Hi all,

We are going to Maui for winter vacation next month and starting to get excited. I looked up and there are several Raw places on Maui !
Has anyone ever visited and found any of them ?

Also, does anyone know anything about Renee Loux Underkoffler ? Its says she is a Maui based Raw chef ?

Thanks !

I Have Renee's book, Living Cuisine, and so far, besides Alissa's book, it is one of the best in my raw collection. I would definitely go to her restaurant if I were in Maui.

Renee was part owner of the Raw Experience restaurant in Pa'ia, Maui. Unfortunately, it's long gone. I ate there a couple of times, and it was excellent as you might expect. I don't know Renee personally, but I think she's still listed in the Maui phone directory....I could be wrong.

Mana Foods, a natural foods store also located in Pa'ia, has some raw items in their deli. Down To Earth may also have some raw stuff; not sure about that. There's also Joy's Place, in Kihei on the south shore, that does some raw foods. It's good to do a google search, because restaurants change quickly here.

There's a raw event coming up at The Studio in Ha'iku, Maui (my hometown), on December 10 I believe. Here's a link; http://www.raw-passion.com/maui.html

We were in Maui in August and didn't find much. There are a lot of places to eat where you can get a raw meal, but not necessarily at a raw restaurant. We found a decent (not great) natural foods grocery, but mostly for vegetarians.

Hi Cadreamer where was that, I found some markets that say they have Raw foods. Bet it's the same one.

Thanks

Yes, it's pretty much as CADreamer said; there isn't much for the pure raw foodist here at the moment (I'm not one, so I do okay here). The Raw Experience lasted a couple of years, then folded. I think you might want to give Renee a call anyway, when you get here.

Kapalua, as nice as it is, is probably not as veg-friendly as other parts of the island, being more geared to the tourist. I'm not sure what the current state of veg dining is on the west side. It seems most of that kind of activity is in central Maui, and up here on the north-east side. The stores I mentioned may be able to give you more info, as there are often one time dietary "events" and lectures here.

Hey....just noticed I'm a "seedling"!

When I was in Pa'ia, I lived off of the salad bar and raw prepared foods at Mana. Not to mention all the ripe fruits and coconuts everywhere! I also hit the juice bar on the main drag in Pa'ia every morning...yummmm. There's a Thai restaurant up the road from Mana, where we got spring rolls and salads too (not 100% raw though.)

That would be "Fresh Mint", and it's actually run by a Vietnamese lady, if I'm not mistaken. However, it's recently moved to Kahului.

Mana foods has a great deli, with some raw items. However, they are not 100% veg; they do have some meat items in the deli and for sale, so be forewarned if that offends you. Down To Earth has no meat products; they may have some dairy, can't remember for sure.

Yes, Fresh Mint, that's it! It wasn't that great anyway, but at least a place for a sitdown meal.

When I was in Maui, it was for a yoga retreat and we were soooo fortunate to have Renee Underkoeffler as the chef for two group dinners. Her food was AMAZING!!!

I liked Ha'iku too - cool town. I think there was a veg restaurant in town, but it was lot of soy faux vegetarian. That raw event with Doug Graham looks like fun!

The one in Ha'iku is called "Veg Out". Pretty basic, but it's about a 5 minute walk from my house.

Thanks for the great info ! Do you have any contact info for Renee ?
It's lsounds like the hotel will be able to accomdate my " special dietary needs" I e-mailed them this morning, they do have a juicer and can preprae me whatever I need :D so that's encouraging !

Thanks again !

Ah, so that's her... I've seen her walking about my side of the island, and wondered who that lovely lady was. ;)
