Okay I tried this recipe last night and they were gross. They don't taste anything like french fries and they didn't taste good period. Has anyone had any success with these? Please let me know if I did something wrong.

Not knowing what you did or didn't do, it's hard to tell.
If you are talking about Alissa's recipe, I didn't feel they'd get past anyone as being fried as some cookies might get past folk as being cooked or my fudge gets raves even from the SAD people, yet, didn't think they were "gross". Personally, I love jicama just as is or w/ a tad of lemon juice and sea salt. Maybe try something more to your liking?

Thank you very much. You are right. They just aren't what I really like. I have never had Jicama before. I am new to this so what does SAD mean? I am assuming that it stands for something. I haven't made much yet from her book. Just pesto and the date tort. Could you please tell me how you make your fudge. I am very curious. Thank you so much for your help.

Sarena,
LOL! I haven't tried this recipe ever, but one thing you will learn to do overtime and that's to really read the descriptions of various recipes. Now, I've seen the jicama "fries" recipes in many places and there was always one thing the recipes had in common...they all said that they LOOK (key word here) just like fast food fries...but no one ever said they TASTE like 'em! :D
So, that, for me, was a direct indicator that it would definitely have the illusion of french fries, but not one person ever said they taste like french fries. Like Revvell, some people just like jicama and therefore actually liked or even loved the recipe. But when in your mind you have the memory of what french fries taste like and then you make these and they taste nothing like them, you get that disappointment.
Some things you try will taste exactly like or darned close to the cooked version...others will be a far stretch!

BTW, SAD means standard american diet.
A swedish study found some fast food chain french fries to have 500 times the acrylamide levels recommended by the WHO. (world health organization).
So it would be a good thing to forget about the taste of french fries anyway.

If you look through this thread, you'll find the fudge. Too lazy to copy/paste.

The timing of this post is perfect. I just made Allison's jicama fries and let them sit over night thinking that they do really look like fries, and the marinade sounded good, so just maybe they actually will satisfy a fry craving? I drained and tasted some this afternoon and in NO WAY do they taste like french fries. Not at all.
I think it's best just to take food as it is, for what it is. I developed this mentality when I went vegan and was faced with all these "mock" meats and dairies that in no way tasted like their real counterparts. I figured if I decided not to eat meat & dairy, why pretend that I am? Now I look at raw foods the same way. It's a decision to not eat cooked, so why do I need to pretend that I am? So, I again tasted the jicama fries - this time w/out the looming idea of Mcdonald's fries - and they taste pretty good, as far as jicama fries go! :D

I like jicama plain or I"ll cut it with a crinkle cutter to use as a dipping apparatus. It's really good dipped in guacamole. The kids love jicama because it is juicy, crunchy, sweet and mild.

I agree and use this mindset when making new recipes; to enjoy the taste for what IT is and not try to compare it to the SAD version.
I've never made these but do love jicama in my salads.....
Also the mock mashed potatoes do not taste like real mashed potatoes; but if you get out of that mindset and enjoy califlower than
you might enjoy that recipe. If you do not like califlower stay away...

How do you cut your jicama? The first time I was going to attempt making these, I could barely get my knife through any of the jicama...I ended up giving up. I did just recently buy a mandolin...maybe this will work better

Thank you all so much. HAPPY KAUAI I agree with everything you said. If I am getting rid of that stuff in my life why pretend. It is unhealthy anyway. SHARON IN COLORADO Thank you so much. I have never eaten Jicama before so this was the first time I tried it. I have never had it anyother way but I love guacamole and that is a great idea.

Hello and greetings all, Samuel Wilson here. I would like to give my 2 cents if that is ok.
First of all, the name "mock french fries" is misleading. These things only look like fries. Beyond the looks, they are no more french fries than there is a war between maggots and men.
I suggest eating them fresh as "jicama sticks" and I have been brainstorming for a special dipping sauce for them and I will share it with you the moment it is available.
