View Full Version : Was your Thanksgiving 100% raw?
This was my first raw Thanksgiving. It went without a hitch. I had family here that wasn't interested in eating raw, so they brought their own turkey, stuffing, cranberries, potatoes, the works.
My brother and I made mock turkey loaf, noasted turkey, cranberry sauce, pesto stuffed mushrooms, salad, pumpkin pie, banana cream pie, date nute torte, oh, and my brother brought some heirloom tomatoes in different colors. I've never had those before, they were incredible! I think we had a few other things... can't remember now.
Anyway, I wasn't tempted at all by any of their food... actually not much of my own either. Before dinner was served, my brother had extra pumpkin filling, so I started eating that on apples...mmm, it was so good! Then I took the mushrooms out of the dehydrator. I think I ate most of them  When it was time for dinner, I was stuffed! I just picked at a few things.
This'll probably be my first Thanksgiving ever that I didn't gain weight ;)
Overall, I was really surprised how easy it was for me to stay raw.
How did everyone else do who had intended to stay raw on Thanksgiving?

I'll most likely gain weight, but I didn't eat any cooked food! It was just WAY too much raw! LOL. I ate tons of dehydrated chili rellenos and kept myself full so as to not be temped. I looked real hard at the pumpkin pie and even took a long whiff of it when getting some for the kids, but didn't cave.

I made a 100% raw meal that turned out quite well. The noasted turkey and mock turkey loaf were given lukewarm reviews by my husband, but he loved everything else. We made the following (just a small amount of each):
Sliced veggie plate with salsa
Spicy nuts
Pesto stuffed mushrooms
To drink:
Egg nog
Beet "cabernet"
Main meal:
Noasted Turkey and Mock Turkey Loaf
Cranberry sauce
Pumpkin bread
Mashed potatoes
Dressing
Waldorf salad
Carrot/cabbage salad
Corn on the cob with "butter"
Dessert:
Apple pie w/ carmel sauce
Date Nut Torte
Sergei's Amazing Truffles
However, I felt my husband still missed his traditional turkey, gravy and stuffing. Then *I* felt bad that I had *ruined* his holiday and went into the bathroom and cried for a bit. When I came out he told me that he has had 57 Thanksgivings and that not having turkey today was no big deal and he really enjoyed the meal. We made it together for the most part and he enjoyed the desserts as well. My stomach is churning a bit from all the food combining, but all in all, our holiday was a big success. :D
No; I caved. But i learnt my lesson and christmas will be different!!

No...my dinner was delicious and raw, so was my dessert (I'll post pics later), but I made cooked dessert for the family and I caved in at that. I did try to make the cooked pie as "healthy" as I could...using ingredients from the co-op as opposed to the standard stuff at the regular grocers...but it was cooked nonetheless. Congrats to you who stuck to it!!

Truth is I did horrible. I confess it was a total binge but hear I am back on this board. I am more determined then ever to make it raw and I hope buying Alissas book will help guide me. I hope I'm not the only one that fell flat on my face.

Hi,
Yes it was and my husband loved it. I tried to make the turkey that you could shape into a drumstick but it didn't stick together too well and I thinly sliced up mushroom w/sweet onions and celery, thinly sliced carrots with cilantro and cranberry sause which my dear husband didn't eat but I loved it.
Also made a raw sweet potato pie which we haven't ate yet.
It's my first raw Thanksgiving so I guess it went okay but next year it will be better.
Glad to know your went well.

Mine was raw. I've been having a hard time with it lately, feeling tempted, and I just knew that a big meal would set me up for another round of cravings and "last suppers," so I made a normal meal for my family and I stayed raw. Nothing fancy, the only thing I really made for a raw holiday treat was Alissa's pecan pie. I was craving pecan pie, so I made a raw one. When everyone else had turkey and stuffing, I had a blended soup (avocado and tomato) and the salad I made for all of us. The soup was thick and creamy, and I didn't feel deprived one bit.

My husband just read my e-mail and says he more than loved it. He says he did not miss a cooked Thanksgiving dinner. He says I have developed a nack for this raw food preparing and if there is anyone out there that is debating on whether to stay raw or go back to cooked foods {don't}.
If you continue you will get as good at preparing raw food as you were when you prepared cooked food.
He says, his wife is living proof of that. If it's in your heart to be healthy and stay raw you must stay encouraged and you will develop the skill and knowledge needed to stay the course.
Let's continue to be strength for one another and to share information because it really does help, it's helped me.

Hallelujah, we had a great meal. My Mom and I ate all raw and the others (8) enjoyed their meals as well. It was quite a good day for the fiddler's family indeed. I made Alissa's date nut torte for the first time and it was a hit with me and my Mom. I was disappointed because noone else in my family wanted to even try the torte. They just stuck with the pecan and pumpkin pies... Their loss for not even trying it -- Mom and I loved it, especially with the rasberries and banana cream. We had raw appetizers (see pic), main salad (no pic) with sides of waldorf and cranberry relish. The desert speaks for itself below. Delicious.
Thanks for everyone's help.
P.S.: I saved all of RP's pictures to my hard disk to improve my presentation skills for the next time. RP ROCKS and is my hero!!!

