commitment to the raw lifestyle (although I've been slipping up a lot lately). I am also planning to do the New Year's 90 day challenge so I think this long term goal would be a wonderful addition! So to make a long story short (too late)...I'm in! I guess I'll sign up on the yahoo site.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Karen :)

Oh hey, I'm glad I found this thread.

I'm in Jersey, so not sure I'll be able to make the Chicago marathon, but I really want to start training for the New York Marathon in November, which is about the same distance, I think.

So I'm going to join in with you guys.

Also, I've been off Raw for a while now, and this'll be good inspiration to be me back into my health.

I'm gonna join up at coolrunnings, so i'll see u guys there.

Hi Karen! No, you don't have to quailify for Chicago :) Glad you joined the yahoo group, see you there!

KK, Yes, all marathons are 26.2 miles. You'll miss out all the raw-running partners at the race though :( But you're welcome to join us on yahoo! (CoolRunning is just a good place to log and get training advice.)

Boysenberry, how great! You're off to a great start, and I'll love getting to meet my other "pea" ;) Don't forget to come to the yahoo group as well!

Will everyone be training together? If so, where?

kmik
12-16-2005, 07:52 AM
Hi Bethany!

Most of us are from different areas. Although I will shortly be attempting to recruit more people from the Chicago area... I'm thinking about possibly having a weekly run together for anyone interested... perhaps like in Busse Woods or something.

Do you care to join our group?

kmik
12-16-2005, 07:55 AM
To anyone on the fence about doing this... rumor has it that a certain much loved author and highly respected raw-fooder will be present, and possibly even participating, but for sure doing a seminar in connection with this event. :D

I was planning on training for the San Diego Rock and Roll marathon....Chicago, eh? That would give me extra time for training! I am a novice, but have participated in 2 3Day walks the last couple of years. I wanted to step it up a notch and participate in a marathon. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun! Are there many people outside of Chicago participating? Thanks! Christine

Hello -- Please note that I am from Massachusetts. It should be fun to run with raw foodists from Chicago and elsewhere. Doing the marathon is actually a dream that I have been chasing for a long time. Thanks to my raw lifestyle, I feel, despite my age (50), very rejuvenated and should be able to fulfill my dream in running a marathon next year. Right now, I just need the support of everyone in this thread as I work up my courage to do it. In any rate, it appears so far that there are three of us from out of state -- me (Massachusetts), Christine (California) and Tim (Missouri). Anyone else? Wayne

Great timing Krista, couldnt have planned this while I'm still in CA so i could have run in the sun and warmth?!?!?!!? LOL!
I'm moving to Maine in Feb. so I guess I'm training in the snow!

I'm out of country! I'll be the Canadian representative for the run!

Don't worry Alissa, we'll both be training in the snow...it's not so bad really, they say it actually helps with your time because it's a bit harder with the varied terrain!

Tomorrow's my big start on my training schedule. I'm also running the half marathon in Ottawa, Ontario on May 28th, www.ncm.ca - there won't be snow by then!! So hopefully I'll be prepared for Chicago in October. Is anyone else running a half first to prepare for the full?

Chicago will be my first marathon! What about everyone else?

See you on Yahoo!

Karen :)

I am so blissfully happy that Alissa is doing this with us! Great news!! I am so happy our fearless leader will be with the rawrun group.

Kmik is the total inspiration for all of this. Her wisdom and vision were the spark for this great adventure. Thank you kmik!! I am happy to say that I am a proud member of the rawrun group.

I think EVERYONE would love to join ALISSA and the rawrun group. Start planning now....join the fun and commit today to do the Chicago Marathon on October 22. You will happy too!

Alissa's moving to Maine? to MY coast? ( screams!!!!) I can attend the certifications now!!! ( almost cries!) I wanted to go about the same time RawandNatural goes - so we could do it together.

My 13 year old daughter told me the other day that she thought I should run the marathon in Chicago.

I don't know where the money would come from, though. One going into jaw alignment, one kid going to Guatemala, Canada..and then, maybe Kenya, all 4 of us going to Chicago for dh's convention - and a MARATHON?? ( which means.. a plane ticket, entry fees, food, lodging.. )... ( mind reeling )

Lemme think on it some more.. okay?

Get larger -- your dreams, that is, and the universe will expand to encompass them.

Remember, if you build it, they will come ... ?

You can create abundance for yourself, young lady!!!

You create your own reality!!!

