View Full Version : hubby drinks green smoothies... it's a miracle!
My DH is about as SAD as you can get. He frequents fast food places, always has a case of Coke in his car, drinks beer almost every night, and won't eat any fruits or veggies other than french fries, and, thank God, his occaisional batch of salsa made with fresh ingredients. He's always insisted he's healthy because he's never been fat.
So yesterday he starts working out, and he bought a whole bunch of food to "gain muscle," chicken breasts, bratwurst (never read that in any workout book!), white rice, potatoes, and skim milk. Nothing organic. :(
So I'm sittin' there drinking my green smoothie and he asks for some. Of course I jump at the chance and fill up his glass. He asks "how much protein is in this?" I rattle off some numbers from the hemp protein powder can and about greens and aminos. So he says, "I'm going to need a couple of these every day!"   I about fell over!!!!
So I got up early this morning and made him one for his ride to work. I'll have one waiting when he gets home. Miracles happen!!! For any of you with SAD loved ones, there's hope! Just keep setting the example, don't harp on it or lecture, and eventually they may see something in it for them :D
(Granted I'm not thinking he's going raw any time soon... but at least he's getting some living things in him!)

That is so amazing! Victoria Boutenko said that among her co-workers, even those who did not otherwise change their diet, but drank a couple of green smoothies at the office, not even daily, reported they overall felt better.
Wish all the best for you and your husband.

Awesome, Kmik! On Thanksgiving I was at my parents house and made a big green smoothie and I got both my SAD parents to try it! My father who is a biggg meat eater said it wasn't too bad! The power of the green smoothie is great! :D
Vandy and Purtyflowrr, just make a fruit smoothie and add about a handful or two of greens! I usually add dandelion or spinach. I've added rainbow chard, but the chard didn't blend nicely and made the smoothie reeeallly chunky which wasn't as appetizing to me.

Try 2 or 3 different greens (mild ones to start with) say, parsley, celery and or romaine lettuce....and then add as many purple grapes to the blender that it takes to sweeten to taste ( I use about 1/2 a bag for my family  ). Then I add water to get the consistency I like...so it's not to thick.
When I drink this it's like I'm drinking from the cup of life itself.
For myself I now use greens that are more bitter, kale and spanich with parsley. Or bok choy, celery and dandelion. It really doesn't matter which greens you use so long as you do rotate them once in a while. And the sugar from the grapes just drowns the bitterness of the greens. When I make these now I usually pour my portion out first then add more grapes for the kids. I actually love the green flavor to come through.
You could try sweetening with other fruits...apples or pears.

I would love to know how you drink the hemp protein powder. I can't get it past my nose. I ordered it from Allissa'a site and now can not return it sooooooo anything to kill the smell or cure the taste let me know. Some people suggested I use OJ for green's powder that I ordered from another site. Just can't get it down. I have no problem with fresh spinach/carrott juice just this grass smell in hemp and greens powder gets me.
Perhaps try with just a little bit in your smoothie. I only put one heaping scoop in an entire Vitamix full of smoothie. But maybe if you start with only 1/4 of a scoop, you won't notice it and can work your way up.

You both can find recipes and info here http://www.rawfamily.com/articles.html
But essentially I just do my regular fruit smoothie recipe and add a bunch of greens. I like using Kale, Chard, Romaine, Spinach, mild greens. My Vitamix chops them all up no problem.

Okay, I'll try to use a scoop in my fruit smoothie. I use 1 a day because I have to drink my lunch at work. I keep my smoothie cool not cold on my desk. I checked out the website also and maybe will try some of those receipes, although they don't call for hemp protein or powder greens. We just keep trying.
I add half of one peeled organic meyer lemon to my green smoothies to smooth out the edgy taste of the Kale; the lemon juice also brightens the taste. I take the yellow rind off the lemon but leave the white pith.

kmik...your hubby sounds EXACTLY like mine!! Although, about 3 years ago I did get him off cow's milk by leaving articles laying around in the bathroom. (thats the only place he reads..lol) One day, he just said 'you don't need to buy milk anymore'. Yeah, I about fell over too!!! He does like my smoothies and about twice/week...thats the family dinner...FOR EVERYONE!! I think he'll leave the dark side altogether someday. I happen to believe in miracles :)
KMIK so glad he tried it and liked ! Maybe this will lead him to try other things soon ?
I made a smoothie instead of green juice for my DH this morning ! But has been going along with this from day 1 so I am lucky, but
I surprised him with my favorite Victoria B classic green smooothie of just dino kale and banana. He drank it ! not sure if he liked it but it was all gone .
You have convinced me, a Vitamix is going to be holiday gift request :D ! I'm tired of chopping my greens by hands before putting them in my blender !