Just in time for the festivities I caught the crud that has been going around. I felt good most of the day yesterday, spent the better part of 10 hours in the kitchen preparing food. Here's what I made (all raw);
pumpkin pie
green bean casserole
marinated asparagus
pumpkin soup
stuffing
cranberry relish
egg nog
Then toward evening the crud with a fever hit. Not only was I tired from that but the hours of preparing food, so that when it came time for dinner I could not deal with it. All those hours of making good for me food and I broke down and had pizza with my family. (Not gonna help the recovery process!!)
Well then today I woke with the same crud, slept or just hung out until time for food. I had a few deviled eggs and a dinner of all raw (yummy) followed by a few pieces of fudge(not raw-yuck..but I ate it anyway whats up with that?)
Now its time to eat a little, I am craving mash potaoes and gravy (the cooked kind) probably because not feeling good I want some comfort food. Think i will cut into the raw pumpkin though.
I think my intent of eatting raw was challenged by being sick. Just wanting comfort food. Why does comfort food have to mean crappy food? Maybe someday my body/mind will associate comfort food with healthy raw.
For now its looking to the future, where I see whole, healthy, raw food.
Congrats to those that made it 100%, and for those like me, its a process of learning and moving on to the next challenge. Tomarrow and the next day and on to Christmas!
peace and love-

Almost! I made a green smoothie while preparing some fruit salad(kiwi, strawberry and banana mmmm!) then made a big salad with romaine and rainbow chard(it's sooo pretty!) and broccoli bits and carrot slices and granny smith pieces. As my boyfriend and I were making a salad dressing, my (SAD)mother had something in the oven and I swear I getting soo hot standing next to it! I'm so glad I've decided to never prepare things in an oven! I started getting nauseous and everything!:( Anyway, the salad dressing was more of like a fruit dip, it was cashews, strawberries and tangerine juice. It was soo yummy when dipped by apple! Then dinner time came and my boyfriend had his own mashed potatoes made with vegan "butter"(everyone else had dairy in theirs) and some wheat rolls and those two combined are my very favorite SAD food and I had a little piece of roll with a few teeny bites of mashed potato. Then I munched a few bits of the french fried onions off of the green bean casserole. I didn't think I had eaten a lot of cooked food(which I really hadn't), but on the drive back to my place I started craving french fries, burritos, etc. I really wish I had stayed 100% raw...but that will have to wait until next time.

Well, in reply to how I did raw for this Thanksgiving....I would have to say I did not do 100% but I feel that I did pretty well. Every year all the holiday dinners are at my house and I do most of the cooking. I am the only one raw so far :p so everything is traditional. I was not tempted. My only problem is that I did not plan well for myself. I was raw for the whole day until about 6:30pm. I was tired and hungry. I ate a few bites of cooked food. I didn't care for the taste, I just wish I had planned better for myself. I did make raw desserts for myself and those were great. Thanks for sharing everone. You all are such wonderful encouragers. :D

Autumn, I went through the opposite - regret.
Our meal was wonderful. I ate all raw, but made raw and cooked food. Except I went through a lot of guilt after feeding this crap to people. Of course I made everything from scratch, etc. and it was enjoyed by all. I made a myriad of desserts, cooked and raw and everyone but I ate the cooked. Shortly after, my kids were acting all wacked out, I've never seen them this way. BIL said it was all the sugar. He also said he had a headache from the 'sugar' in the desserts, but he wouldn't have it any other way. Isn't that silly?
We started off with Samuel Wilson's orange cream drink that I modified and called "ambrosia", then had a strawberry soup with cashew cream, then a lovely salad, but when the cooked crap came, look out, all heck broke loose.
So I did feel a lot of guilt making this cooked food, as much as they liked it. My BIL has high triglycerides, and eats bad anyway, but I really feel like I contributed and kind of upset about the way my kids got sugared up. :(
I suppose if I had made an all raw feast I'd feel bad too, like they missed out, so sera, sera.

YES, we ate RAW for Thanksgiving, then went to friends house to visit, and stayed raw there too.
So, we are feeling light and free tonight.
I am snacking on kalamata olives, pineapple and some of the nuts and truffles we had left over from this afternoon, will be snacking on this for a week at least. LOL
Hope all had a marvelously wonderful time, no matter what you ate.

i was really excited to try new foods, now i just have to work on getting a refund from rawlifeline.

