:) Hello everyone!
I am convicted that raw is best and so I am starting out this new adventure in much excitement. I have so many questions, is anyone here rom the Dallas Texas area??? I am looking for some general info on how to get started and some good snack ideas. I have Alissa's book and DVD and have been a mad-scientist in the kitchen un-cooking lots of things. What are the "green smoothies" everyone talks about??? I have 3 small children and they hate everything but fruit and the nut butters. Also, does anyone have a good source for buying nuts that is not astronomically expensive??? Thanks for reading and I will appreciate any and all advice!!!
God Bless you,
happyyummymom :) :p

Hello Happyyummymom,

Welcome to a wonderful board where everyone here is helpful and advocates a raw vegan lifestyle. I don't have much advice on children, or the area that you live in.

Now about those green smoothies. I'm sure someone will post a link for you but here's the general idea.

Put whatever fruit you like in the blender, get it going, then add any greens that you might enjoy. I started with romaine lettuce because it has such a mild flavor. My first smoothies were banana/strawberry/romaine. Blueberries also work well. Those fruits tend to mask the green color of the smoothies. I still stick to the milder green smoothies, using romaine or mixed spring greens. Some people rave about smoothies with kale. Do a search for green smoothies. Use the banana up in the top right hand corner to search. You'll find lots of favorites and and pick and choose. People do talk about their kids loving the smoothies.

Welcome, and keep asking questions as you find your way!

Welcome!

As Calee promised, here's a green smoothie link :) http://www.rawfamily.com/articles.html

Victoria also wrote a book called "Green for Life" that gets more in to detail about them.

My five year old and 14 year old daughters both enjoy my green smoothies. I use Kale, Chard, Spinach, or various dark lettuces. The important thing is to vary your greens. Don't always use the same ones.

The only snack I can recommend that isn't in Alissa's book is mix some cinnamon in Almond butter, then dip apple slices in it. I can live off that stuff!

We're glad to have you here!

Hi ya neighbor!
I'm from the Dallas metro as well. the north suburbs.
I am a mother of 2 boys ages 5 and 8 (almost 9).
They are not all raw, but eat a lot of raw foods.
The key for me is make it "fun" for them. I call green smoothies or
green juices "HULK" drinks and play it up. I make up names like "broccolli trees" "date cakes" "apricot cookies for dried apricots" and so on to make it fun for them
and more appealing. I cut up platters of fruits and veggies and
talk about "rainbow" colors of the produce. I even tell them (in simple terms) what vitamins or minerals certain things have.
They love nut butters, fruits, some veggies, fruit smoothies (made either
with nut mylks or young coconut water as a base), green smoothies,
fresh juices, raw DESSERTS, raw ice-creams, etc. I think start with things
you know they like and slowly add to that base without being
to pushy. Green smoothies are an awesome way to get some needed greens
in them. As long as they taste fruity they (at least mine) love them.
From Alissa's book my kids love the blueberry pie and the banana crepes with strawberry sauce. both are on the dvd as well.
There's a banana ice cream recipe that is divine on the boards here. Use the banana key at the top of the page to do a search. I can't think of the name of the recipe but I will try to locate it for you.
Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have for local sources too.

As far as a local source for nuts Costco has great prices but they are
not organic. I use to buy most of my nuts organic if possible (whole foods),
but I am having to watch my budget a bit more lately cause our groceries
and so expensive, so I have
caved and bought nuts at Costco.

Yeah.....nuts can be expensive. I have a friend with two walnut trees and in the past they let me have all I want but that also intails gathering them, and cracking them which is a HUGE amount of effort. I do love having the fresh walnuts. I also have tried to get some recipes that use sunflower seeds, burgers etc. Good Luck and welcome.
