:) Hi,
Could someone please tell me, what can I use an a substitute for garam masala in my dish?
I have never seen this product in my health food store and the recipe calls for it so is there something that you use or have used instead for it.
Thanks for your help.

I don't have any substitutions for you - wish I did!

At the hfs, do they have those LARGE Frontier jars where you have to spoon/measure out how much you're purchasing? That's where I found mine. It took me a while, but there it was.

Garam Masala is an Indian spice.

:p I didn't know it was an Indian Spice, well now I know. Will try your idea. Thanks so much.

I use it as an ingreedent when I make my own curry powder. I have never tasted it on its own but I just put a little on my tongue and I reckon that the nearest taste to it is nutmeg.

garam masala is just a spice blend, it is not a specific spice. So you don't have to substitute, just mix up your own from its more readily obtainable ingredients.

I have made it before. A lot of Indian spice mixes include toasting the spice in a pan to bring out the flavor. they often do this especially with cumin.

here's one link to a recipe (just skip the roasting ;) ) or you can look around for different recipes.

:) Thanks to all of you for your help.
My husband told me last night that he noticed that I was sticking with my raw lifestyle change and that made me feel so good. But the truth is that with all the help and support that you all give is what is what is helping me to go all the way. It is becoming easier to eat this way and when I don't understand something I just ask and you all help with the answer.
Thanks so much.
Big Hugs to All!!!!