Miranda, I'm so sorry your Thanksgiving meal didn't arrive.
You must have been disappointed.
I didn't order from rawlifeline for Thanksgiving,

They did refund my money the 2nd time I ordered and had a mishap with shipping. Their food is awesome though, and the person I talked to really
nice; but shipping to Texas wasn't working out
for me, esp. in the summertime.
Hope your refund goes smoothly....

Yes, I was all raw! my brother in law is raw too (for 8 or 9 years) and this is the first thanksgiving he's had anything but a salad. I was so happy that I had someone to share my food w/. I made: cranberrry sauce, yam souffle, mashed potatoes w/ gravy (he loved it I hated it, I've got to find a cauliflowerless mashed potato), eggnog, veggies w. spicy cheese dip. We were supposed to have stuffing to but his wife goofed the recipe. Oh well, I was stuffed and my scale is unbelieveably high today!!

99 % raw for Thanksgiving here. I had a teeny bite of the turkey because everyone was raving over it. I didn't plan on eating more even if it did taste good to me...but it didn't! I loved the mock turkey loaf, but added extra cranberry sauce (raw) to it. I made that, a huge green salad (with pomegranates! :) ), Just Like Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake (which did not stay formed in a nice cake shape, probably because I used frozen cherries, but it still tasted wonderful!) and my mom made Carrot With a Kick salad too. She is mostly raw too, so she decided the only cooked food she would make would be turkey, dressing and gravy. I made two Chocolate Chunk Pecan pies (cooked) at my husband's request as they are his favorite. So, even the non raw folks at the dinner had to eat our raw sides, because we didn't offer much else. It was really yummy!! Now I have spent the whole morning explaining "raw food" to my inlaws who flew in yesterday just in time for our meal (and hadn't seen me since I was cooked and 65 pounds heavier). It still amazes me when I talk about raw food how people look at us like we are from another planet or something! It's so totally foreign to people and yet the crazy thing about it is that it is the MOST NATURAL way to eat. Anyways....rambling this morning...
Bless you bunches,

We were 100% raw. I made:
Mock Turkey Loaf
Mashed Potatoes w/Mushroom Gravy
Whipped Sweet Potatoes
Cranberry Relish
Pumpkin Pie
Nut Nog
Everything was good, but I don't think I'll make either of the potato dishes again ... I just don't like cauliflower. The pie was excellent! Probably the best one I've had. We had two guests and they were wild about everything. Can't say the same for my husband, but he didn't complain. He liked the nut nog and pie. I sort of liked the turkey loaf. I need to find some more recipes -- right now I'm using Alissa's book for all my recipes.
I'm a little discouraged because my husband will never go 100% raw with me. He keeps saying how much he misses cooked food and then I feel guilty. I'm not missing cooked foods at all and I was feeling better. I'm exhausted today, though.

Cheers to all who stayed raw on Thanksgiving. To those who caved, Alissa always says, "persistence not perfection." Love yourself...we love you!
I was maybe 98% raw. Indulged in one pimento-stuffed olive (didn't really enjoy it) and a couple spoonfuls of fresh cranberries sweetened with xylitol. I think the xylitol gave me a weird buzz for a while.
Other than that, I really enjoyed Alissa's pesto mushrooms (made with regular-sized crimini mushroom), caesar salad, and cornbread with avocado "butter". David and I also made Sergei Boutenko's Thai curry cucumber salad with cashews (one of our favorites). We also had "just like ceesecake" with agave-sweetened strawberries on top. Our non-raw friends couldn't get over the cheesecake...they wanted the recipe!
This was my first Thanksgiving without turkey, potatoes, dressing and pumpkin pie. I did not miss them. David ate small amounts of turkey and pie along with our raw food; he's feeling fine today. We'll see if cooked food cravings kick in...

I felt so good that I only had a few bites of cooked, and all the rest was fruits and veggies. Came home afterwards, made a raw pumpkin pie (using my brand new, one day old, Champ HP3 blender), and by the time I had taste tested it to perfection, I wasn't hungry and just stuck it in the fridge for today! Got up this morning and went right back on raw, having a wonderful green smoothie. I am amazed how smooth it is in my new blender, it's really powerful on those tough greens! I didn't find myself craving anything yesterday or today as long as I had fruit and veggies to munch on. I know one day and a few bites of cooked I'm ok, but any more than that, and I'll start seeing the consequences! I refuse to be anything but a good example to those who question my raw food journey, they need to see that it works. :) Happy Thanksgiving to all of my friends here!

I was totally raw on thanksgiving!!! I spent the day with friends because I am away from my family, and did most of the cooking! I made a few vegetarian cooked items and also a tomato avocado salad, a large green salad, and a fruit salad for dessert. I ate the raw stuff, and interestingly enough so did my cooked friends! The only food we didn't have leftovers from was the raw!!!! For dessert there were these two beautiful french cakes, but people barely tasted them and instead chose the fruit! It was a great day, and while I was tempted by the appetizing scents it was easy to resist.

