Hi everyone,
I'm new to the group. Am trying to eat only raw food but have had a hard time figuring out what is raw or not. I live in France, so its not as easy to find raw resources as it is in the U.S. Is chacuterie raw? I went to an Italian restaurant for lunch and ordered this assuming it was raw but now I have my doubts. Answer? :)

Hi and welcome to our group!
No, it isn't raw...but also please keep in mind that this particular message board is geared towards a raw vegan lifestyle (fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains that we also use in conjunction with natural condiments to create recipes) so we do not advocate nor discuss the consumption of meat (raw or otherwise)...but there are some raw message boards that do get into eating raw meat and dairy.
Thanks!

Hi Vanina,
I had never heard of Charcuterie so I did a search on it and found:
charcuterie:
1. Sausages, ham, pâtés, and other cooked or processed meat foods. 2. A delicatessen specializing in such foods.
French, from chaircuicterie : chair, meat (from Latin car , flesh; see carnage) + cuict, cuit, cooked (from Latin coctus, past participle of coquere; see cook).

So I would say it is not Raw and on this board we don't support eating even raw meat. But from what it says above, the meat is cooked. You can always ask the chef.

Hey Rawkinlocs,
Guess we were posting at the same time :D
Vanina,
Just also wanted to welcome you here. Please check out the board here and Alissa's home webpage (you can get to it by the upper left hand corner). I hope this board is what you are looking for. You will find some great raw recipes here and lots of support and ideas from other raw foodists, or those in transtion to raw foods, here.
We also cover other things pertaining to exercise, sunlight, sleep/rest, relaxation and even other subjects like feeding our pets raw, dealing with unsupportive family/friend members.
So enjoy your journey here, you'll reap a lot of great info!!!

I've never heard of that either - it is suprising that you thought a meat dish was raw? I'm confused.
What is your idea of raw food?
With all the markets in France, there should be an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available to you.
You should probably abstain from restaraunteering until you have it down, though. :)

just to correct the misinformation, but not to advocate eating it or not eating it, prosciutto is actually fully raw, it is cured mainly using salt and hung in a cool area, no heat applied. It's a fact. Some other charcuteries are raw too, but some are smoked, etc.
There are other raw fooders who are not vegan, for instance Carole Alt's book discusses eating raw milk cheeses and raw eggs, ceviche from fish, tartare, etc.
As for vegan stuff, in France you're lucky for good red wine which is raw, good olives, and olive oil, hazelnuts, and just good produce in general.