I just wanted to bring this thread up again... Sunday would be a great day to make a resolution to run a RAW marathon... October in Chicago... you get to run with our very own Alissa Cohen!!! You don't have to be an experienced runner to do it. There's time for even the previously exercise-resistant to train if you start now :)

Raw since August, 05 and running my first raw marathon this week end in Disney! (It's my 8th marathon and 9th 1/2 but first "raw")I also am thinking of either Chicago/NYC for next year....HMMMMM...I'll have to think about it...I do the Ottawa race EVERY YEAR, not sure who mentioned it but would love to talk more...

My reasons for running are different, but maybe I can inspire :D some of you. I am a member of the Neurofibromatosis (NF) marathon team for The Children's Tumor Foundation. Long story short my youngest son Joshua (of 5 kids) has NF and I joined the team in '99 to raise $ for research....been running ever since!!! Somewhere on this forum I posted a thread with "Joshua's story"... (of course I can't find it at the moment but think you can search neurofibromatosis if you're interested???)....
www.ctf.org can also provide you with info. about NF and even the marathon team! I realize you want to make a statement about raw food in Chicago so I understand if being on CTF team could take away from that in Chicago....but we do races in many places!!! added bonus...Although there is a fundraising requirement the foundation does provide you with a hotel room and airfare to and from the events....so if money is tight?...Fundraising is not as difficult as it seems...a good letter campaign and possibly a fundraiser of sorts (I've done them all trust me!!) usually gets the job done! I am trying to transition my family (esp. Joshua) to all raw so maybe by then he will be a little ambassador for all of us!!! Anyway, think about it...if not Chicago, NYC? Dublin? Alaska? SanDiego? Scotsdale? VA Beach??? eyc....
Happy Trails!

Hi Diantha!

That's wonderful that you run for a worthy, and quite personal cause! We would love to have you in Chicago. It's going to be an incredible experience!

And I'll share a super-confidential secret... there may be a Raw Food Non-Profit organization set up in the very near future, for us to raise funds for... not sure if the rooms could be covered yet, and fancy stuff like that. I've got my top people working on it ;)

Is there already a team started at the marathon registration? I wasn't sure if I am to register and then choose a team...or if there is already one started? Has anyone registered yet? I guess that's the real question...:)

kmik
01-02-2006, 10:01 PM

NFrawRUNNER

I may be wrong, but usually you can contact the director and get specifics right through their website???? There may be a minimum # requirement, etc... If you aren't recognized as a team per se you can all register individually, still wear "team shirts" and organize meeting places, etc...Since it is a first time experience for most of you that may be the best route? Unless you can find/make a connection in Chicago....(OK I STILL HAVE TO PROMOTE MY NF TEAM HERE>>>)...If anyone is "in the area" and wants to do a run and call it a training "race" I too am a race director for a local 10K in my area the first Saturday in August!!! Granted, it's not a marathon (10K=6.2 miles) but it's fun and for a great cause (NF of course!)...(my website is hideously outdated because I don't know how to change it and someone else did it for me but here it is www.pillarpointnfraces.com )....and I'll have PLENTY OF FRUIT!!!

If you have not heard from me through the RunRaw Yahoo group, or an individual email, it is urgent that you contact me immediately if you are planning on going to Chicago in October. I've just been told that room deposits must be in by tomorrow, Friday, January 27.

Please email me immediately at Krista@LiveonRaw.com so I can give you the information you need to secure your room.

If you are viewing this message after that date and you wish to participate and need accomodations, email me anyway, and I'll see what I can do.

I just found out this morning that this marathon / reunion is cancelled. However, it is going to be rescheduled elsewhere for the past teachers. I am hoping to be able to go to the new locationand meet all of the teachers that I haven't met yet. However, I am sad that I probably won't get to meet up with a few of you who I know are doing the marathon. Maybe we can plan another type of reunion in the spring or sometime when it's convenient for everyone!

The marathon is still going ahead! There's a handful of us, a couple teachers, a few other regular raw folks, that are still running in Chicago. But I've got a bit of an issue with extra hotel rooms now, that I've confirmed with personal funds that were being held for reunion folks... so if anyone knows ANYONE... raw or not, that's running the Chicago Marathon and needs a room... PLEASE have them contact me at Krista@LiveonRaw.com

We've got a hotel right across the street from the start/finish line at Grant Park. They gave us a discounted rate, and at this point there's no other hotels near as close with availability.

Hi Krista,

Yeah, I am so bummed that we are not going to be meeting up in Chicago. I too reserved a room and they are not willing to give me my full refund. Damn! Sorry about your situation. Will they refund you any of your $$$. I hope so! I am still planning on getting to Chicago sometime before the end of this year so maybe we will be able to have a meetup at Karyns or something like that!