I ate Raw, BUT, my husband wasn't too understanding. I had a HUGE salad with sprouted seeds sprinkled on it. I also had a raw bread made of carrot flax carob and seeds. My husband looked at my plate and said that it was not a Thanksgiving Plate and I was not honoring Thanksgiving eating in such a manner. So I put a little turkey and stuffing on a side plate, keep the peace...but did not eat it. He did not even notice.

 Good grief. Like where is it stated that you have to eat turkey and stuffing made out of bread in order to "honour" Thanksgiving? But you know, society has made most people believe this way that Thanksgiving is just not Thanksgiving without the traditional foods. I still have trouble with these feelings even though I know that raw food lifestyle is the best way to be.
That would have irritated me, but I think you handled it well. I hope for your sake that your husband becomes more understanding of your lifestyle.

Twinee I read somewhere that the original Thanksgiving didn't even have turkey. I think all the extra stuff is just passed down tradition.
It is like how I look at my Jewish friends and family who eat kosher and think there's something sacred about it. They don't mix meat and milk and heaven forbid you use a dairy fork for meat, then you have to go say a prayer and bury it. But the original clean Biblical laws said nothing about mixing the two. It's just a lot of tradition passed down.
Then you have folks eating ham on Christmas. Here they are celebrating the dedication of the birth of their savior, a Jewish man who probably wouldn't have touched it with a ten foot pole (I'm just guessing here as he observed the law).
It took me years to "unprogram" myself from all the tradition that I learned (I wouldn't call it brainwashing, maybe just habit-forming views I was taught). I still see so much of it around my own family. Nobody can explain it but they just have to do things a certain way!
We all do and believe in the strangest things, I think most of them because we were taught that is the way they need to be done. And there's no rhyme or reason to it!

Ah, managed to stay raw. I brought all my food to my sisters, and everyone else ate the normal TG food. They did all try my chocolate mouse cake with raspberry sauce (found on http://greenchefs.tv/jana_delights/chocolate-mousse-cake.html) and all enjoyed it. It did come out great.
Made some yummy mushroom patties that had started out as stuffing, but was so yummy I decided to dehydrate the mixture into patties for my turkey sub instead. cauli mash, herbed brocolli, and covered everything in mushroom gravy. Made a smashing salad for everyone as well. Found out my mom doesn't like fresh cilantro, so she didn't eat the salad. :(
I would also like to know if anyone else ordered or orders from rawlifeline. In the next year I plan on opening my own raw food delivery service for the NY area and have been watching them as a competitor. Any comments are welcome.

This reminds me of a story I heard as a kid... this woman was making a roast, and cut the ends off of it before sticking it in the oven. Her husband asked why she did that, and she said that's how her mom did it. So she asked her mom, and she said that's how her grandma did it... so she asked her grandma, and she said it was because she didn't have a big enough pan to fit it in! :p

Warning - cooked story:
When my husband makes milk gravy for his bisquits, he always uses the widest skillet. I kept telling him to use a saucepan, as it's smaller, easier stir & use & clean and takes up less room. He said that's the way his folks always did it, with the big skillet. Time and time again I told him the reason why they did it is because they used the fat from whatever pork product they'd been frying in that pan, and since he doesn't use animal grease he doesn't need to use the big skillet. Well, finally this weekend he made his gravy in a little sauce pan and he agreed that it was much easier.

Peace,
I maintained 100% raw during the holiday. It was my first thanksgiving being raw as well.
I made the mock turkey recipe and it was delicious. It tasted a lot better than i thought it would. But i ran into a problem afterwards. I started getting a headache, then my stomach began to ache, i felt a bit nautious, the whole thing. It was a horrible feeling.
My conclusion was that i may have eaten just a little too much (not incredibly overeating), and also the combination of the nuts along with the vegetables just gave my body some problems. I've never eaten anything with that kind of combination of nuts before, and i think that definitely contributed to something. I'll be better prepared next time.
But all in all, it was a wonderful time being back home, and wow. That mock turkey is no joke! I'll have more discipline next time for sure!
PEACE

I stayed 100%, but I was the only raw eater at a huge table of heavy meat eating Italians.
It's very easy to not want to eat anything at my mother in law's house, because she is one of those who tastes things, then puts the spoon she licked back in the dish to stir it. She licks her fingers when cutting the meat, licks them when tossing a salad with her hands, etc... eeek. Unfortunately, I almost had to starve, because before I could catch it she tasted the raw dish I brought, then stirred it with her gobbed on spoon. I just took myself a tiny little bit from the edge HOPING it wasn't gobbed on, and ate from a wonderful fruit platter. After dinner, everyone was in pain and moaning about their stomachs, looking for the Brioschi (Italian alka-seltzer), except me who felt great and had happy bounds of energy.
